(After reading about shimmy caused by improperly torqued lug = >nuts on the MR2 web site I retorqued them to 76 exactly, but it didn't = >seem to make a difference) Any ideas on this problem (which is _real_ = >annoying)=20 When I purchased my 91 turbo in october, the car seemed quite twitchy on uneven surfaces. The tires front and rear were both beyond 50% of useable treadlife. After replacing all four tires it felt like I was driving a different car. I suggest you take another careful look at your front tires. If the inside shoulders are anywhere near bald, this could account for the instability, as the inner shoulders now would have a smaller diameter than the center and outside of the tires. Hypothetical explanation of how this could affect handling: As you are travelling down the road at a constant speed on a good flat road surface, the tire and wheel will rotate at a constant speed based on the average circumference of the tire at the contact patch. Now imagine a ridge that runs under the inner most edge of the left front tire. To maintain a constant road speed, the wheel must accelerate to compensate for the reduced circumference of the inside of the tire. The opposite is true for the outside of the tire. Thus a ridge in the roadway that goes from the one side of the tire to the other will force an acceleration or deceleration of the wheel rotation speed. This change in rotational speed is felt through the suspension and chassis and consequently generates a pull to one side or the other. Throw in a lot of these transitions and the car feels unsteady. Solutions: 1. Assuming the tires are not excessively worn, you could try rotating them to wear on the side with the most rubber. The car will probably remain twitchy for a while until the wear evens the tire out. 2. Get new front tires. My $200/10000. The ECU activates the vsv before (about 7-10" hg) manifold goes atmospheric ( 0"hg). Also, if the vsv is used, air is bled directly to atmosphere, causing the ABV to close more rapidly. When the pulley is installed, HKS instructs you to eliminate the vsv and plumb the ABV port directly to intake manifold pressure. Since the ABV has to wait until pressure goes over atmospheric ( 0"hg) to start closing, there is a slight, as you can say lag, in comparison to a stock setup. People have also asked if they can just leave the stock setup alone, ie keep the vsv working. The ABV also acts as a pop-up valve to sorta regulate boost at the factory 8 psi. Depending on the condition of the ABV spring, you sometimes can get away with leaving everything stock, but chances are, the ABV will open past 8 psi and the pulley affect will be cancelled. When the ABV is plumbed to intake manifold, pressure keeps the valve tightly shut, allowing all the air to be pressurized. So when I say low end will be affected, I don't mean overall power, just response. Our other rig has studs and I'd have to agree that they are comparable. Sales pitch was that they stay super duper longer than the Pirelli and Bridgestone Blizzaks (?) as those supposedly become like regular snow tires after about 5000 miles. On the other hand, my last rear summer tires only lasted 6000 miles so maybe it doesn't matter. What I had to do was open the rear trunk, remove the back trim cover and disconnect the ECC connectors, the cooling fan computer and the circuit opening relay. Push this entire wire loom through the engine compartment and over to the side. Also, disconnect the temperature sending unit right next to the alternator. Doing this gives you more room to work with. If you haven't already, remove the coolant over-flow tank. Just pull right up on it and remove the two hoses. When I pulled my alternator, it was pretty tight down on the lower mount. You just have to wiggle it back and forth. I pulled my alternator from the top, I don't think you can pull it from the bottom. Good Luck!! I did this conversion on my '85 Prelude with 55/100W bulbs and the high beams were really impressive. Back then I was living in Northern California and did a fair amount of night driving on semi-deserted twisty backroads, so these lights were really worth it. Now that I live in Maryland, there's always enough traffic that I can very rarely use my high beams, so upgraded lights are not a priority now. I miss those days of high speed night driving on a twisty country road and envy those of you who can still do it. Brad Burns '94T black ------------------------------ From: "Burns, James B." I hooked it up between the turbo and the accutator. Can someone tell me if i hooked it up in the right place?? I also put in a turbo boost gauge in the spot where the stock turbo gauge was hooked up. right now the boost gauge says im running max 16.5psi. does anyone know if that was a good place to hook it up?? Im running around a 14.5 quarter mile right now which seems like the same time when i was running when the boost gauge said 11 psi max. Also ive noticed that it doesnt matter if the valve is plugged up or not, the boost will still measure the same psi. Is this normal or when its plugged up completely should i definitely have a change in my boost??? I guess i need all around help and someone to hold my hand thru this. please tell me if someones tried to put on a homemade bleeder. THANKS!!! 91 turbo ------------------------------ End of mr2-digest V1 #80
