mr2-digest Friday, 20 October 1995 Volume 01 : Number 007 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Mark Sink - Imonics Development Date: Thu, 19 Oct 1995 11:26:58 -0400 Subject: SuperCharger BoostS >>I know most want a 5 speed, but the auto does offer some advantages in >>addition to ease in heavy traffic. The automatic is electronically >>controlled (economy/power) very responsive, 20% MORE boost from the >>supercharger over the 5 speed, and lower cruising rpm (to eliminated the >>drone of the 5 speed on the freeway). >20% more boost for the automatic vs. the 5 speed? Is this reflected in the >horse power ratings from Toyota? Does Toyota describe this extra boost in >any of their literature? This is the first I have heard of it. Is a larger >pulley used? I have never heard of this either. Probably something the dealer told him. If anything, it's 20% LESS, most automatics, if anything, have LESS HP than their 5 speed sibling, NOT more. Personally I think the 20% claim is BS (not knocking the poster of the msg, unless he's just saying that to fool ppl into buying the automatic) To get more boost, they'de surely be using a different pulley. If so, don't you think EVERYONE would know about it, would HKS go to the trouble of making a new pulley, if Toyota had one? I just can't see their being a pulley for the GZE that gave a 20% boost, and nobody knows about it. Does this mean Automatic Owners who bought an HKS pulley, had the possiblity of getting a pulley of the SAME size they had, or even smaller, since HKS does not distinguish 2 sizes?? Lets put an end to this story. All in favor of saying it's BS, say "I". I! mark Like I said, I'm not flaming the poster, just the info. ------------------------------ From: Stuart Smith Date: Thu, 19 Oct 95 12:53:49 BST Subject: Lotus Elise Have jsut seen a picture of this. I don't know if you lot have seen it yet, but it is GORGEOUS!!! It is the obvious successor to the MR2..which is kinda fitting since Lotus had a large hand in designing it in the first place.. I have uploaded a pic to geoff's FTP site. It's prob. in incoming, unless Geoff has moved it yet. (elise.jpg). I have a uuencode pic if anyone wants it. I had half a mind to enclose it, but I think David would probably have wiped it :-).. It can take quite a while (up to a day, as far as I've seen) for the reply to get back to you, depending on where you are, and your service provider. Current version of the FAQ is 1.71, dated 10/18/95. Recent changes: New mailing list addresses and subscription procedures, corrected a tire size (whoops!) and a few misc. tweeks here and there to keep things reasonably updated, Some canadian prices. Request for information: If somone has a current bluebook (yes, I know it's actually yellow) could you compile current prices for the various years and models with "real" equipment levels? Everything I've got is a year or more old. +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | mikep@diane.csg.mot.com | Email to mr2_faq_request@diane.csg.mot.com | +--------------------------+ with subject "FAQ" for a copy of the most recent| |1993 MR2Turbo #223 FRINGE1| MR2 FAQ. This is getting complictated! I'm afraid I'm one of the ones that can't stand this new format, but I know it's necessary...That's alot of cash David says it's been costing him, and for that reason the old list structure was as much use as a chocolate teaspoon to him. However...3 addresses, 4 mailing lists, modeerated newsgroup...AHHHH! I beginning to come round to the usenet idea, but why not just go the whole hog and make it unmoderated. Sure we'll get the odd bit of dross in there, but probably not that much more than we got before. I know David has said that one of the advantages of the digest is that we don't get spamms, etc, but come on! how many did we get! not very many. This is no real advantage as far as I can see. A Usenet group would be as near to the 'good 'ol days' as we could get. Also, I don't think I really like the idea of someone sensoring my posts.. 'Moderators only need to filter out submissions that are not germane, or illegal or grossly distasteful, or content-free. Approved requests go to the newsgroup.' Maybe the illegal thing was humour, someone didn't get, maybe what's distasteful to one is ok with another... What I'm saying is, the reason this digest was done was to save David money. FAIR ENOUGH. It was not to stop spam postings. So why do we need a moderated newsgroup? If anything, this will cost David more money than a non-moderated one, as he'll probably be one of the moderators.. Anyway, that's my 2c......what about everyone else? Stu ------------------------------ From: Mark Sink Date: Thu, 19 Oct 1995 14:33:33 -0400 Subject: club sticker Looks real good! How 'bout making the background the tread pattern from a Hi-Performance Tire, instead of those little oval shapped things. You could color the tread pattern black, or grey. Probably a light gray, so that it's not