At what temp would the fans cut in? And how can I test if they're working? Come to think of it I have never heard the fans running yet, but never noticed a high engine temp. Hope you can throw some light on this. Brucef 91T UK ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Oct 1999 04:42:35 EDT From: CSand35874@aol.com Subject: mr2 MKII buying advice My name is Chris Sanders, and I've been thinking about buying a 91 or newer Turbo MR2 for quite some time. I've already jumped around on the MR2 webring quite a bit, but there are a few questions I still have. The MR2 I'm currently interested in is a 91 that has >140k miles. I'm not too worried about the miles since the asking price is under $4,000, and if I do get it, I plan on going pretty crazy with it (i.e., find a spare short block to rebuild, do my own portwork, aftermarket turbo, custom air/water intercooler and piping, etc.) I was wondering if there are any things to look for while checking out the car other than normal check outs. I already know to check the cooling system and make sure the tranny doesn't pop out of 5th, but is there anything else I should check? I know the MKI's had a lot of problems with rust. Is this also a problem with the MKII's, and if so what are the usual problem areas? Any other advice would also be appreciated. Also, what is the limiting factor for performance with these cars? I'm currently driving an AWD Talon TSI, and we have major tranny reliability problems. Generally what is the major breaking part, and at what horsepower level does this occur? FYI, the car will be a daily driver when I'm done rebuilding it, and will mostly be drag raced with a few autocrosses thrown in occasionally. Also, a good friend of mine is a Toyota technician, so I won't be doing all of this alone. Actually if anyone in the Dallas/Ft Worth area needs to get some work done to their car, he's usually willing to do side work to make some spare cash for modding his car, and he'll let you look on/help to learn more about how the cars work, and how to fix things yourself later on. Thanks in advance for any advice, Chris Sanders 1993 TSI AWD Skeletor on IRC ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Oct 1999 01:48:16 PDT From: "Dave Chang" Subject: Re: mr2 MR2 Exhaust Systems Pete, Doesn't the Greddy PE system have 70mm piping that goes into dual 70mm pipes? That is what I fell into. =( If possible, take out the hose that lead to the impeller wheel of the turbo and spin the wheel with your finger(off course, the car has to be cool down for at least a few hours before you can do this), the wheel should spin freely, and without resistance or scratching sound. Move the wheel up and down and sideway to see if there is any movement, excessive movement (scratching the housing) indicates bad turbo. - --- Martin Fields wrote: > Hey all - > > Within the next month I am buying an Mr-2 Turbo(91+). I have talked on it while on roads where you dont have to tend to shifting, etc, but if I am ever in traffic I will tell the callers that I will call them back or they can call back in a while. If you look at the performance page you can see how far forward the engine really is- there's no mistake it is a mid-ship. Also only manual transmission is being made available now, the 6 speed will come later I guess. Also locks on the fuel cap lever and boot/trunk opener, good idea. That's all for now. HOPEFULLY get to see the real thing tomorrow. Have a look at this link... this is the link for all the options and variations for the MR-S. You want different colours all over the inside of the car- you got it! To best see this site you'll need the FLASH plugin. There's even a page with the TRD options on it. http://www.toyota.co.jp/dop-mrs/index.html Toyota seems to be doing this with many of it's new cars over here- I think they want people to be able to 'personalize' their car more. Some of the stuff on these pages is Ok, but some... The DVD navigation in increasingly common over here as are the CD/MD/Tape players. One thing I noticed on the first page, have a look at the badge- Look like a MkI or what?
