I just wanted to take the time to say thanks to all of you who have responded to my request for performance suggestions. All were a great help in determining what I'm going to do. It looks like the new HKS setup is going to a single tip exhaust instead of the dual tip. It's different and I may look at something else. Definitely going to raise the boost on the system. Has anyone looked at removing the intake box right before the air filter inlet? This looks mighty restrictive and like more air can get in without it. Thoughts on this would be helpful. I would also like to get a list of people in the DFW area. This is so some of us netters can get together and put names to faces. I had a similar problem with my '91 MR2 NA shortly after I bought it (used). The #2 spark plug boot kept popping out, making that cylinder miss. I checked the plug, and the threads were all blackened - compression in cylinder blowing past plug and forcing rubber boot off. The plugs were Champions, so I replaced them with NGK (per owners manual) and havn't had any problems since. - -Matt G. ------------------------------ From: uunet!dg-rtp.dg.com!miller (Mark T. The speedometer starts making horrible noises. Once it gets to 20 MPH it is very noisy, and the whole dash is resonating! Below twenty you can definately hear something rubbing. It was quite cold last night, so I think that has something to do with the noise - sure enough, in the sun this afternoon, the noise has abated. Anyone have some clue as to what to fix? Is there an easy way to fix it? If I recall correctly taking apart the dash pod is not lots of fun. Also if the problem is in the speedo, I think the unit is sealed (?) Any ideas appreciated! Rip Shack also now sells a nifty plug set that interfaces into the stock toyota radio wiring harness, thus allowing you to install a stereo without cutting off the toyota radio plugs. nice for re-installing the stock radio when you sell the car or have the other stereo out for service. dave ------------------------------ From: Itrat Khan Date: Mon, 20 Nov 1995 17:54:17 -0500 Subject: Re: About the front-end shakes I've got an '89 SC, and I've noticed something similar. On some roads, the MKI tends to pull to one side or the other. It sounds like your explanation fits. It's nothing serious, but I try to avoid uneven roads because of it. Do any other MKI owners have this problem. It sounds inherent to the MKI. It's never really bothered me because on *real* roads the car's great! My 85 which I bought in 89 has a similar problem. I tried replacing one of the front tie rod bushings and retainers, but it did NOTHING to fix the problem. That was in 1990. I haven't had it looked at since, just kept driving it. I have a feeling that it may be a problem with the rack and pinion steering. I pulled a 14 sec quatermile with 13 psi boost. This was with a bad gearbox. I had the box rebuilt but the second gear synchro is still acting up. It was real fun especially watching the top fuellers go geez they were fast. The temp was around 31 degress celcius I don't know what that is in farenheit If it was cool enough I could have pulled under 14s, I was really hoping for a high 13 but it was just to hot. My ET speed was 99 miles per hour. I was wondering if anybody has pulled a 13 sec quatermile running the standard motor with 15 psi boost. Thats planned for next time and a better gearbox :-> I had sprayed my intercooler down with water cooled by dry ice and placed a couple of chips in front of my intercooler. It helped quite a bit as it cut my times down by a quater of a sec. But the day was really hot!!!! The file name describes the engine. The last file is a picture of the book cover that the engine pictures are from. It is called "Neko Historic Car Books 5, Toyota Twincam," published by Neko Publishing Co. I think Classic Motorbooks carries it. If anyone wants a copy of these files, send me email. .BMP or .GIF versions also available (large). Hopefully these will appear on Matti's homepage in the near future.
