Just to say my AW11 T-Bar has now done 103,000 faultless miles and
still gives me great enjoyment.
I'm interested in finding out the degree of Lotus involvement with
the MR2 AW11. According to Lotus faq it is their M90/X100 prototype

I have a 1991 Toyota MR2 (Red) and live in the Lynchburg, Virginia area. Interested in correspondance with others in the area. Also wondering about common mechanical problems I should be looking out for with my car since it is high milage (105,000 miles).

Just want to say thanks for creating a great website "not just a website but a great Tool." I'm proud owner of a 93 turbo MR2 and this site has had the best tips to offer. {?To you turbo owners? Just strung an oil drip and I can't find it. "Not coming from Turbo" Seems to be originating from under the headers and can't see a thing. Any Thought's from anybody would be greatly welcome.

MAINTENENCE ADVISORY: - All TurboCharged and SuperCharged MR2s: Battery / Intercooler Mount. CASE: This unit is HEAVILY rubberized. It will trap water between its thick rubberized coating and its metal substrate after it inevitably cracks. Worse, this rubberized coating conceals rust between it and its substrate. I almost missed it myself. When washing turbocharged or supercharged MR2s, water trickles through the "cheese-grader", down through the weep holes in the intercooler, through to the rearward side of the battery just under the intercooler, where it finally penetrates the minute cracks indicative of an aged Battery / Intercooler mount. The rust may not be visable under this heavy rubberized coating, but it will likely be substantial. A tell-tale sign is to remove then inspect each of the threads of the bolts that secure the intercooler to this mount. If rust or acid is present upon these threads, then you could have problems, and you need to replace the mount, AND THE FOUR INTERCOOLER BOLTS. What's worse is when the intercooler is removed by a mechanic. What then are the odds that these bolts will find their way back into the holes they came out?! Hence, the rusted intercooler bolts have a probability of infecting the intercooler mounts on the other side of the intercooler (!), threatening to rust your pride and joy from the very midpoint of its being. The replacement part only costs 12 bux at Toyota. Sammy Joseph: Friend of Man - endcommunique

92 Turbo Owner. Modifications: VDO "A" pillar mounted -30 to 15+ boost gauge, manual boost controller adjusted just under the fuel cut-off, K & N open air filter, and HKS exhaust. Mobile One w/toyota filters every 2,000, and relatively aggressive preventive maintanence program. This has been an outstanding car. I was looking at higher performance modifications, but strongly desire to maintain the awesome bumper to bumper integrity of the original design. Any proven suggestions on suspension upgrades that will DEFINANTELY improve the original design while maintaining perfect tracking as a daily driver?

Very happy owner of a completely original '91 white, non-turbo (33,000 miles). Couldn't think of a more enjoyable, affordable, reliable and fun way to spend a summer day than to cruise around with the t-tops out. Life in a MR2 is good.

My brother and I both own 1986 MR2's. Damn fine automobile.
If anyone has any information of the settings/specs for the air/fuel mix sensor, we need your help. The screw that is presently in place was sealed originally by the factory, but appears to have been drilled out and adjusted. If anyone has info on how to readjust or set this screw, please fill us in. The car is running a little lame. Thanks.

I had a real bitch of a time trying to find engine parts for my MR2
in eastern Canada. But I did finally find an engine in Ontario.
I had great help trying to find engine parts while I was in Norfolk, VA, there is a fantastic parts place there that specializes in imports.

I purchased a 1988 Supercharged MR2 about 3 weeks ago. I love the car, not the wind noise from the T-Tops, but the car is great. It has a few small problems though. First is the shaking over 55 m.p.h., second is a problem that occurs occasionally when I accelerate, it likes to bog down sometimes. The performance is awesome most of the time though. I have a question. There is a button on the right side under my steering wheel that is labeled "Fuel", depressed it is in "Reg" and when it is released it is "Premium". I am sure it has something to do with the grade of fuel I run, but thought I'd check with others. Thanks.

