Subject: MR2 Hand made by Yamaha In 1992, I toured the Motomachi Plant in Toyota-shi (Toyota City). The plant builds Carinas, Camrys, ES300 (Lexus), Coronas and others. VERY cool tour. I asked the guide about the MR2 plant. She rummaged through some papers, and said it was built at the Central Sagamahara plant. She indicated that the plant produced about 2000 cars (MR2s?) a month. She said the plant we were in produced about 2000 cars a day. Through a source at Toyota, he said the cars are built by Yamaha, like a sub-contractor. The quantities are too small for a Toyota plant. In effect, they are practically hand built. Sorta like the way Porsches are assembled (sorry, couldn't resist). If you'll all take look, you can see Yamaha on the side of the timing covers. This is true for the Celica All-trac motors. Just think something in common with a SHO :( Sorry for any spelling errors on the Japanese plant names. I noticed that the turbo, due to lack of any backpressure would very easy rev up, even when there was no need at all. So I took it easy and slow. The drive was on rather level ground for about 3 km. I got everything OK BUT I noticed oil in the air duct till the location of the blow-out right at the entrance of the intercooler and NO oil into it. This assured me the oil was leaking after the blow out and durring my short travel. I cleaned the oil and put everything back on. I used the car for a month and checked every week for oil in the air duct. NO sign. Then the same thing again, the air duct blew off at the same point. Back the same route and again the same oil in the duct. Clean etc etc, drive check, months later now and no problem. In the meantime I fixed the bead on the pipe so as not to blow off any more. I talked it over with a racer and he informed me that it is the air pressure that keeps the oil from creaping out of the turbo bearings, and that gone the oil will flow out. He said not to bother as this is standard and by no means the turbo in fault. I had this posted sometime ago.
