How To Hard Wire In Your Radar Dectector

I have found a very easy way to hard wire a radar detector into my car. For most people, like myself, I don't care to have a long power wire coming from my radar detector to my lighter. I solved this by doing a hard wire (wire to wire, not plug to plug) install on my new Cobra laser 360°.

Parts

1 Radar detector

2 Quick splice connector or T-connectors or Scotch locks. (i used quick splice connectors)

1 pair of plyers

1 razor knife

Install

Position your radar detector where you would like it to stay, and then touck all the wires away into the trim leading down the side of the dash. Carefully, cut the plug in power adapter off the power cord, noting which was the power and which was the ground. Hint: the power is the wire that connects the center of the plug (usually stripped), where the ground is the outer metal brackets that help hold the plug into the lighter. Next, take off the lower part of the dash (just the lower moulding not the metal brackets) and feed the wires through the dash to the other side just under the lighter socket. Pull the lighting mechanism out of the socket. Now put your thumb inside the lighter socket and press hard against it and pull out slow. It will take a little effort. Next, disconnect the power/ ground plug from the lighter socket that is usually hidden inside the dash, noting which is the power and which is ground. Hint: again, the power in the line that is connected to the center of the socket and the gound runs along the outer rim. To check if you have the right power and ground, turn on your car and carefully slide an exposed wire into one plug end and the same with the other. If your radar detector powers up (with the correct wiring setup), then you are good to continue on. Next, take one connector and splice into the wire and make your connection, do the same with the others. Test the connection by turning on your car to see if the radar detector powers up. Reconnect the plug socket and feed the wires back into the dash. Now, carefully pop the socket into place understanding there are tabs on the side that go through a groove to allow this to happen. Once you have the socket back into place, you may replace your cigarette lighter and enjoy.
