Monroe This may be a dumb question, but why does everyone use Tokico struts? Most of the posts I've read are negative as far the ride on the street and from what I can tell you feel every little bump and slam on the big one's. If I'm going to be driving mostly street, maybe canyons on the weekends, and the once a year trip to the track, wouldn't I get a much better ride with good old Monroe Gas-Matics. Along with a good set of Eibach springs is there really that much of a difference with performance struts like the Tokico's. Enlighten me.... Thanks. Daniel P.S. I pulled the flywheel off my 91T last night/this morning and was actually suprised by its weight...or actually lack of weight. I put it on my bathroom scales (used primarily for weighing nitrous bottles :-) and it said 15 lbs. That seems pretty light to me. Plus the resurfacing will shed a few ounces off. How shocks feel is somewhat subjective. I an tell you that I don't think the Tokicos are too stiff for the street. You can adjust them down to pretty soft (close to stock) and I normally left the rears full stiff for street. If you upgrade springs, you should also upgrade struts. I question why you have no problem with upgraded (stiffer) springs and don't want to do the struts? Big advantage for Tokicos is that for a small increase in price, you have adjustability. This is a big thing for tuning your handling, as you can soften or stiffen each end of the car. I sure wouldn't want to do Canyons on the weekends and track once a year without some tunability. "Tunability"...the ability of a fish to make a good sandwich. Sorry. It's late. Today, on my way to work, a saw a real nice Honda buy some concrete on the southbound 405. Damned near took me with him. Inches... Too many close calls lately. Makes wonder if my number's coming up... As I motored down the freeway in the daily driver, I passed by a number of cars as they squeezed into free flowing traffic from the on ramp, and took notice of a flashy Honda. He came on to the freeway behind several cars ahead of him, all of them trying to peel onto the freeway, forcing through traffic into lanes further to the left to accomodate them. Ahead of him was one of those little old ladies that think getting onto the freeway at 25 miles per hour is socially acceptable. I scooted over into the number two lane, and went past them all. The Honda guy at the tail end, I could see, put his foot into it. Banking over some five lanes directly into the fast lane, I followed the guy, from my passenger side mirror, to my rear view mirror, then to my driver's side mirror thinking: "why in hell do I never run into these guys when I'm driving the MR2?" Like that, he was quickly around every one of the cars previously in front of him. Peeking into my left mirror as he approached, then out my driver's side window as he slowly went by, that was a real fine Honda. However, I didn't get much time to think about it. Suddenly, shades of Al Unser Jr and Chip Ganassi at Michigan, the guy violently banked across my front fender, arcing across the lanes toward the right shoulder! He was in some kind of trouble, but: so was I, in that I had absolutely no place to go in my daily driver, a Subaru with 400k miles and a master cylinder that I really should have replaced in 1996. I couldn't go left until I reduced my speed to one lower than his, so... I went with him, across some four lanes or so as we vectored ever closer, me down hard on the brakes. I never looked in the mirrors, but it must have been like pachinko behind me, cars darting everywhere. Initially locking 'm up, I modulated, backing off my violently pulsating petal, I reapplied and got my brakes back, and it was just enough to buy me room to scissor-left. I damned near T-boned him, but he slipped right by; couple feet to spare. As he was heading toward wall, that's when I saw what put him there... his front left suspension collapsed (!). The tyre occupied the extreme upper right quadrant of the wheel whel as he then careened off onto the shoulder, colliding mildly into the wall. I've heard of two other Honda guys with trick suspensions who similarly got into trouble this year. As I got to work and booted up my GUSx software, I pondered at how delicate those FWD suspensions are, how today's engineers ask the front tyres to do too much, and I wondered whether some percentage of the aftermarket parts Honda guys are buying these days might not be as roadworthy, or as well engineered as they think are. With all the aftermarket parts available for Hondas, I'm wondering if a scant few aftermarket firms are cutting corners to attain a cost advantage. But then, who knows: Maybe the guy just sheared his lugs. One thing for sure, though: I'll look alive everytime I see a lowered front driver. I don't know if I trust those guys anymore. Guys who clip their OEM springs tend to porpoise. But, not that Honda. It looked as solid as a rock, right up until I almost bought the farm. I don't know how whatever it was in my blindspot today missed me. Tough luck this month: The waterbed popped. 