I am getting ready to buy my exhaust in a couple of weeks and I would like to know which exhaust system everyone recommends. I know that the HKS and the GReddy cost pretty much, but are they worth it?? I would like to limit myself to about $350 for the exhaust because frankly, I don't have $600 to drop on one. If I could get any suggestions or ideas, I would be appreciative. Thanx for your help!! I CAN speak from experience, and say that my stock turbocharger produces 1.0 bar of boost consistently (16.5 psi occassionally). I have repeatedly tried to achieve more by adjusting the EVC and VPC, but it will not produce. What is the maximum boost that someone has experienced, consistently, from the stock unit? How is it achieved? I like the dual exhaust look (especially with the 225s on the rear and I keep the tips highly polished) and don't want to put alot of $$ into something that will yield minimal results. I have a '91 NA and I know there isn't much you can do to turn it from quick into a "musclecar". No offense to anyone :-) Thanks in advance to any input. I know that the engines used in the Toyota atlantic cars (small indy type cars) is the 4age. I saw a race on ESPN2 and they had a little section on them. Says they make 240hp out of our same 1.6L displacement. WOW! Does anybody know where we can get the parts they use on those engines? I am not to sure if they use the 5-valve head or not. Anyone else see the article a while back in SCC about the supercharged Miata that ran 6 psi of boost with no mids to the injection etc? It seems like the MR2 NA's ought to benefit from a little boost like that, too, and an electric supercharger would seem like a great way to provide it. Anybody know how to get ahold of Ron Powell? I see these engines being sold in SportsCar (the SCCA publication) every month (new, used, rebuild, you name it!) and I have TOYed with the idea of getting one and put into a MR2 Mk1 (if I had time and money!). If my memory isn't playing tricks on me, there was one for $6,500 in the last issue (and Bertil Roos had a special on some used Toyota Atlantic engines....) and I think a new one is somewhere this side of $10,000. They have a 16-valve head so no 5-valves on that engine. The 240hp is produced at 9500rpm so I would guess they have a redline of 10000-10500rpm. - -Magnus ------------------------------ From: Jeffrey Ho See Date: Wed, 07 May 1997 11:23:32 -0700 Subject: Re: MR2 Japanese Ordering At 10:26 AM 5/7/97 -0400, Allan Stewart wrote: >> Clutch cover 33,000yen ($264) >> Plate (sports) 24,000yen ($192) >> Plate (metal) 42,000yen ($336) >> Prices not including tax at 5%. Most lamps have one side connected to the chasis ground for the bulb uses only the hot wire. THIS IS NOT the case with MR2 MKII. Both lamp wires must be connected to the circuit providing power for the lamps, this due to a peculiarity of the reostat that controls the dimming of those lamps. Take care and do it right. Three people are already going, so for sure we are on!!! So far, between the Supra group (SOGI), the Mr2 mailing list and the T-M list, we are hoping for all available and interested parties to spend either part or all of the weekend out carousing the roads. If enough people are interested, we will make this a full two day event, spanning a nice amount of distance to travel and including forrays into other states.... In search of senic routes and great drives!!! Activities are not yet for certain, but possibly include a picnic/cookout and/or a trip to the Volo Automotive Muesum. According to someone who has been there beore, this is a great place for automotively minded persons to visit.. And from what i hear the cars are all for sale... (not that many of us could afford to buy one, just that they are for sale!) Count on there being a good amount of time alloted for people to get to know each other, and to share their experiences, as well as showing off their stuff. Meeting grounds should be in the West Suburbs somewhere, details are forthcoming. All information will be posted at http://www.cen.uiuc.edu/~ssdavis1/events.htm "for your viewing pleasure..." If you are interested, either for sure or just possibly, let me know via Email and I will make sure that I keep you updated!!! Looking forward to a great turnout for