Hope no one takes offense to this, but I'm sitting on a Gtech/Pro here (well, not literally) which I'm dying to get rid of (also not literally). I ordered one back in August, used it for a total of 2 days, and then put it back into the box. Procrastinated into passing the 30 day money-back guarantee mark. I already set up a sell to someone off the list, but he canceled on me after 2 months of waiting. So now it's open to anyone who's got a curiosity about the performance of their MR2's and $120 lying around. A new one would cost $150 with shipping I think, and this $120 also includes shipping. 2 months ago I put all the stuff back into the wrapping, manual, little rubber things, everything. Practically new. Visit www.gtechpro.com if you want tech specs. Btw, a warning- if you don't have access to FLAT roads or a track, don't waste your money here, trust me. Also, I've been meaning to write something about Joe for a while, but now it seems like everyone's already summed it up for me. As with many others, I never met him, but he did answer some of the questions I had. He was always sincere and supportive, and because of that, he's always been the person I most admired on this list. I have a few digests of the list from back in the 80's, and whenever I go back to read them I'm always amazed by the camaraderie and friendship people displayed. The type of personal interactions in those old e-mails made me think of Joe. He didn't just help you solve your problem, but he did it in a way which let you know he was happy to do it. A genuinely nice guy... No pretenses. How often do you run across someone like that? The '91Ts were modified by Mike Burlas and PJ Bonifacio. They have Wide wheel flares to accomodate 245/40-17 rear tires. Headlights pop-up only 1/2 way to reveal projector beam lamps. Garret intercooler is installed in Trunk, with ram air ducts through the coolers. Fuji Auto in Walnut, Calif fab'd solid alum engine mounts supported in rubber. A'pex AFC, and various other engine mods yield 13.1 second quarter-mile times. Cars were awarded First Place at the Goodtimes Motorsports Autorama in San Jose in Feb98. This is generally due to a bad valve cover gasket on a hemi-head car. Happens all the time on V-6 Mazdas, and is about an 8-hour job on that car to fix (rear valve cover is a real PAIN to get to!). This will over time tend to break down your spark plug wires. Which is why you see those V-6 Mazdas with new plug wires all the time.... It looks like a pretty easy job to R&R the valve cover on the MR2. Not sure what a gasket costs (I'd hope maybe $20). Loose spark plugs shouldn't cause this - there's no oil under them (better not be or you DO have a problem!) I think on the old Chrysler hemi the cup around the plugs was held in by the plugs, so it could have had that effect. I don't know of any modern engine that is set up that way. Oh yeah, check to make sure the valve cover bolts (or are they nuts? Whatever.) are tight (Not too tight, but not loose). That will definitely cause this problem, but it's probably a failing gasket or you'd see leakage to the outside too. Any chance you can get ahold of that mechanic who was the previous owner? :-) No idea about mechanics in NJ - that's over 2000 miles out of my sphere! I tend to avoid dealers except for warranty work (and even then if possible). I do all the work I can myself. I may not be competent, but I do care about what I'm doing.... There are some good mechanics at dealers, but finding one may be a chore. You might call around and see if you can find one who claims to have an MR2 guru - there ought to be enough dealerships around there you might just find one. Given the reaction you got from one, it sounds like those who don't know anything about them would just as well not see it, so hopefully if someone does sound willing to work on it, they would know something? Worth a try anyway.... Good luck! As I've done this upgrade, I can tell you this: - the '93 TB is the same diameter as the '91 - the '93 inlet tube is 5mm bigger than the '91 and doesn't taper down - the '93 TB has a non-linear linkage (more like exponential) vs. the '91's on/off linkage. This makes power application much smoother. - the '93 TB has a vacuum advance(?) mechanism vs. the '91 that has none. (dunno the benefit or reason for this... Kostas?) - you need to upgrade the connector stay as well (see Kostas' article on the web site) Geoff '91t, 251,200km (soon to have EGT and water injection to prevent rebuild #2 ;) ------------------------------ End of mr2-digest V2 #1866
