Hi, I have a 87 MR2 with midnight blue and dark blue interior and I need to chose a color to have it repainted but I want something that will " stick out " a little more and of course be really nice. I was thinking of a bright YELLOW! but I have that dark blue interior and I would probably get laughed right off the street with that color scheme. Maybe not! Anybody have any cool ideas! Thanks! Or if it is cheaper if I can find the parts in the U.S. and have them shipped to me (not necessarily overnight)? I have a red '85 with a fairly solid engine that needs 2 rear quarter panels and a front valence. I've been hunting this stuff down for a year now and it's hard to come by at junkyards. Similar problems occur in slow traffic in first gear at idle or just above idle. It's almost impossible to modulate the accelerator without the car starting to buck." I bought the car with only 10K miles on it 18 months ago and it had the problem when I bought it although I didn't notice it because I was to busy enjoying the performance on boost. Car now has 27K miles. In general the car runs strong with no missing, however, it does not like to lean out. The symptoms are almost like turning off the ignition when you get off the gas, then turning it back on when you give it a little gas. I checked for error codes and found one for something in the distributer (Code 12 or 13, my memory fails me). I checked distributer resistances according to the manual and they were all within spec. Since resetting that code 5K miles ago it hasn't reappeared. The only other symptom is light pinging during warmup under light acceleration. I've tried checking most of the easy items (OK it was the shotgun approach, but at least I'm more familiar with what to expect in the future) including: Cleaned and regapped plugs Replaced distributer cap and rotor with Toyota parts Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) Idle Speed Control (ISC) MAF EGR System T-VIS (it does move) and T-VIS VSV Air Bypass (Blow Off Valve) and VTV ($32 bucks when you break them pulling off the hose!!!) I also tried to check Fuel Cut RPM but don't have a good tachometer My next step is to replace the plugs and wires since they are still original. I'd appreciate any recommendations regarding wires (Magnecor seems to have been discussed a lot recently 8.5mm or 10mm?? - Nology seems like overkill for us mere mortals) and plugs (Nippondenso/NGK/Beru??). - -- Any recommendations including sources, telephone number and price would be appreciated. Beyond the ignition replacements my next thought would be O2 sensor or god forbid ECU$$$$. Any help would be appreciated. If you prefer to e-mail direct my address is: cumminsr@erols.com P.S. For anybody living or working in the Northern Virginia area I'd be interested in swapping test drives to get alternative opinions on the scope of my problem. FWIW: The '92 was an easier swap than the '85, as their was a little more room in the doors to move your arms around. "How difficult is it?" That is best answered based on your mechanical abilities. I followed my instincts (not a manual) and I thought it was very straight forward, and basically *simple*. I am not a gear-head, but I like to turn wrenches. Good Luck, Dave E. No the person Mr. Reynolds talked to was not me (You know , Cathy, that so-called Toyota spy, the one with the MR2 sitting in her driveway) Toyota is very much aware of the MR2 list and the digest. And yes I agree that Toyota should be more involved with the MR2 owners, because there is so much they could learn from us. Now about Toyota Customer Service or better known as Toyota Customer Relations. The person he was talking to was (I doubt) not stupid. In the first place in order to even have the job, she has to have a four-year college degree. And they have to go through extensive training. And yes it is a tough job. Toyota Customer Relations handles thousands of calls every day and I do mean thousands. I have written Mr. Reynolds and offered him assistance with whatever his problem is, as he did not tell us. I am a very proud MR2 owner and whenever I respond to someone's question it is because I want to help other MR2 owners. There is nothing in it for me except to help another person. Something I like doing. So Mr. Reynolds, tell me your problem, I'm willing to help. Everytime I meet someone that has an MR2, I ask them if they subscribe to the digest and recommend that they do. Not only will they learn, but they will meet a lot of nice people like I have. See ya! Cathy CRM, Toyota ------------------------------ From: Randy Chase Date: Mon, 14 Jul 1997 22:00:05 -0700 Subject: MR2 Toyota Customer Relations Leave it to me to point out the obvious (less flaming that way 8). I think it's very admirable that Cathy (our resident Toyota spy), takes the initiative to help out other MR2 owners, and has offered to help Mr. Reynolds. We all tend to point out when Toyota does bad (like my experiences trying to buy a car), but we should also point out when someone who works for Toyota does well (like my recent experience buying parts from my local (Kearny Mesa Toyota) parts counter.
