Advanced Driver's Group Track Day at Shannonville

---

Hi Geoff,

Just wondering if you could maybe put up this recent post of mine to the digest
somewhere in the Upcoming Events along with a couple of the "pics from previous
Shannonville Events"

There's a Track Day being held at Shannonville on Friday, Sept.18, hosted
by "Advanced Driver's Group" on the 2.47km "Pro" configuration which is
the one that is used for the Enduroseries.

See: http://www.na-motorsports.com/Tracks/Shannonville.html
for detailed info on SMP, track map(s) where it's located, lodging, etc...
Here's part of the Blurb:

> ========================================
> For those of you who have not attended an Advanced Driver Group
> event, the following will give you a brief synopsis.
>
> We have been running Advanced Driver Improvement Days at Shann-
> onville since 1992. Shannonville is our only venue to date due to
> the fact that it is both technically challenging ( Jacques Ville-
> neuve chose it over Tremblant to perfect his racing skills ) and
> safe.
> Participation at our events is by invitation only. Invitation
> is extended to people who have been recommended by either members
> of our group, driving school instructors, or sports car club ex-
> ecutives. Criteria for invitation is some form of prior perform-
> ance driving instruction, and/or extensive track experience.
> The Advanced Driver Group is not a performance driving school,
> nor is it a place for track neophytes (although we do usually have
> one or more instructors at our events and we do, on occasion, in-
> vite novices). The main purpose of the Advanced Driver Group is to
> provide drivers, who already know the basics of high speed track
> driving, unlimited seat time in order that they might both improve
> their driving skills and fully enjoy their sport. To this end, at
> our Advanced Driver Improvement Days, we run an open track the full
> day, with no groups. Lapping starts at 9:00 a.m. and finishes at
> 5:00 p.m. with no down time. Each driver is free to come and go on
> the track at his or her leisure.
> Unlike traditional motor sport club events, Advance Driver Im-
> provement Days are completely non-competitive. Passing is allowed
> only in specified areas and only when signalled by the person being
> passed. Cars must follow at a safe distance, no dicing is allowed,
> and no timing is done. Each driver drives at his/her comfort level.
> Because there is no pressure to compete, drivers push themselves
> and their cars only as long as is safe and enjoyable. For this rea-
> son, this type of event is usually less stressful on both driver
> and vehicle than either slalom or time trials.
> We encourage all group members to participate as both drivers and
> passengers in order that they might observe different driving tech-
> niques, sample the feel of different cars ( vehicle variety tends to
> be very interesting ), and generally enhance their total event exper-
> ience. Group participants have no flagging or corner-worker oblig-
> ations.

Again, this is an "open lapping" type event...meaning you go out when you
want, for as long as you want, as often as you want (no run groups).
= Lots of Track Time!

SMP is great place, with safe run off areas and is ideally suited for our MR2s
mostly 3rd gear stuff with a couple 2nd gear hairpins. These events allow LOTS
of track time and are just about the most fun I've had on track.

Very laid back and SMP is a very safe, but technically challenging circuit.
SMP is located about 1-1/2 to 2 hours east of Toronto, or 3 hours west of Montreal.

From the US, it's up I-81, past Syracuse, cross the Thousand Islands Bridge to
Canada and west on #401 for about an hour.

Last year, we had 8 MR2s show up. Last May, there were another 8. I sure
would like to see more this time...and maybe meet some people I've only
corresponded with...

Contact Greg Connolly at connolly@magma.ca for registration info.

Cost is CDN$175 (till Aug.21), CDN$200 (till Sept.17) or CDN$250 (at the gate
depending on space/availability). Enrollment is limited!

(if you're from the US, multiply by approx. x 67% for exchange rate and see
your discounted cost!)

Normally I make it a "one day" trip, but if any of you decide to come from afar
I'd stay the night of the 18th in Belleville or Kingston nearby to Bench Race over
a few brewskies...maybe make it a mini-MR2 meet for Saturday, the 19th...
(Kingston Club any ideas?)

PS Last time, besides all our 2s, 3 Type Rs, a Viper GTS, a smattering of F355
Challenge Ferrari's (practicing) and several other interesting cars showed up.
Fun to watch/compare...
