One of the best resource oriented & useful web sites sites I've found and heavily influenced my decision to buy a MR2 turbo. I was looking at a RX7 but I could only find a RX7 lemons web site for it & it changed my opinion. Also I found my MR2 in your MR2 classifieds!

Awesome site ... glad I found it! Have been the very proud owner of my red '86 for a year and a half now. I inherited mine from my dearly beloved grandmother. Yes, that's right - my Grandmother! (She lost her license due to speeding tickets!)It had over 130,000 miles before the speedometer broke last year, probably about 150,000 now. I need to replace the muffler, that's about it. Fortunately, I've found a great mechanic who takes very good care of her! This car handles like a dream - lots of power, hugs the road, it's a real blast to drive. Would enjoy hearing from other owners, so I can "brag on my baby "Skeeter."

I was sitting on a bus five years ago when I first spied a gorgeous red MR2 sitting on a driveway. I fell in love at first sight and my goal in life is to get a yellow MR2. I hope they bring it back to Canada and the States. (btw - this is a bit late, but my friend has an Eagle Talon Tsi and I never see it because it's always in the shop)

Just had to get on the new guest book. July was burdened with too many MR2 bashers! Be Gone! Good riddin's
CORY: I "spoke" with Geoff, and he said he was strongly considering putting a Petition on this site. I think he gets enough traffic here to actually make an impact! I hope Toyota even notices us. Doubt it. Someone wrote, last month, that toyota's decision to stop production was powered by the sport-ut market domination. They left the Supra for us, and the MR2 is becoming a collectable everyday, but I still have a hankering to buy a NEW MR2! That MRJ seems like a concept car only, with the gimmicks they put in it! 2+1/2+1/2 seating! I would help a petition in anyway I could!!!! comments??

To UK readers.
Get onto Jap importers here in Ireland for a Jap Spec 220bhp (standard jap spec)Turbo for the same money you're paying for GT in England. It's worth it. Jap car mag claims 0-100kmh 5.8secs & 153mph (with the limiter removed. (and it feels every bit of it). Haven't found anything on the roads here to keep up with me. Loads of importers here.

I have had my MR2 for about six months. It is an '86, has 90,000 miles on it and it runs great. I let a friend drive it on trip to the coast recently and now he is out looking for a '91. My friend has spent a lot of time looking at the web site picking tidbits of info about the MR2. This site is a wonderful source of information. Great work folks!

I have an 86 that I need some help with. I have an oil useage problem. I changed to Castrol 20-50 because of the temp in the area, I admit to over filling a little and now I am using about a quart every 800 miles where I didn't used about a quart between oil changes before. There is no smoke out the tail pipe and no oil in the air cleaner. No oil in the water and no leaks. I am at a loss as to where it's going. It still gets 35mpg and runs great. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a '93 MR-2 Turbo which I just love. I bought it about a year ago to replace my mint conditioned '86 MR-2. I wish I could have kept both cars, but the insurance cost was just too high ;-(. Anyway, has anyone replaced the stock front tires (195/55-R15) with 215/50-R15 sized tires? The overall diameter should be almost identical. If so, what was the effect on handling and tire wear? I'm sure there would be more grip, but did the car become more darty on the highway? Did the tires wear evenly?

Love my car - just wish it had a little rear seat.

