The " TOYOTA " and the " GT " (the variant, a Japanese GT in my case) Badges on the Back of my MKII have lost their colouring. I've only had the car for 9 months or so and the badges are Red (same colour of the car) with a white outline around some of the letters. The Question is what colour are they meant to be?, and is there a way to restore these to the original colour as they came out of the factory?. Thanks ------------------------------ From: John Stapleton Date: Tue, 04 Nov 1997 18:50:12 +1000 Subject: MR2 Door wiring harness + immobiliser Hi All! Amer Haque asks if anyone has any ideas on what a new door wiring harness would cost, and how many labour hours a dealer would (should?) charge to replace it? Amer, I am an auto technician and I wonder why you need to replace the whole harness. Toyota wiring is as good as you will get. Have you melted it or something? I am sure that a new harness is available ex factory and to install it would take an hour or two when you consider that it terminates in a plug arrangement near the footwell. As this would be an infrequently requested item, Toyota would put a pretty high price on it to cover their storage and inventory costs. My gut feeling is to fix your existing one unless you have fried it badly. Alternatively your local 2nd hand parts man may have one for ten bucks. Best of luck, if you were in Brisbane, Australia, I would offer to do it! In the next Digest, Merrick Wolfe asks "What do you suggest for a security system?" He goes on to say that one person suggested he not waste money on an alarm system but just get an ignition kill. My main business is the manufacture of a vehicle immobiliser system. It is much more that just an ignition kill, it also kills the starter motor and the electric fuel pump (when fitted). I have removed many many malfunctioning Vipers, Cobras, Repellers and Laserlines and fitted my automatic triple immobiliser in their place. Quite a few insurance companies here in Oz make the fitting of a device such as mine mandatory before you get theft cover. I do not mention this as an advertisement as I am sure that is not what this Digest is for, but I wanted to answer Merrick's requeat for information. Yes Merrick, get a GOOD immobiliser and forget the pesky false alarms. I have decided that I NEED to replace my low resistance dual in-line resonator exhaust on my '87 MKI with a more sedate system. Unfortunately, my budget seems to be just about tapped out, so I'm hoping that someone on the list might be able to help me out. I need a muffler (stock or unwanted performance muffler), anything that is not rusted beyond usefulness for my faithful 2. If you have a spare, please let me know. If someone wants to consider a swap, I'd be more than happy to do so. What I have on there now is (starting from the cat towards the tips): pipe to resonator(1) to pipe to resonator(2) to pipe to dual chrome Anza tip (with resonators in each tip). Essentially, it's about as free flowing as straight pipe. It's a bit loud and very throaty. It's not too loud though, I've gone by cops plenty of times and never had them mention anything about the sound. It's more throaty than anything else. Also, can anyone from the DC area give me a ballpark price on the cost of replacing the clutch? Where did you have it done? First, on the thread of the worst drivers, Tokyo has plenty of examples of idiot drivers, and the roads are nuts! It may not be the worst city to drive in but it sure is the wildest there is so little room in the city that a few expressways actually go *through* buildings! I only drove at night as during the day nothing moves, but even then it was quite busy. I spent Saturday at the motorshow and I still don't think I saw everything, it was huge as were the crowds especially around the home car makers. I took a long look at the MR-S from all angles and I've come to the conclusion that there is one thing that prevents me saying that I would buy it; the shape of the front. Other mid-shipped cars on show (Lamborgini, Ferrari, etc.) also share the same short front but it just doesn't look quite right on the MR-S. I guess it has something to do with the proportions of the car and the way the front is cut off rather than being more tapered. From listening to the conversations going on around me that seemed to be the opinion of quite a few people. Making it a little less square might help too. The only other addition I would like is some kind of boot, maybe they could extend the front just a little to make the car a tad more practical. The car looked 'fun' and that seems to be Toyota's aim with the car; a sports car with good handling, a pleasure to drive, quick but not a 'pocket rocket'. On a different note, after the motor show I went back to Shinjuku, which is an area of Toyko, to one of Sega's amusement centres. Not the normal game centres but a place called 'Joypolis', where they have the more hi-tech games/rides. There's a few in Tokyo but the one in Shinjuku is the only place where you can take part in the 'Sega Rally' game in a *real* Celica GT4 (Alltrack)!! The have 3 of them all on hydrallics, like on the aircraft simulators, and they react to the way you drive. It was a blast! If you are ever in Tokyo it is a 'must do'. BTW I took plenty of pictures of the MR-S but I haven't finished the film yet so it'll be a week or so before I put them up on my we page. I also have noticed how great the MR2 feels on cold Minnesota nights... Intercoolers will only provide a benefit in a forced induction scheme. This is because the intake charge temperature goes up when it's compressed by a turbo/supercharger. The hope of an intercooler is to get the charge temperature back down again as close to ambient as possible. In a normally aspirated setup, there is nothing compressing and heating the intake air. Any rise in intake temperature that takes place is simply due to the heat of the motor which an intercooler would not address. In fact, you'll probably do more harm than good because of added restriction. I believe that the best way to attack this is by using some some sort of a scoop like the Tom's, or anything you can do to keep the intake air from being affected by the heat of the motor. A properly designed ice-box could help, but I wonder about the HP vs. weight gain... My $0.02, Andrew P. The dealer doesn't believe that it is tire related and therefore, thinks that the wheel is at fault. The leak is a couple pounds a week (but in the last two days it went from a little low to flat). If the wheel were not true how can I tell? If the wheel is true round and the tire is not at fault, can their be another problem with the wheel? are alloy wheels subject to "leaking?" There were old tires on the car when I bought it and I had the same problem with both tires. They were in bad shape (green to brown colored sidewalls and minimal tread) so I assumed they were at fault. The tires now on the care are 4 months old (Dunlop SP 4000) and the problem seems to be with just one tire. If it turns out that it is a wheel and it needs to be replaced does anyone have one for sale (15 x 6JJ 45)? I presume new stock alloys are a fortune. I just bought a new Alpine motion detecting car alarm. It has automatic door locking (I have manual locks) and ignition kill. The best part about it is that it will go off if you dip your hands inside the t-tops. This doesn't mean much now, as it is the rainy season, but during the summer it is a real pain to have to put the tops on every time I park out of sight. Another advantage of the motion detector system is that it "chirps" when someone gets near it/ bumps it. At this point it arms itself. Hopefully this will be a good deterrent.