this event!!! In the future... Other possible events include a track day at either Gingerman (SW. MI) or out by Rockfort (NW. IL) in August sometime... Anyone interested? If you have any other ideas, please let me know!! Thanks! Have a Bra since I bought my car back in 88. Don't remember the brand (it doesn't say), but its a super high quality "color" bra...in my case, "white" vinyl to match my MR2 (I seem to recall they were available in red too), so its not as conspicuous as it would otherwise be... Anyway, while it ain't as pretty as without and like Steve says, takes all of 30 secs to remove or put on, its preserved the front of my car like new for almost 10 years now. So, rather than feed my rad and beak a steady diet of mosquitoes and rocks, I'll live with the hassle. Having said that, it does not flap or come loose (tried up to 220kph) and the car seems faster "with" Bra than without. The reason for all this wasted bandwidth is, that its now finally getting a little tired (despite having had it repaired a couple of times). Does anyone out there know if these Color Bras are still available and if so, where? Oh yeah...the Deer...well I "almost" clobbered (or got clobbered by?) a Bull Moose going up to the Track at Mt. Tremblant just after dawn last Fall (you know...Mating Season...he must've been 1200lbs). When I managed to stop (sideways about 25ft from him), he just glared at me. I think if I wouldn't have backed up, he would've charged. No, I don't think the Bra would've have helped... To me, the Lexus is a very quite bug-free car....but they have very little "personalty". They are dependable- and the 4 liter V8 is a gem (quiet, smooth & powerful). However major services are a bear - thing has timing belts. Dealer wants $900 for that service. The six, I'm told, is a sleeper & under-appreciated over ' here. I've never driven it but from what I've heard I'd opt for the 6. I didn't realize that foir the coupe at least, the SC300 & 400 share the same body - they don't on the sedan. Bras - I've never liked them. I used mine once (it came with the car) when I drove up the Sierras during winter. The headlight covers kept flapping on the paint, leaving a mark (I rubbed it out). Anyone want's mine (Mk 1) it's theirs for $40 + shipping. These started over 30 years ago from Porsche's idea - they dreated these to use then they tested the cars and didn't want paint damage prior to delivery. It was called a Steinschutz something-a-ruther( Stone Protection something). I can see using them if you know you're on a road with a lot of gravel - but normally they look tacky IMHO. I have a few "chips" on my car - so what? Means the car is getting used - Funniest sight I saw was an old faded Hyundai with one of those things. Rev Limits - So, getting tired of the engine? I suppose you could disconnect the rev-limiter somehow but WHY? fIRST (DAMN, MY CAPS LOCK IS STUCK ON THE CRAPPY DELL BUT i'M NOT STARTING OVER!) tHE TORQUE CURVE IS SUCH THAT MORE REVS WON'T GET YOU ANYTHING - UNLESS YOU GET A NICE TRD CRANKSHAFT (LIKE THE fORMULA ATLANTIC) SOMETHING'S GOING TO GO "BOOM" SOONER OR LATER - WHY? tO HEAR MORE NOISE? wELL, GOTTA GO - i AM NOT SHOUTING - JUST IN THE uNIX SHELL (HEY, THIS IS STARTING TO LOOK LIKE A RANSOM LETTER)...mATT - i PLAN ON GOING TO THE RALLY BUT MAY NEEY YOU GUYS IN SAM SIMEON - DID YOU GET THE PICTURES? bILL (SmAlL bILLs onLy OR yOUR hAMSTer gET'S iT!!! aND no cOppERS! ------------------------------ From: Mattled@webtv.net (Matt Ledbetter) Date: Wed, 7 May 1997 15:31:08 -0500 Subject: Re: MR2 MK1 Rev limit mods I have the TRD Atlantic parts list if anyone is interested. What I've read though (american car rags, we don't get the turbo sc300 here) says that if you are interested in driving/perfomance experience then the sc300 manual is the equal of the sc400 automatic. Now I'd think that the 2turbo sc300 would definitly be more of a performance car than the sc400. BTW I read in the new autoweek that all 1998 v8 lexi (plural of lexus?) will have a 300 hp variable valve timing engine, and they will sell a gs400 sedan. IMHO the gs300 is the best looking jap. sedan going. I think it loosks really solid with the reduced window glass area compared to many other sedans. A 300hp sc400 should be a nice car to drive...