Subj: Free 4AGE Header
Ref: Smog Compliance Study
Spfc: 4AGE 1989 MR2 Only
Cntct: Jomar or Joji
Tph: (213) 755-1177
Dear IMOC,
Please forward the following to all MK I MR2 Owners:
**************************************************
Dear fellow MK I Owners,
It a free "SMOG LEGAL" TRD header to the first person who meets the following criteria:
They want:
1. ... a non-supercharged,
2. ...1989,
3. ... MR2,
4. ... in as close to original condition as possible, and
5. ... one from one of Southern California's MSAs (Metropolitan Statistical Areas).
It's a first class Toyota operation. The installation will be performed by TRD personnel. The lucky individual selected will be given a rental car for the two to three days in which TRD will conduct the study, installing the header, and running analysis on the ability of the 4AGE to comply with anti-smog regulations with the addition of this manifold. Hence, it looks as though the lucky dog who is selected to receive the free header will boast the added distinction of possessing the very first smog legal MR2 header, in addition to having a rental car to thrash about in, for a couple days...
The study will take a little time, and I'm not sure what Toyota intends to do insofar as the type of rental car (it's safe to say that it ain't gonna be a C5 Corvette), pick-up and delivery of the vehicle, or the amount of OTR or laboratory mileage that the selected sample will incur, so although the individual selected might have missgivings, the individual should ask some run of the mill questions:
1. How many miles will my car incur during the study? (x < 100 miles, I suspect)
2. Will my ignition timing be altered; parts replaced? (not likely)
3. Will my car be red-lined excessively? (not likely)
4. Who will do the wrenching? (I'm told that TRD themselves will perform the install)
5. Will I have to surrender my old exhaust manifold in exchange for the new one? (doesn't much matter)
6. Will any other enhancements be made to my car unbeknownst to myself. (stupid question, but I'm throwing it out there "just for the taste of it".)
7. Will I receive the results of the study. (... only I would ask a question like that)
I'm highly confident there's nothing to fear. These guys are professionals, and they know what their doing; they possess impecable credentials. If there's anyone who you would want to take your car to, it's these guys. I think that this is a terrific, generous, and genuine offer... a very nice thing to do for some lucky IMOC enthusiast, so if you have an 89 MR2, step right up and get your free... smog legal TRD Header, and bask in the sun knowing that you will have a car that possesses the honor of being the first smog legal header equiped MR2.
You Luck Dog (!), whoever you are!
Call Jomar or Joji (pronounced "Joe - Gee") at Toy Sport:
(213) 755-1177.
Best,
Sammy Joseph

WOW! I really want an MR2! I currently have a 1990 CRX, but it just doesn't have enough power or looks for me. Seeing this page and others turned me from wanting a weasely little prelude to an MR2 Turbo. Too bad I am so poor though...

Bought my 86 MR2 for $1,000. Loved its handling and decided to start
autocrossing it. The MR2 is a great autocrosser!! I won my first 3
races and later found out I had blown front struts and no rear brakes.
I replaced these with Tokiko adjustables and stock rear brake and calibers.
The car has 120,000 miles and minor problems. Previous owners lack of
care, but the car runs great. I'm looking for any information on suspesion
setup for autocrossing and would like to hear from others racing the MR2.

I've got a normally aspirated '86 MR2. Its gray w/ 16" Konig Tuner wheels. I highly recommend the Tuners for MK 1's because I believe the style was customized for them. I also have 205-40/16 Nitto 450 tires for my long trips from Orlando to Tallahassee. These V-rated tires are killer, the grip, the handling- its the best. One more thing, K&N filterchargers make a huge difference in the performance of my car.

Just wanted to thank this site again for helping fix shimmy in front end
I got 4 new wheels and when the gas station put them on my car they didn't
use a torque wrench so all the lugs were uneven and too tite. I re-torqued
them with a torque wrench and the problem was solved. This web site is a
great tool. Thanks for saving me a big headache and whatever repair costs
I saved.

Still waiting to hear from anyone in the Cincinnati area who is interested in starting up a club, or organizing a rally or something. This area is crawling with I's & II's and there are some great windy river valley roads just wasting away for lack of serious use. Comments??