300 odd gallons... And, I've been hopeful that whoever broke into the Subaru Tuesday is kind enough to at least return my drivers license, my social security card, and my school ID. Today, yet another test behind the wheel? Too many close calls this year. -Sammy Joseph , '88 4AGZE ____________________________ Alfred SamuelJoseph & Barbara June Joseph 1707 Jenner Street Lancaster, CA 93534 (805) 723 6506 asjoseph@as.net asj6961@csun.edu e n d c o m m u n i q u e ____________________________ ||| ||| ||| ||| ||| ||| ||| ||| ||| ||| ||| ||| ||| ||| ____________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Nov 1998 02:48:08 PST From: "Gordon Tyrrell" Subject: Re: MR2 UK Petrol Prices You lucky bastard. 20pounds for 250miles of driving???? The HKS filter, when properly cleaned and reoiled works very well. I find no sand, dirt or such in my intake after the filter. It is quite a simple proceedure to clean the HKS filter. I purchased two of the filter elements, and alternate them. This method, with two filter elements, has worked for over 5 years now, and the filter elements are still in very good shape. I currently use Griot's Garage Penetrating Lubricant spray which is a very sticky oil, to reoil the filters, and since it is in a spray can, it makes it very easy to apply. I also use Kano Labs (www.kanolabs.com) Floway to clean the filters. Floway works very good and very fast, and easily rinses out with water. Sorry to hear that you had a difficult time with the HKS. And I have driven MR2's with the K&N filter and mine of course with the HKS, and I would not say that the HKS is any louder than the K&N. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Nov 1998 14:26:25 -0000 From: Mark Nias Subject: MR2 MK2: Gearbox question I have a couple of friends who both seem to have a similar problem with their mk2's one is a 94 uk spec GT, and the other is a japanese 92 turbo. they both complain of very hard 1st to 2nd shifts, they are both very low milage, esp. the turbo which is about 30,000 miles. anyone have any suggestions to pass on to them?, or is this problem documented somewhere.. thanks! mark *----------------------------------------------------------* | Mark Nias - markn@jsb.co.uk - PGP KeyID: 0x4BF05DF5 | *----------------------------------------------------------* | http://www.mr2.net http://www.multivac.net | | markn@mr2.net markn@multivac.net | *----------------------------------------------------------* | 1988 Toyota MR2 (Supercharged) - IMOC: 1SC000006 | | Automatic/Power Windows+Locks+Mirrors/Air-Con/T-Bar | *----------------------------------------------------------* ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Nov 1998 13:52:08 +0100 From: vassilios.bertakis@zurich.com Subject: Re: MR2 Redline MT-90 and others As I posted before, the possibly best oil you can put into your (usualy) noisy tranny is the CASTROL SAE-XJ which is a 75W-140 and tops the GL-5 standard that is recomended by Toyota for the MR2 and mandatory on LSD equiped cars. I used it and I am more than satisfied. The noise has reduced significant and shifting has improved. The SAE-XJ is not available in USA (due to Castrol USA info) but I am willing to get it for those who are interested. MTL? i realize that MT-90 isn't a GL-5 lube like toyota recommends nor does the Redline bottle claim that it can be used as a GL-5. but isn't it supposed to have some sort of friction modifiers or something that makes synchro's work better? what are the drawbacks or potential nightmares that could occur from using MT-90? it'd be interesting to hear from other Redline tranny fluid users on this list and what experiences they've had..... cheers, ken 91t ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Nov 1998 08:27:17 -0700 From: goodmatt@juno.com (Matt S Ledbetter) Subject: MR2 In Colorado Springs I spotted a nice '93ish Aquamarine Pearl MR2 on Academy Blvd last night.... I've got this also with my Turbo - until the engine is warm the 1st to 2nd shift is quite difficult to make. Once the engine and gearbox oil is warm it shifts quite smoothly. I tried replacing the oil after I got the car for some Castol Synthetic 75W90 I bought from Halfords (4l at 10 GBP a litre!) and it didn't really help.
