(I wasnt very nice to them!!) WOW!! I can't get anywhere near that out of my A032R's. The street driving must help heat-cycle them to the point where they don't wear so much (nor would they be as sticky). I used up my rears after about 4-5 autox events and one Solo 1. (They don't get any street use, so can't comment on that). I actually found the A008RSII's to last a bit longer than the A032R's. I am a big fan of Yokohama tires in general (aside from them sponsoring me) but the high wear rate on the A032R's was one of the complaints that I've fed back to them. Lance. I checked the MR2 site and didn't find too much conerning these issues: 1) Is the K&N FIPK a good choice for an aftermarket intake? I realize it's not "cold air" but anyway... 2) What do you do about the AFM? Does it connect to the top of the new filter apparatus somehow? 3) What "connector" unhooks the AFM from the top of the air filter box? I know NOT to unscrew the screws and disconnect it this way. How do you get it off? 4) Will I get error codes or something with an aftermarket filter? Will I run too lean if this is my only mod? P.S. This list has been extremely helpful to me and thank you all for the advice. Our fog > lights, unless I'm mistaken, are H3's. you might be right there gabe....on the h3 thingy.....been so long since i replaced my fog light bulb.....for a while there i was replacing my fog bulbs and main lights often they kept failing....no problems now......but yes the beam pattern on the euros are more focused in the respect that they have a horizontal "cutoff" ....i would think that this woudl be a plus as not to blind other drivers.....the pattern seems to be more spred out yet shoots further down th eroad.....go figure... terry - ------- As a genuine "european" I can confirm, the beam has a horizontal "cutoff" and has a wide spread. Also the bulbs must be adjusted that way that the left bulb's beam is "shorter" (lower) and spoting to the ride side of the road and the right bulb's beam "longer" (higher) pointing straight. This reduces blinding the other drivers and provides a good lightning of the right street border. Very logical in my eyes. After my wreck Saturday I didn't want to leave the house yesterday, so I spent most of the time on the internet....I'm soo bored. So I thought I'd let you guys know more on the status of my car. The nitrous system is working great. I have the 75hp jets installed right now, however it is VERY rich..at first I thought I'd try leaning out the fuel jet a tiny bit. But more recently I have cranked up the boost a little bit. I was running 14 psi, now I'm running 15.5-16psi. That seemed to fix the over rich condition :-) I have been playing with the home dyno lately too. I dyno'd my friends MR2's as a nice stock baseline. Both cars make about 190hp and 190 lb ft. of torque (at the motor)...not to bad for a pair of 100,000+ mile MR2's. I home dyno'd my car at 14psi and am making about 262 flywheel horsepower. At 16psi that figure climbs to 287hp. I am still running the stock exhaust (empty cats though) so I decided to pull the muffler off and make a dyno run. WOW what a difference. Peak power is now 295 hp..but there is much more area under the curve, the power comes in sooner and stays longer. At some points there is a 20+ hp difference. And for those who say no backpressure is bad for torque..well you are right..under 3200 rpm the stock system does make more power..but 3200 rpm..who stays there for long? So obviously an exhaust upgrade is in the near future for me. I really like the dual tip look, but have heard that dual tip mufflers are inherently more restrictive..so I might engineer a single exit system..or I'm like to make a cheap copy of the Garage Fukui twin muffler twin tip exhaust. So you guys are probably saying "what does the car do on the nitrous?" Well, at 14psi the system adds 75 hp, I saw 340hp at the flywheel and 80ft lbs more torque (340 lb ft. at the flywheel). I expect a little more when I get the bottle pressure up a bit..it was cold out so the bottle pressure was only 800psi..NX recommends 900-1000psi, guess I need to hook up that bottle heater. At 16psi it is near impossible to Home-Dyno the nitrous, 2nd gear runs are simply not possible because of severe traction problems. So I tried a run in 3rd, but had to abort before I got to peak hp because of traffic..but I did get a peak torque of 398 lb ft. The nitrous power figures are through a muffled exhaust expect another 15hp with a better exhaust. My theory on why the nitrous adds more power at higher boost is that it is removing a greater amount of heat from the intake charge and the bottle temp./pressure was a little higher that day. This all sounds great..unfortuantely I am at the limits of 93 octane pump gas. Shortly after making that last nitrous run I popped another knock sensor. I have 2 or 3 solutions in the works for the octane/detonation problems. continued in next e-mail Aaron 91 nitrous'd turbo MR2 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Dec 1998 20:02:34 -0500 From: "Tommy Guttmann" Subject: Re: MR2 Back in the saddle - and onto the ice >stay out of harms way and off the ice! MKII Turbo Stuff 2 1. I am trying a product made by VP Racing called C5. Its an octane additive that is highly recommended to me by some very reliable sources. The only problem is that is has a small amount of lead in it..that will kill a catalytic convertor (no problem for me) and might injure a knock sensor. However, my 2 sources have run C5 on their Nitrous burning late model Z28's for years with no O2 sensor problems..so I have my fingers crossed (and an extra O2 sensor on my parts car). 2. Excessive Motorsports sells a product called Smart Spark. I think it sells for around $300. It has 2 rev limiters (one low end for staging, and one high end for obvious reasons), rpm based nitrous on and off switches, and variable timing retard whenever I arm/activate the nitrous. 3. Anyone got connections with J&S? They make a knock sensing/timing retarding setup that I would love. I don't even know where to get one though :-( Future upgrades: 1. a different type of boost controller. I have found that running 16 psi with my manual boost controller builds boost rather slowly. I am going to try a Redline Pro manual boost controller, instead of just an adjustable orifice, it is a ball and spring assembly that should hold the wastegate fully shut somewhat longer than a regular MBC..allowing boost to build faster. 2. either a Supra in-tank pump or an additional inline pump. I like the EASY install of the additional pump, but am afraid I will flood the engine at idle. I suppose I could remedy that with a better/larger fuel pressure regulator, but that's not ideal to me. 3. 550cc injectors and dual feed fuel rail - I already have the parts, but have not decided how I will run them. I'd naively like to think I could just tighten the spring on the AFM and twist the idle mixture screw a few times? Maybe a Field SFC? 4. intercooler - some might be suprised to see this so low on my list..however the nitrous does a great job of intercooling..it leaves the nozzle at 140 degrees below zero. However, the pressure drop of the stock intercooler is awful. Oh, my RPS clutch did finally smooth out. I really like it, it is very easy to modulate and launch the car. It seems to hold great. The FIPK comes with an adapter that bolts to the end of the AFM. Onto this goes the filter.