To Rick and Craig--- if you hate MR2s so much, why were you here, at the Toyota MR2 web site??? I've said this before, (and I didn't expect to say it again so soon)- putting down MR2s and their drivers/owners on a site dedicated to the Toyota MR2 shows you are either (1) asking to be publicly flamed or (2) just plain ignorant. Obviously MOST of the people who visit this site do so for one reason-- they love the car it is dedicated to. If you think we're going to let the opinion of petty bad-mouthers like you change our minds, you're not very intelligent. Power to the MR2 drivers :)

Owner of a '91 MR2 Turbo ENGINE...slipped this beauty into my Mom's '89 Toyota Corona (a couple hundred pounds lighter than MR2 MkII and 4-doors & trunk) here in Barbados. Had to use the '89 Camry V6 5-speed box to hook it to the front wheels. This is the best fun I've ever had driving...full blown, quasi-controllable, torque steering SPEED. Need help with a brake upgrade kit...presently using steel braided lines, DOT4 fluid, cross-drilled rotors for MkI MR2 up front and standard drums at rear. Want 11.5" and larger rotors and calipers, etc. for the front but want to keep the drums at rear (need them for hand brake turns/donuts), just upgrade (bigger drums, better material on shoes). Also, would like LSD for the MR2 MKII. Engine upgrades later...can not sensibly use the extra power at the moment.

I recently bought a 91 non-turbo and am generally happy with the vehicle. Seems I made a mistake tho in not buying a turbo. All the turbos I looked at, seemed pretty thrashed. Is there a retrofit turbo available for the 2.2 stock engine? I will be having some work done on the engine this winter and if practical (as if there's anything about these cars that's practical!), I would like to look into this.
Thanks

Rick...Craig...whoever,look at the facts. Forget Car&Driver,AutoWhaterver, etc. For safety, reliability, power, handling, comfort, visibility, and owner reported problems; in short, for all the things that matter in a car, your first check is with Consumer Reports. Now don't get me wrong, I'm a die hard Chevy fan from way back. But my repect for GM and Ford begins to fade in the 70's, and nearly died in the 80's. Ever heard of the Citation? The fact is, "American" cars died an awful death long ago, with the advent of FWD, and I'll be loyal to anything not made in China. Although the American companies are in the process of resurrecting their ability to design good looking and performing cars. As for the "ethnic" comments, and the poor vocabulary choices, your mother would be ashamed. Go wash out your mouth with soap.

Recently bought a 1986 Mk I from a previous owner. Car is dark (metallic?) green/champagne with 158k km on the odometer, virtually no rust and immaculate inside. I've wanted an MR2 for some time and finally found an excuse to buy one in that I'll be teaching a physical and environmental science course once a week at a small college about 150 km from my home. My other choices were a Porsche 944S and a Mazda RX7. Sofar I've been impressed with the way the car handles. I could do with a new set of tires once of these days and welcome any suggestions any of you may have. Roads are usually dry, even in winter, but temperatures around here range from +35 C in summer to -40C in winter.

I own a '91 MR2 Turbo and an '84 Trans Am, and I can make the unqualified statement that the MR2 is much better overall. The T/A was once owned by my parents and has been babied all of its life. Yet it has more rattles, creaks, groans and LEAKS than my MR2 ever will. This all in spite of the fact that the T/A has lower mileage! I like the way the T/A looks, and the rubber burning torque. But the MR2 looks even better, is faster, handles better, and is much more reliable than the T/A. At 72k miles my MR2 still feels more solid than the T/A when it was bought new. GM's quality cannot compare to Toyta's. We live in a free market society. If the American automobile manufacturers hadn't been challenged by the Japanese to build better, higher quality cars, we would all be condemned to driving American cars with the quality of a Vega or a Chevette. I love America and I WANT to see it build the best cars in the world! American manufactures are getting better, but they still have a ways to go. But, if it hadn't been for foreign competition, we wouldn't see the gains in quality made to date. It's a shame that narrow minded prejudice just cannot acknowledge this simple fact.

