As for the shaking, I've been assuming a bushing but the suggestion of a bad bushing in the rack and pinion unit makes a lot of sense to me. So far, I've replaced the shocks with some KYBs and the sway bar links with some new stock units, but aside from better dampening, the front end still feels "loose". I think the bad steering rack bushing (assuming that's the problem) is amplifying my tire/wheel balance problem. - -Dean ------------------------------ From: uunet!netrunner.net!hkphoto (howard kuflik) Date: Tue, 21 Nov 1995 08:04:22 -0500 Subject: bubbles in the radiator Does anyone know why there is bubbles in the radiator headgasket was replaced and the head was shaved level there is no water in the oil. This is for those MR2, or others that may have a Crane HI-6 Ignition system currently installed on their car. 1. Was it easy to install? 2. How does it perform? 3. Do you think it was worth the money? 4. Would you recommend it to others? I have a 1993 MR2 Turbo, pushing 14 to 15 psi boost. For those that have turbos does the Crane HI-6 fire consistently at high boost? If so what is your plug gap set at? When I asked about getting just the strut housings for my '91 (since mine are tearing themselves apart) from the dealer, I was told that I would have to order the entire assembly (i.e. strut housing and cartridge) which would lend me to believe that the shop manual would not indicate the cartridges being a serviceable item. You should be able to look at the struts while they are on the car and be able to determine if the cartridges are replaceable or not. Look for a removable threaded cap where the strut shaft enters the strut housing. Mark '91 MKII turbo t-top red 144K miles Mark Shehan - Ford EV P/T Engrg.,Village Plaza,23400 Mich. Are you absolutely sure? Will it be a costly > replacement/repair? Does it affect handling? > > Adrian > 85 Mk I > Lotus Silver Frost Hi Adrain, First of all, let me thank you for your response. I have been using 185/60R14, the stock size on my 87 NA. As I have mentioned in my previous letter, I discovered that this is not a single case problem since I have checked the other Mk I's on the street. Most of them really have the mark on the bottom part of their front springs, which strongly suggests physical contacts with the tires when the front springs are compressed all the way down. Now, to your question, my springs are un-cut, and there isn't ANY modification to them since I bought the car. In your case of having bigger tires such as 195/50R15, I believe your spring may also have physical contacts with the tires. But perhaps you don't drive on rough road too often, that is why you don't notice it. Another possibility is that you have modified springs so that this problem doesn't apply to you. See, in my situation, I drive through Interstate 80 each weekend. There is a very rough part before I reach the Bay Bridge, and I can feel the front end is bouncing up and down and even "see" that the steering wheel is being "turned" by outside force everytime when I get through this particular rough road. In addition, same thing occurs in rough city roads even though if I am driving in low speed. Now about the affect of handling. I believe it's not that much of a problem as long as if the rough road is a straight one. But I remember one time when I was speeding through a very curve with rough surface, I actually lost that precise MR2 handling, and the fact is that I witnessed the front end slightly shiftin to left and right. I believe this is all due to the spring-tire-contact problem =( - --SL ------------------------------ From: Thomas F Wahjudi Date: Tue, 21 Nov 1995 13:18:34 -0500 (EST) Subject: Corolla GTi Gearbox GTi's gearbox is called C50, if I'm not mistaken. I take mine off, get a bucket of warm water, add some washing machine soap to the water and scrub the dirt off with a scrub brush and a garden hose. Hang it up, let it dry. (this only works for a fine day :) > A side note on masks: I personally think they are ugly, but a black mask on > a black car doesn't look too bad. The MR2 mask is a big-time pain to Yes, it looks really nice on my black car, but I think it looks too ugly on other colors (like yellow IMHO). I wonder why they don't make color matched nose masks/bras? > install -- I shredded my fingers trying to attach the clips under the fog > lights. I'll only use it for long trips or for the occasional racetrack Do what I did, cut the stitching on those clips and remove them. The edges of the mask will tuck under the fog lights no problem. BTW, I don't think the Toyota nose mask is too hard to install/deinstall, I've seen other brands that HAVE to be harder to put on/take off... Plus, the Toyota one fits like a glove although I think a few people have had problems with the fit (Nancy, you still out there?) The ONLY thing I don't like about the Toyota nose mask is that the fade- resistant red stitched "MR2" logo faded :-( It's now as black as the mask... It seems that all shocks are the same, the 94 are better in the way they handle but are built the same. If you take them apart, there is no strut, the external case is the used as a complete unit, and the oils will drip out and the shock is ruined. You uncap them and then use the case to house the cartrige on the aftermarket ones. I have a spare 94 and I will take it apart to confirm. I need the case anyway. ___________ ________________ ________ __ ___/__ | / /__< /___ __ )___ __/ _____ \ __ | / / __ / __ __ |__ / ____/ / __ |/ / _ / _ /_/ / _ / /____/ _____/ /_/ /_____/ /_/ (Kostas G. Peaople have said it's good to go with the SC exhaust for NA cars, but is there any benefit to going with an aftermarket exhaust for a SC?
