Perhaps I should be more specific about my objectives. I would like a decent increase of power without too much increase in sound. However, if the full SC exhaust does not help as much as a HKS, I'll go with HKS. Another query I have about US spec Mk Is is this: You mean '85 Mk I's have a cat too; as in cat-exhaust-exhaust? I think my two is a UK spec which probably does not have a cat (or at least I was sure it didn't have one when I first put in a performance muffler). I have since replaced it with the stock NA item from a friend (for reasons too painful to ponder) who had a US spec two. So I think it has a cat now ... or so the muffler guy tells me. Now I want to maintain a high level of discretion but still get a good power increase. That's why I am asking about SC vs HKS/Greddy. I am ultimately planning a Stage 4 HKS mod. I set out with my trusty navigator (Molly the springer spaniel) to find a deserted and slick road on which we could both wag our tails. A nearby industrial park beckoned us, and as I rounded a snow packed right-hander, low and behold the tail started coming out . . . (hmm, opposite lock) . . and out . .( uh, err) . . and around . . . and around . .(whine, slobber, "relax Molly, I'm sure we'll stop sooner or later" ) . . .we came to rest pointed in the right direction and, thanks to the MR2s centered weight bias, our spin was contained with in the boundaries of the road. I went back and tried it again but slow. I'm still trying to figure out what I should have done or not done to recover. I'm assuming I lifted mid-turn but can't recall for sure. Any suggestions? (and don't flame me unless you're prepared to come here and actually _show_ me how it's done) Please post your skid and skid-correcting experiences. The other question I've got is about LSD. (no. Limited Slip Diff, not the other kind) At one of last years autocrosses, one of the hot shoes was telling all about what I should do to my car (despite the fact that I don't really want to do anything to my car besides drive it) and swore that all older MR2s have a limited slip (he doesn't own a Mr.2 by the way). I read a lot about the car and never saw any mention of it. Is he right about this? Hi there, Does anyone know what might be causing my MR2's engine to "whir" after starting up. It's not misfiring and I'm unable to trace where the noise could be coming from. It's almost as if the starter motor isn't cutting out after successful ignition. I'll also add that it starts everytime and that reving the engine seems to make no difference. The "whir" stops after 2-3 seconds. Any advice would be great. It has been mentioned many times here and on the MR2 FAQ that the 91-92 MR2's rear suspension toe settings change when the suspension compresses which can cause loss of control in a turn if you switch too quickly from accelerator to brake. My question is: DOES THIS TOE CHANGE IN THE REAR SUSPENSION ALSO OCCUR ON AN '85 MR2? I know that the '85 and the '89 SC had the rear anti-sway bar which made them more twitchy. Also does anyone know exactly what changes were made to the mk1 rear suspension in late '87-early '88? Was it for the same purpose as the '93 changes? I simply increased the idle speed to 1000 RPM to fix the problem. The reason that the idle speed increases when you step on the brake pedal is because there is an electronic valve that is opened that supplies more air to the engine. This is to compensate for the extra load on the alternator, which would cause the idle speed to drop. This valve is also activated when the parking lights / headlights, defogger, or A/C is turned on. The EFI computer can also activate this valve. Note that their is a *second* valve that is activated when the A/C is on, that raises idle speed to around 1500 rpm. I'm getting this from the wiring diagram. The high idle speed (2000 rpm) following a cold start is normal. You do not have to drill holes, to say more you cannot anyhow. In order to perform this mod from 91 to 93 you just have to replace the suspension rear "bridge" as we call it here, then use the new longer arms. You can also up-date the rest of the arms, since the new ones are much better/stronger both front and rear. ___________ ________________ ________ __ ___/__ | / /__< /___ __ )___ __/ _____ \ __ | / / __ / __ __ |__ / ____/ / __ |/ / _ / _ /_/ / _ / /____/ _____/ /_/ /_____/ /_/ (Kostas G. Does anyone know of another solution without "drilling new holes" ??? I really feel uncomfortable and want to correct this potential problem. I thoroughly enjoy my MR2 and plan on pumping it up a little. i.e... exhaust sys, better cables, maybe a header-I'm still researching the process and the $$$. Second question any ideas ?? If I may ask be direct, I want to get it right.