To Rick (and that other guy that cannot spell). I have driven a dozen Fieros and just as many MR2's. Both are sporty and fun to drive, but the fiero NEEDS that big V6 just to get the same power out as my normally aspirated 4 cylinder (the 4 cylinder Fiero is an absolute joke!). As for build quality, there can be absolutely no comparison. If you had problems with your MR2, then yours is a rare case, most of them go forever... its not our fault if you bought yours used from some drunkard who cruises on the interstate in second gear and never changes the fluids (or if you yourself cannot take care of a car...) by the way is that Fiero an automatic? By the way...please pick up a vocabulary book so that you can express your anger with more than just one repeating phrase.
Oh yeah, to that guy who is looking for an aftermarket turbo kit for his 5SFE engine... Toymoto in Florida has one for (hold on) $2995. This one is set to 7 PSI and will put you in the 190 HP range (they also have a 12 PSI kit with liquid intercooler for $4495 that will give you a healthy 250 HP, I think it's the same turbo...the TD-06)

I was just looking around at other turbo cars on the net and noticed that the 3.8 Liter V6 Turbocharged Trans-Am only puts out 250 Hp AT 16.5 POUNDS OF BOOST!!!!! Ha-Ha-Ha. Just think what your little 4 cylinder MR2 would crank out at 16.5 Pounds of Boost! (Hint...its a number above 320)

I've been actively looking for an MR-2 for about 3 weeks. Fortunately, the LA area is the happy hunting ground for these things.
So far I've driven:
a '93 Turbo - fast and gorgeous, but the lag was annoying and the car felt a bit heavy to me.
two '91 NA's - also pretty and actually slightly better handling feel than the Turbo, but only OK acceleration (0-60 in mid 8's)
an '87 and '89 NA - the best hadling of the bunch, but kind of gutless. 0-60 closer to 10 than 9 for 100K mile old cars
an '89 SC - not quite as nimble in tight turns as the NAs, but much faster. 0-60 in about 8 (with a passenger and the A/C on), 70-90 in
4th in 6 seconds (half the NA's time).
So I guess like so many others, I'm hunting for a good SC now.
Wish me luck.
PS My 0-60 measurements are made with a soft 1500-2000 rpm starts and
smooth 6000 rpm shifts, and so are slower than auto mag times, but still a valid comparison.

I know I've been writing a lot lately, sorry. Does anyone out there know of an exhaust manifold for the N/A MkII. Everybody makes one for the MkI. Also, who out there can give me data on the HKS and Greddy exhaust systems for the '93 Normally Aspirated, I want to know if these systems made YOU happy... Can someone get out a bucket and whitewash the graffiti off our wall? And I thought July was exciting (fondest memories of Misty) -- now I can't wait for September! New topic: after visiting the Toyota motor show site highlighting the MRJ (http://www.toyota.co.jp/Motorshow/Booth/mrj-t.html), reading the techno-hype, downloading the video clip... I still don't understand. They lengthened the wheelbase, extended this, shifted that - and made almost sufficient room for a 'rear seat' AND a motorized, tuck-away convertible top, besides making VAST improvements to the engine. Here's my quandry: where the hell did they put the friggin' engine? It's still a mid-engine? It still has a trunk? They need to make further changes to the name, 'cause it sure ain't an MR anything anymore. AND, it still looks more than a little like a Miata (aka bathtub) with major Del Sol tendencies. Please, I really can't figure this out, and can't make a quick trip to Australia to satisfy my curiousity. Explain this to me, in layman's terms - like you're talking to a girl, you know?

HKS Super PowerFlow for 93 NA does NOT fit!
The intake hose changed from a two piece to one piece in '93.
HKS did not offer to rectify this at all. I only spent $200
for a metal pipe and a piece of foam so that it would fit right,
but it looks like I will have to have pieces custom made anyways.
Right now I had to cut the rubber hose down and duct tape the intake
on. I called HKS several times before they even looked up the toyota parts and admitted it wouldn't fit. They just told me to order the 91 toyota intake part and they don't even know if that will fit on the AFM since those too are different from 91-93. Basically I am saying HKS sucks and any info on the 91 part would be appreciated. Thanks!

