To anyone who can help: I have a 1985 Toyota MR2 with 145,000 miles. The engine in my car runs really rough. It misses bad, especially during acceleration or when the throttle position is changed. As a result of this missing, the car has very little power and is almost dangerous to drive. The car runs perfect for about 2 minutes when it is cold (idles REALLY HIGH) and runs horrible after the motor has warmed up. Even when warm, the motor does not miss at 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 thousand RPM - BUT - when you try to accelerate and the RPM increases, say from 1 to 4,500 RPM - the motor MISSES and stalls and has no power during the transition from 1 to 4500 RPM. Once cruising at 70 mph @ 4000 RPM things are fine. Try to accelerate to 71 mph - just by breathing on the throttle - and the car misses bad. I have replaced the following with NEW parts: fuel injectors fuel pump platnium tipped spark plugs spark plug wires distributor cap 02 sensor In addition, I have tried a different ECU (from another 85 MR2), and have tried a different ignition coil and igniter (again from another 85 MR2), and have throughly inspected the entire emission control system for vacuum leaks. NONE of these things, including the new parts, have helped the car the least bit. It still runs really rough/misses when accelerating. The next item that I suspect is the throttle position sensor. The measured voltage between the IDL and ground terminals on the ECU is 3.8 volts when the throttle is wide open. The service manual indicates that the proper voltage should be between 10-14 volts. Could a bad throttle position sensor cause the car to miss and stall like this? How critical is the throttle position sensor? If not the throttle position sensor, what else, besides what I have listed, could be the source of this trouble? Have you heard of any other MR2's, Toyotas, or any other vehicles on the face of this planet that have had this type of trouble? I do have the Toyota service manual for the car and have run through all of the troubleshooting items. Any help - from anyone - would be greatly appreciated. So far, I have read 2 different ways: 1.4 60-40mph stops, then a few 60-0 stops to "cure" the brakes. or 2.4 40-20mph stops and that is it. Anyone with a better procedure? I don't want to glaze the pads! On another note, I replaced my Right front lower A-arm today, and I must say, it is great to have my Mr2 back! I went curb hopping on Tues. to avoid and accident, and have been waiting for the part since. Also today, I replaced the fuel filter, rotor, cap, and bumped up timing 2 degrees. The car seems to pull a great deal harder now! I know that bumping up timing showed no increse on the dyno and more than likely the difference was from the new parts, but I am just playing around with it for now. It was the first time I have ever seen a timing light in action, much less use one, and it is a pretty cool tool. Hi guys I just got some Royal Purple ATF into my 89 MK1 NA 5 speed gearbox, I was recommended to put the ATF in rather than use their Maxgear gearbox oil. So far I can feel that it is a better lubricating oil, cause on hard shifts it no longer crunches. However because its so thin, the shift feels really notchy. So, is this stuff any good? its still pretty new here in Australia and from all the literature I read it looked like a good product. Should I be using the ATF? it looks a bit too thin for me, Im usually using Mobil 1 gearbox oil which is 90weight. Are their racing engine oils any good? Im currently using Mobil 1 5W40. I was recommended to use their Royal purple #41 which I believe is a 5W30 Is there any damage done by over filling the C52 tranny with gearbox oil? Apart from more drag, I have over filled it by about 500ml and it feels much better, was wondering how much more I can put in. Richard are you out there? Richard has changed computers recently and hasn't gotten his new computer set-up yet. Richard has apparently discovered an important difference between the 91 and 93 turbos. It appears that the 91 Turbo uses a CT-26 turbo housing, but the compressor wheel is a smaller wheel - from a CT-20?? Whereas the 93 has the larger CT-26 compressor wheel. Richard apparently found this out through Majestic Turbo in Florida. This is apparently one of the reasons why there is a difference in stock boost levels between 91 and 93.
