The ST bars are thicker than the stock ones which results in the nut not fully threading onto the stabilizer end-link. (Only one-two threads though) Anyone know of better stabilzer end links one might be able to fit on a '91t or at least a way to make sure the nuts stay tight? Thread locker maybe? BTW, I *love* the handling affects of these bars but I suspect there are a little too much for the stock stabilzer links as I've heard of a couple of people having problems in this area. I have never cleaned the foam element, externally it appears clean. How does anyone clean this?? Also on the subject of Blizzaks by Bridgestone my Automobile Magazine had an excellent write up and test on these tires compared to all-season radials. The All-Seasons were found to be superior on dry road and in the rain. The Blizzaks were found to be superior only on snow and they really stood out. On a snow covered course a new Camry with Blizzacks actually out performed a 4WD Pathfinder with the same tires. Incredible!!! So much for the 4WD theory. Changed coolant, now engine squeals. Today I tried to replace the coolant on my 89 NA MK1 (UK) and when I started the car it ran for a short while then a high pitched squeal/screeching noise started coming from the engine bay. I stopped the car immediately and saw a little steam coming from the right side of the bay roughly below the coolant filler hole. I had spilled some coolant on the belt below when pouring in coolant and couldn't tell if it was leaking coolant. The cause of the problem could be due to the following: I couldn't drain all the coolant because I couldn't undo the radiator _pipe_ bolt under the car so only got out at most 7 litres (almost 2 US gallons) of coolant from the radiator itself and the engine. When I put coolant into the filler hole in the engine bay (with all 3 air valves open) I put in almost exactly 5 litres of coolant and found the front two service hoses had coolant in them: the heater one up as high as the fill hole and the one from the radiator only a little (an inch or two). The fill hole in the engine bay was full with coolant but I didn't notice any coolant coming from the air valve in the left side of the engine bay. At this point I closed the 3 air valves and put the filler cap on the 1st stop (not closed tight) and started the car, when the above noise happened. Now, I drained about 1 to 1.5 litres of coolant from the engine and about 5 litres of coolant from the radiator. Since I used only 5 litres of coolant (exactly one big bottle of Toyota's Long Life Coolant that looks remarkably like blackcurrant drink) could there be a blockage around the engine starving it of coolant and screwing up the water pump? My car has 68000 miles on it, I don't think the coolant was changed by Toyota 48000 because the invoice for the 'C' service they did doesn't list coolant in the parts list along with the oil & air filter, plugs etc. It may have been changed at 24000 because the service hoses had some red coolant stains where the hose had been flattened a bit. The coolant that came out wasn't particularly thick or filthy -- it didn't have bits in it and was a bit thicker than say milk. In case it's important: when I looked at the coolant in the fill point after the engine squeal it was quite frothy. I started the car again and after only a second or two the squeal appeared. I stopped the car and looked at the fill level and it had dropped a bit and I added about 50ml of coolant before it was full again, still frothy. BTW, I followed all the instructions from the Toyota workshop manual. The bit I'm most puzzled about is the air bleeder valve in the left side of the engine bay. It's just a valve/cock and has only a clear hose running from it to the coolant reservoir bottle. So what do the instructions mean by 'pour in coolant until coolant overflows from the air bleeder cock (in the engine bay)'? Is the coolant supposed to flow from around the bit you turn to undo this valve/cock or what?! I assume I've done a bad job of getting the air out. If so, have I done any permanent damage to my car? The coolant needle didn't move from its cold position when I was running the car for the short time before the squealing. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. I really need to finish this off tomorrow if possible. Do I simply need to try bleeding the air out again or have I really screwed something up? Thank you _so_ much for you time! Please reply DIRECT! My '85 had a similar problem. It started popping out of 4th regularly. At first I could hold it in gear but later it became impossibble. My tranny also was very noisy. You could hear the noise clearly with the clutch released and the car idling in neutral. With the clutch depressed the sound was gone. My '85 had 175k on it and all estimates for repair were too high to justify, so I just kept driving it. I was told that the tranny could keep working for some time, or fail at any time with the problem. I started looking at parts cars, then found a pristine '88 with 62K and purchased it for $4900. The following day, I kid you not, the tranny on the 85 went completely. I managed to coast off the highway, I was in the left lane. I had the car towed to a friend's friend and traded the car for some cash and future fender work, light rust, on the '88. Im looking for a system that gives better flow, but doesn't sound like a monster at idle or part throttle, as for WOT I don't mind if it sounds like hell rising (in fact, I'd love it if it sounded like hell rising). I've found that if I lightly push the shifter toward 3rd before sliding it down into 4th, I don't usually get the crunch. I've always had the reverse problem. Double clutching usually solves it. Double clutching doesn't seem to help my 5 to 4 problem. My car is a '91 Turbo with a 5/90 build date and presently has 93,000mi. Regards, Kevin D. The number is (305) 888-2828. They have a much better intake and pipe modification (Powermax filter). I just ordered one myself today for my '85. They now include all mounting hardware and pipes. Our Michigan guys on this list dyno tested this filter against a K&N open filter and found a big difference in power from the Powermax filter. This filter is only available from Select Sales though. This filter was also tested on a mk2 MR2 in a recent issue of Grassroots Motorsports, with similar excellent results. This is definitely the first mod I'd perform on any NA MR2. The filter and hardware costs $117 American Dollars and includes shipping and a cleaning kit, according to Steve.