immediately noticeable that it's a tire pattern. Just a thought, it's looks really nice. My only concern is that the text "owners group" is very small in relation to the rest of the sticker. Once the sticker is cut down to 3" this lettering may not be readable. Keep it up, I like it. mark sink P.S. what do you think the best shape for the sticker should be? Square, Round, or Diamond? I think a diamond shapped, which is the way the logo sits, would be pretty nice. ------------------------------ From: "Burns, James B." Date: Thu, 19 Oct 95 13:15:00 EDT Subject: Sticker Designs Those sticker designs are really cool. We have some pretty talented graphics artists in our group. Here are my thoughts on the designs: My favorite is the Paul Thomas design. I love the colors and the shape/size and it is simple enough that it would good enlarged or shrunk. We are not really a club, so the "Club Member" is technically not correct, but I like it anyway. My next choice is the new Tyson Driggs design. I think something could be added to the word "Internet" like "Internet Group" or something. I would also like to see a black background rather than gray. I also think a turbo rather than a non-turbo MR2 would look better in the picture because the turbos have body-color side molding, and the black molding on the non-black car tends to cut it in half. Summers-SysAdmin" Date: Thu, 19 Oct 1995 11:02:57 PDT Subject: Question about the IACV 93/MR2 If I suspect that the IACV is perhaps somewhat gummed up with oil or oil/grime, then could I spray some carb cleaner or something similar down the throttle body to help clean it out. I just don't want to have to go to all of the trouble of removing the throttle body, (I just changed my coolant). I am unsure if it could be effectively cleaned in that manner because of its position relative to the incomming air stream. Any suggestions? Ideas? Thanks in advance. - -- + ------------------------------------------------- + + +++ N E C +++ +++ A M E R I C A +++ + + ------------------------------------------------- + + Marc L. Al Khowaiter) Date: Thu, 19 Oct 95 13:15:58 PDT Subject: TECH Questions I have just acquired a 91 Na MR2 in good shape. I have read the FAQ on the excellent MR2 page (good work Geoff). I intend to take this car home at the end of the year (home is Saudi Arabia - unenforced speed limits :-), leaded gas :-( ). Since the car is not sold in Saudi Arabia, and I will have to do most maintenance on my own, I have a lot of questions for you guys (and gals). So if I ask too many questions, please forgive me (time is short): 1. Leaded gas means removal of the cat first ( +10 hp :-) ). It also means the Oxy sensor will need to be replaced with one that can take lead in the gas. Does any one know if the O2 sensor on the MR2 is interchangable with other Toyota models ( say Supra, Celica ... all available back home)? I am hoping to use a lead proof O2 sensor from another car. I would think that it is a pretty standard item. Also if anyone has had similar experience, is there anything else to take into account for leaded gas? 2. The car is quite impressive, however I expected much sharper handling from a mid-engine. I am sure changing from the stock 14" alloy wheels to 16" (225/45 & 205/45) should make an improvement (if anybody wants to buy the full set of 14" wheels + tires in good condition e-mail me directly). I also intend to lower the C.G. with lower springs. Has anybody had experience with ~1.5" lowering springs (Eibach, H&R, Susp. Tech. ...)? Is there any improvement in the handling (not ride)? I tried to order the back issue of Sport Compact Car which had the article on installing Eibach springs, but they were out. If any one has the article they can send me I will cover charges (e-mail me directly). 3. The car I bought did not have the integrated fog lamps. I need to install daytime driving lights, preferrably the same as the OEM's. The wiring should be no problem since I have the wiring diagrams and I have done similar work. My question is does any one know of a cheaper source (Toyota wants $320 for the two - - without the wiring harness) for the fog lights? Is there an aftermarket version? Otherwise has anyone had success with any other fog lights? When I say success, I mean aesthetically as well as functionally. 4. Other than the ignition and air filter changes is there any way to get more power out of the 2.2 liter NA engine? Since I have to change the valve guide oil seals anyway, I will be removing the head back home. Has anyone tried shaving a bit from the head? Any recommendations (compression ratio/gaskets)? Once again, thanks everybody for your patience. I have really enjoyed this group. - -- Ahmad Al Khowaiter aok@squid.ucsb.edu ------------------------------ From: uunet!voodoo.ca.boeing.com!garye (Gary Eng) Date: Thu, 19 Oct 1995 12:18:49 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Re: 91T Rear Wheel Is there a race track near you where MR2s compete?
