'91-'92 MR2 fog light mod

By Jeff Bihn

The following will direct you in a step by step manner to re-wire your fog lights to the parking lights or to run them independently.

Tools:

10mm wrench or socket, 12mm wrench or socket, small flat head screw driver, wire strippers or razor knife, pliers or crimping tool, and soldering iron (optional)

Materials:

1 "T" or scotchlock wire connectors

electrical tape

2 foot piece of 22 gauge wire.

The steps:

1- Open the front hood and go to the passenger's side of the car, locate the black fuse box.

2- Take the 10mm wrench and remove the hex head screw from the front of the bracket that is on the inside of the car's trunk.

3- Take the small screw driver and press the locking tab on both brackets to remove the box from the brackets.

4- Take the 12mm wrench and just loosen the bolt that secures the inside bracket at the point closest to the firewall.

5- Now slowly slide the inside bracket out and swing it up toward the hood and secure it up to something with some string or leftover wire. (this will allow you to turn the box over, and securing it will keep it from scratching something and out of your way)

6- Now, roll the fuse box in toward the center of the car and flip it over.

7- Take off the black cover that is over all the wires. To do this locate where the cover snaps into the fuse box and carefully with the small screw driver push the small tab away from the big tab and then push down and out.

8- Repeat the last step two more times.

9- The fourth tab in under a fuse, so pull the fuse out and do the same procedure to remove the tab.

10- Find the red with yellow striped wire located under the outer most blue fuse/ switch. Cut it in half about 4 inches down from the fuse box and then strip about 1/2 inch off. (this will allow enough wire to allow for free movement when rewiring)

11- The rest of the red with yellow striped wire that is not connected to the fuse box can be rolled up and taped away, in case of later changes. (you want to only work with the wire 1/2 that is still connected to the fuse box)

The following instructions are to be followed only if you would like your fog lights to be wired and ran independently. They will work on the interior switch only and will be dependent on that switch only.

--If not, skip down to step 19

12- Next to the red with yellow striped wire on the same fuse/ switch is a red with black striped wire. Score this wire around, but do not cut.

13- Now take your "T" connector and connect it to the red with black striped wire at the scored area.

14- If you like, you can take your soldering iron and put a small bead of solder on the junction, so not to allow it to slip and to make a solid connection.

15- Now place the male end of the connector on the stripped end of the red with yellow striped wire and crimp down tight. You may also with to solder this point too.

16- Slide the male end in to the connector and test.

17- If successful, retest a few more times to make sure it is working correctly.

18- After testing again and again, it still is working properly, you can re-tape everything back up and remount the fuse box and the bracket.

The following instructions are to be followed only if you would like your fog lights to be wired to run with your parking lights. They will work on the interior switch only, but will be dependent on the parking lights.

19- Cut away all the tape from the box to the main loom that runs from the firewall to the front.

20- Within the main loom there 3 solid green wires. Locate the two green wires that are coupled into one. It should be right about where the wires branch off to go to the fuse box. (make sure that you are working with those wires, the other single solid green wire is the passengers side pop-up motor)

21- There might already be electrical tape on this coupling, so clear it away to expose the coupling.

22- Take a "T" connector and place it on the single wire after the coupling.

23- If you like, you can take your soldering iron and put a small bead of solder on the junction, so not to allow it to slip and to make a solid connection.

24- Now place the male end of the connector on the stripped end of the red with yellow striped wire and crimp down tight. You may also with to solder this point too.

25- Slide the male end in to the connector and test.

26- If successful, retest a few more times to make sure it is working correctly.

27- After testing again and again, it still is working properly, you can re-tape everything back up and remount the fuse box and the bracket.
