I was wondering how to drain the following liquids from the Mk1. The brake fluid, clutch fluid or tranny fluid whatever it is called, and the gas tank. This is all we have left to drain before we drop the motor on the Blue Bird. My friend has the BGB over at his house so I can't look in there. Autocrossed with Jack Kramer yesterday.....I'm hooked!!! Found out several interesting things: 1) Vipers are REALLY awesome. A guy came in after we'd all had 3 or 4 runs. He missed a gate on his first run because he hadn't had a chance to walkdown the course. After that he got faster and faster and FASTER. He had the ftd by his last run. 43.36 something. That car flies. (pretty too!) 2) I know nothing! My first autox....boy do I have some learning to do! :) We ran in a school parking lot with a lot of sand and small gravel on the course. I never spun, but wasted WAY too much time on boost spinning my tires. If I could ever have convinced myself to let off some I'm sure my times would have been better. At least my time went down every run. My car understeered like a pig. (Think maybe I need better tires than generic aquatreads in front and D60-A2s in the back??!!?) :) :) Wheeeeee! 3) A slower car with better tires can go faster! Jack and I traded cars for a fun run. I had my fastest time of the day in his NA. (47.7) He ran a 46.7 in my car. Obviously I didn't drive my car to its best. But I will be at the next event for sure. (with some better tires too!) I learned ALOT in 5 runs.....but...I WANT MORE RUNS!!!! 4) I got my buddy Steve to go with his 96 Vette. He had brand new R1s on his car. His last run was a blistering 43.8. First time he ever autoxed that car. It was a fairly tight course but he ran well. He showed me a line around a tricky cone that helped me when I drove Jack's car. Practice, observe, practice, observe!!! 5) Any car, when well driven is competitive. An 87 CRX was 4th fastest. An old Celica was quick too. Heck, even a couple Mustangs had respectable times. Anyone that hasn't run.....DO IT!!! Joel C (Still hyper from the experience!) 92T (PS I got a trophy.....only A stock car there. Not real meaningful, but a cool paper weight for my desk!) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Mar 98 12:16:00 est From: "Simonsen, Micah (PS)" Subject: MR2 Water pump Hello everyone, I've been reading the list for quite a while, but I just recently acquired an MR2. It's an 86 NA, black, 130k miles. It was advertised for $750 obo, so I drove two hours to check it out. Interior was good, no options except sunroof, good stereo, power mirrors. Exterior good except bondo on B pillar at roofline, and surface rust on back left wheel well. Mechanically sound except a rattle, and a high & bouncing idle. Thanks to the list I knew what the bouncing idle was, compression checked out fine and it stays in fifth gear fine so I bought it for $450. Anyway, the rattle was coming from the water pump pulley. I could see it wobbling off axis. Cleared up above about 4000 rpm, probably just centrifugal force pulling it into line. Well a couple days ago I was just coming into downtown and the pulley seized. I parked it to let it cool, then drove home with no belt. Luckily it was only a couple miles. I had put 1000 miles on the car since I bought it with no trouble, but I had just done a 110 mph run so that could be part of it :) I have a few questions. How much does a water pump usually run? How much labor does this involve, the engine needs to be dropped right? I was thinking about going to a new place in town that only charges $25 an hour, are there any caveats to this, like something that could be really messed up by someone who doesn't know 2's? Also, I've only been getting 24 mpg, city or highway. I can smell unburned gas in the exhaust like it's running real rich. This could be a lot of things but are there any that are real commonplace on 2's? Thanks in advance for the advice, mbs ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Mar 1998 12:20:59 -0500 From: "Joel A. Oddly enough, they only leak when the car is moving forwards at greater than 50mph. The car can sit all day in pouring rain and be dry inside. However, it can lightly drizzle for about 2 minutes and I go driving and water starts dripping in from the outside front corner of the passenger side. Oh well, I almost never have a passenger anyway... It's pretty straightforward, so I'd worry more about general mechanical ability more than MR2-specific knowledge. Gas mileage is relative to alot of things (YMMV), and mine is'nt much different, but driving style has alot to do with that. As far as the rich condition, check the obvious tune up stuff, and you may want to consider replacing the O2 sensor, if it has'nt been done before. > > > Thanks in advance for the advice, > mbs Ron87MR2 86MR2 partspile ICQ: 3087083 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Mar 1998 15:05:33 -0500 (EST) From: Edmund Tan Puay Choon Subject: MR2 MKII: no sound from front speaker Hi, hope you guys could give me your advice. In Seattle, they were consistently 1-2 seconds faster than all the turbos, and that's generally the case on short, twisty courses. Sounds as if you're suffering from the 'usual' driver's door wiring harness problem. There's probably a clipped wire somewhere in the door. The choice is to fix the clipped wire, but I seem to remember someone even replacing the entire door wiring harness. What happens if it's adjusted too hard? >> Thats the usual consequence when you have it set up to vent to the atmosphere...thats the reason that a lot of 2nd gen DSM people replace the stock plastic BOV with a 1st gen (metal) BOV because it has the return hose connected to the intake...since you already bought the BOV...just deal with it/turn up your idle speed. dan ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Mar 1998 17:39:49 -0500 From: ssherman@scci.net (Susie Sherman) Subject: re: Orlando area MR2 sightings >From: "John Peacock" >If you guys are out there I am interested in a local club type thing or at >the very least a small get together. I'm over in Melbourne, but I currently don't own an MR2. :( Email me privately about other owners that may be able to help start a group. I sold my '85 a couple of years ago when it began to rust out and when I wasn't able to find an '89SC within six months, I bought something else. Now, the lust is back and I'm looking to buy another. Along that thread, I would appreciate any assistance in locating Paul Stewart of Cocoa Beach, FL who has an '89SC listed as being for sale on the SC Registry website. There is no email or phone number listed and I'd like to find out if the car is still for sale or any additional info. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks!
