MR2 T-Bar (with the new spoiler and more powerful engine). It's a nice car and drives well. It feels quick to drive but I expected the acceleration to be more noticable, you just seem to get to speed quick but you don't really notice it. I've had it upto 115mph and it pulled very well and I reckon it would have kept on going like that for another 10mph at least, then maybe tailed off. I've just got a few questions. Under braking (moderately, I've not tried braking too hard) the car feels as though it's fighting with you. the front end doesn't feel that stable and it kicks side to side a little on the stearing. Is this normal? Is it just 'cos of the stiffness of the front suspension or maybe the ABS. This is most noticable on a country lane where the surface isn't too good, so I've put it down to stiff suspension and the road surface. I'm a bit unsure of this tough as my 1963 MGB (with pretty stiff suspension) doesn't jump around so much down the same roads under braking and it's a bit of a dog on bad road surfaces. Before we bought the car we looked at quite a few. One thing I noticed was the wear on the drivers seat. The door side back support wing on the seat was worn on every car we saw. Some very badly even after 18000 miles. The car we got had got scuffed leather there and it not too bad. I even looked at a brand new MR2 in the dealership with 36 miles on it and the leather was almost as bad on our car! The only car I've seen where this has not happened is a friend's 1991 MR2 where the leather has gone wrinkled but not scuffed or worn. Is this as common a problem as I'm making out? If so, why have Toyota not used a better quality leather or at least a harder wearing leather on that part of the seat. Can anyone suggest a good treatment for the seats rather than being retrimmed? Yep the TBar squeaks a little (thanks to the FAQ I can fix that) and the CD player keeps spitting out CDs (the dealer says they will replace it with a new unit under warrenty). At full boost the gage should be pegged high. The original poster didn't give his location if my memory serves me correctly. When I lived in Colorado Springs (6500'+) the normal gage reading at WOT was between 9 & 10 O'clock. In the mountains it was lower. At lower altitudes my 91T pegs out the boost gage. I don't remember the exact altitude at which mine will peg the gage, but vaguely remember it was about 3500'. So this "may" be normal depending upon where he/she is driving. I'm about to take possession of a '91MR2T (only 40k miles) and was wondering what, if any, changes/improvements I should plan on making. Since I have a company car (Dodge Intrepid ES), I can have some fun with this one, and would like to get some advice on the best way to do so. I'm thinking wheel&tires (14" wheels and 200hp don't sound like a good mix) and some other suspension bits, but would like to hear what others think. Thanks in advance for your help - I have been following this list for a short time and the signal to noise ratio is quite high. I've got it in my '87, and it fits right in. I've been thinking of cutting the shifter an inch or two, though. IMHO the Momo Superanatomico is pretty damn great, shaped after your hand and with a phenomonal grip it won't let go easily, which the original has done for me a couple of times. Anyone has a Momo super anatomic shift knob. Does >it look right at home in a MKI and does it fit right in. What is it made >of and how is it compare to the factory knob David, I've seen a friend's MR2 with a anatomic shift knob. It was black and made of leather. It seems to fit best for lhd models. Rhd models (like fm where I come from) have to install it backwards. You see, it's anatomically shaped and therefore not symmetrical. I've also seen a friend with a Momo aluminum ball shifter. It's quite large and sits rather awkwardly, I think (just my opinion). Anyway, I don't know 'bout you but I shift at the neck of the gearshift. It gives me shorther throws. Therefore an anatomically shaped shift knob makes no difference to me in lap times. Anybody out there that has >blown one up, what did it? > > The only thing those chip upgrades do is raise the rev limiter, raise the fuel cut-off point, and maybe do a little tailoring on the ignition and fuel maps. The factory 3SGTE injectors (430cc) is still only good for approximately 17 psi, and that's with an upgraded turbo. The chip upgrades do work, but it does the same thing as an HKS FCD (Fuel Cut Defencer) and an HKS VPC (Vein Pressure Converter) less the timing changes. It just gives you less adjustment that you might need if you do some extra modifications (ie. porting, upgraded intercooler). I've had at least 2 3SGTEs melt pistons, numbers 2 & 3 mostly, due to manifold port CFM variances. Toyota decided to go with cast pistons from the factory, using oil squirters to compensate for the extra thermal load. If you decide to go for high boost levels, a set of forged pistons and possibly Extrude Honing of the manifold is recommended. There's one I've used for years that works great. It's called Spillmaster and has an adjustable "clamp" for the cup and a sort of tongue that slides between the passenger seat and back to hold it in place (obviously this would not be very usefull if you have a passenger in the car). It can also be mounted to the carpet or dash but, I havent tried that. I got it at Target but have seen it in other stores as well. It's pretty cheap, too. If you can't find them let me know and I may be able to get you one. That is because in my case, it was not an issue of throttle cable slack needing to be removed, but with no slack, pedal travel was not adequate to fully open the throttle. Call me silly if you want, but the 3 cable adjustments (one on the throttle body, 2 for the cruise control) do no more than adjust cable slack. With all slack gone, my pedal still only opened the throttle 75% when floored. Granted, that did get rid of a klunk that would happen everytime I'd turn off cruise, but it did not increase throttle opening. The throttle body cam itself can be adjusted as well, but the factory setting proved to be the most responsive. Unless I've missed something, the only item left is the bend in the throttle pedal which determines the 'throw' or travel. If there is a better way, please let me know, but after several hours of working on it, I saw no other way to increase throttle travel. I am not interested in opinions, just pure scientific data. Over the past 20 years I have been using and selling an oil analysis service that I am really a believer in for answers to these questions. I have been studying oils for a long time and continually hear the various opinions about who like what oil and I never see scientific data about it. The lab I use, United Testing, cannot reveal any data directly because they keep the results confidential. So what I would like to do is offer, at an extreme discount, the service I sell to those who will commit to provide me with the data. Before I discovered the internet, this would have been cumbersome to get someone to make a copy and mail it to me. I would like to compile a database of all the data and about every 25 or so reports that I receive, I will transmit the database to everyone who commits to participate. This way we can see other cars similar to ours running different oils and find out which oil might be better than ours. With an oil analysis history you can change oils and immediately notice the difference. If this study interests you please send me an email note and I will forward to you 3 samples from my car and more details about the offer. I bought a cupholder that is intended to hook into the window sill, where a piece of metal slips in between the glass and the seal. You push a button, and it pops out to hold a can or bottle, and you can retract it if you want. Not wanting to shove it into my window, I bent the piece of metal into an "S" shape, so that it fits perfectly clipped onto the door storage area on either side. I just hook it onto the storage bin near the front speaker, and it holds a can or bottle easily within reach. Scott MacLean CASMEL-I Artificial Horizons BBS arthor@cais.com Aviation!
