MR2 Wins at Tokyo Auto Salon

"The 13th Tokyo Auto Salon and Racing Car Show showed to the world the rising importance of aftermarket manufacturers in the automotive industry. During the three day event, over 220,000 people walked through the halls, gazing at the wonders the aftermarket community had to offer.

In addition to the display of automotive wares, competitions were held in three show categories: Dress Up car, Tuner car, and Complete car. This year, the winners were the GReddy V-7 for Dress-Up car, the Tomei Super Silvia (the Silvia is the Japanese version of the Nissian 240SX) for Tuner car, and the MR-2 Azuro for the Complete car class. The GReddy V-7 was a real show stopper, with gull wing doors and an aggressive, almost violent look. The MR-2 Azuro looked like a Ferrari, despite claims by Azuro that the resemblance was unintentional. The goal was to give the car smooth lines and to recall Italian design elements. In addition to the body work, the turbo system was massaged to 245 horsepower, and the suspension was upgraded using Bilstein shock absorbers. Although the car was certainly deserving, it was unusual for a car with relatively little engine and suspension modifications to win the Complete car catergory, which is regarded as the grand prize at the Salon."