Love the site! Love my MR2! I have a red '93 n/a. The other day I was
driving to work when a patrolman stopped me because he thought I had been racing someone else. I told him it wasn't me and that i had just left the house. He didn't believe me and he decided to feel the front trunk cover to see if I was telling the truth. He thought the engine was in front and that the cover would be hot. It was stone cold so he let me go. Stupid cop.

For those of you who don't yet have an MR2, but are contemplating one, I wholeheartedly recommend the Mk1. I've never driven or even ridden in a Mk2, and I know it must be more refined and faster (turbo, particularly), but they're also father pricy when in good shape.
I finally bit on a supercharged '89 last summer, and it is a BLAST. It's probably had a hard life, and I've had to put a few $$$ in it, but it's just fine now. It's totally dependable, even economical, and goes better than any 1.6 liter I'LL ever drive. Geared very low, it turns just under 3,000 RPM at 60 mph in fifth. I'm no engineer, but I'm told that the benefit of supercharging is TORQUE. which certainly seems true. I still find myself trying to shift to "6th," occasionally, since 5th is so responsive, even at slower speeds.
A friend with an '85 tells me that '85 was the only year with a rear sway bar, but, with minor revisions, that bar will fit on any Mk1. He says the sway bar, correct gas shocks, and tires give the Mk1 unsurpassed handling. Anyone else out there tried that?
With a supercharged model, you get a two-seat, midengined car with a supercharged, intercooled, 7500RPM engine, disc brakes all around, etc., etc. etc. Hell, it's practically a street-legal race car! And the insurance isn't even too bad! Get one today, folks! You'll love it.

I have an 86' MK I with over 185,000 miles. I've only had it since December (w/179,000 mi.) and had no problems until just recently. First was the clutch fluid reservoir leaking...I thought I read somewhere that it was only like five bucks to fix this, but I don't know what "it" is that needs fixing. Next was a really obnoxious squealing coming from the alternator area...usually accompanied by the "cooling fan", "brake", and "charge" lights all coming on. I used A LOT of penetrating oil sprayed on the alternator housing and pulley, which helped a bit. The squeak would dissipate if I revved the engine near 5,500 RPM, but if it fell back to idle it would re-appear. It was more evident when there was a significant power drain (i.e. trying to roll up windows [power windows] when they're already all the way up, or headlights) That's why I assumed it was the alternator. Well just this last week I started having a cooling system problem. The water/coolant mixture would completely drain itself. It appeared to be leaking from the water pump. So I replaced it. That helped for about 50 miles. Then it would overheat again. So I've been carrying aruond a couple gallons of water, and filling often.
Another thing. I read on the inside of the engine hood, that there is a "correct procedure" for filling the cooling system. I found a valve on the radiator (in the front, on the top, right) and would open it to bleed the air out... I don't have an owner's manual or a repair book....so I'm comletely lost trying to fix this....Please help.

Hi all. Hello to everyone on IRC I haven't talked to in awhile. I am in China right now. Anyways I just got a new Alpine head unit and sound-deadened the doors (dynamat, err actually scoshe accumat or something like that) And the sound is *MUCH* improved. I haven't even gotten new speakers yet. Anyways anyone looking for decent sound I highly recommend sound deadening. I did both the inside and outside skins. I never thought my stock speakers could sound so decent!

I owned a 1991 MR2 Turbo. Someone hit me and demolished the car. That car was my baby! I will never be satisfied until I own another MR2 Turbo between the years of 1991 and 1995! I looked for another one with the 13,000 their insurance paid me but they are way too rare and no one wants to sell them! I bought a 1992 Honda Prelude. It is a great looking car but beside it's looks, and cannot compare in any way with the MR2! Can anyone give me any suggestions?

I just bought a red 1985 MR2 for $550.00 and it runs like a beauty, it has rust on the rear wheel panels, and is missing the side ground effects. The front spoiler is bent upwards there is one other thing that is the front wheel panel has a huge dent in it, I love my car and I am only 16, but I think I'll own it for a long time. Love the Site, Thanx to all.

If you're an MR2 owner in the Portland area, Beaverton Toyota is an honest, efficient place to get your MR2 repaired. For a great aftermarket clutch in the Portland area, contact Pete at All Transmission(also in Beaverton. Hey all, wondering if anyone knows what other size tires I can fit on
my '93 mr2? Can I go with 205 50's up front? Will that work as good or better and not look stupid etc? It's kinda difficult to get the exact tire size with some brands. Also wondering if anyone knows what the tread life is on the Yoko A032R's? I want some good performance tires and I don't wanna pay for new rims yet.. Well any info is appreciated. Thanx! I finally purchased another mr2. I had a 91 naturally aspirated, white, mr2, but traded it in for my pride and joy, a black 91 turbo... it was stolen and totaled. Now, two and a half years later, i purchased a dark blue 91 turbo.
The problem is, as you all know, lots of good upgrades were made in the years to follow. Suspension, brakes, differential, throttle, etc.
I tried to hold out for a newer model, but this ninety-one was soooo cherry, i bought it anyway. not to say its a slouch by any means.
My question, to anyone in the know, is, is it possible to directly bolt on factory replacements, say from a 93, or 94 car? does the suspension/car configuration allow you to change the brakes, calipers, rotors, lines, and geometry of the 91? I'd like to heavily modify my vehicle, and i know all i need to about aftermarket stuff, im only concerned with factory stuff. Please help if you've experienced this, or know someone who's successfully done this swap.

My 1987 MR2 has just been taken to the shop for its 60,000 mile enema. (It has 72,000 miles)
I was disappointed to notice so many oil leaks when it was raised on
the lift. (I had noticed the small spots in my garage). It seems there
are several places that are weak: The o-ring near the distributor, the
oil filter housing o-ring, the valve cover gaskets, etc. Am I getting
ripped off or what? Don't tell me yes, because I told them to fix everything!
I still love the car!

Greetings MR2 lovers. I have a 1986 MR2 painted in 93 Toyota Celica Yellow, with 15" - 5 spoke polished rims, a F-40 style spoiler on the back, a set of yellow fog lamps on the front, an HKS complete / custom intake (custom made in conjunction of myself and John at WWW.MODACAR.COM, located in California) filter that replaces the old air filter box, a MOMO steering wheel & shifter know, short throw manual shifter, custom built set of rear-mounted speakers for back-sound, and finally a custom built wider exhaust system that runs from the exhaust manifold all the way through the catilic converter and then through a custom muffler similar to cherry bombs. The car has currently 262,000-Km and runs much better than ever before. My future plans is to increase stopping power with either a double piston calipers (if available or if I can find any compatible system) or cross-drilled rotors that I know are available, and maybe if possible I would like to see if the a SuperCharged engine would pop in the 1600 cc stock engine's place for that extra horsepower.
Problems that I've had were the rusting of the rear whells and the rotted floor boards due to the salt up here in Canada. Also I've had to replace the starter, the timming belt, and give the alternator a new rebuilt replacement for it. Mufflers don't count :) HOPEFULLY I'll get a picture of my car scanned soon enough and I'll post it up here so I can show of my One-Of-A-Kind :) ... like to think of it that way. Send me E-Mail if you want to discuss future plans or tips, etc...

I have a 91 MR2 turbo and I was wondering if anyone has ever tried a manual boost control valve (twist type) to crank up the boost. I've already installed a Jacobs Electronics Omni Magnum and a K&N filtercharger. Any comments would be welcome.

I have been looking for a model of the original 1985 MR2 but have had no luck in finding one. I own an 88 orange pearl Mr2 with T-bar roof etc.,etc. and would like to have a miniature sitting on my computer while working. If anyone has any information on this, please contact me. Thanks, Ron

I've owned my 86' MR2 for over 1 year now and I love it more than any car I've ever owned. I have every option including the complete spoiler and ground effects package....but it is a stick of course. I work on the car at least once a week, tweaking it and making it run as sweet as it can.....which is pretty sweet I might add. If anyone has any tips for me or knows of any good sources of parts and accessories...especially performance parts, please let me know.

I like the new body style of the mr2 better than the older body style.
I'm thinking about maybe buying a mr2 or a 84 model porche 944. What
do you think about the porche ? How did they have room to put the
engine in the back of the mr2. e-mail me some time.