Come on Jack. Don't fall into the old America is the centre of the universe. Toyota customer care has won the JD Power survey every year for the 3 years since it's inception in the UK. It's top notch here in Ireland too. Just because you may not get the best after sales from your local branch don't paint the rest of the world as the same.

Gordon, thanks your comments, I'm pleased to see that Toyota is number one in the customer treatment stakes in Ireland and Britain, my loacl dealer has always looked after my car well, but that's one guy and his garage, on the other hand, Toyota has stopped the importation of the MR2 in N. America and Canada, in Ireland and Britain you can still get NEW MR2, wait a little longer and you will also be able to buy the MRJ, While over this side of the Atlantic, if we want to buy a new MR2, forget it, lets go shopping for Honda, Mitsubishi, Datsun. Toyota have dropped the MR2 because they say it was not selling well and was too expensive to be made, but they still sell in Europe, so it makes no sense. Why has Toyota not once made any official comments to this site (and look at this site well Gordon, these people who write in are many and as diversified bunch of people you could probably find anywhere). Gordon, I'm not complaining to you, your comments are fair I'm complaining to Toyota.

Be very very nice to the transmission in your MR2. I just destroyed one from racing. Apparently they are manufactured on anouther planet from some exotic space gold. They have to be assembled by a highly trained alien elf that is paid more money than Michael Jordan.
(in other words, They are very expensive to have fixed, I paid less for my Jeep.)

Gordon, Yes, there was a turbo MR2 before 1991 but you will never find one here in the States (Just like nobody is going to go down to a Honda dealer and find a used 1998 MR2). They may exist, but Toyota did not bring them here because as a manufacturer they would have had to crash test and certify them (because it was a new chassis) so I guess we are both right (you mostly), what is not attainable may as well not exist. As for the comment on the 1984 MR2 there technically was none (by model NAME), but my uncle bought his "1985" MR2 in July of 1984 in Chicago and all the quotes I put out were from a car that was BUILT in 1984. I envy you Gordon, if you had the urge (and the cash), you could go out tonight and BUY A BRAND NEW 1997 MR2 and never let anybody else touch it.

I'm thinking of either getting an MR2 or 300ZX. Can someone e-mail me about which one i should get. Of course, everyone out there probably thinks an MR2 would be better, but i just want to know why. Thanks,

I'm living in the city of Indianapolis and I have a '91 turbo MR2- that is now performing beautifuly-62,000 miles on it now. But back in April when I was on a road trip down to Lexington, KY- One of the cooling lines to the radiator broke-(rusted through they told me)- and
left the engine high and dry.-The guys at GREEN TOYOTA in LX told me they had never seen this before. I had to wait two days to get a new pipe-via UPS-(not on strike.)-Since then I have had zero problems and the car is so smooth and sharp, it drives like a dream.- I want to know if anyone has ever heard of such a problem. I know that this car was kept in a garage every night since it's arrival in the US in 1992.
I know this b/c the first owner was my Dad!!-who is this guy in the Fire-o? Talk is cheap. The Devil is in the Details.- like- where's the proof?------Bob

I own a 1987 MK1 MR2. It has 122,000 miles on it. The car is fantastic. I have owned it for two years and all I have ever had to do is preventative maintenance! (tires, brakes etc.). Can anyone give me any idea of problems I could expect in the next 30,000 miles?

I think the MR-2 was one of the greatest cars ever built.
I hope one day I will be able to own one. This site is the best

I have a 1991 Turbo. Factory stock except for HKS Power Flow and 15" Fittipaldi Wheels. Next will come Turbo Exhaust and New Paint. Other than that I think I'll leave well enough alone...

I am a fellow MR2 owner and must say of all the cars out there to modify, I've had incredible enjoyment modifying my 86 MR2. Even though it may not be the fastest car out there, the feel and advantages of owning one is hard to match by any car PERIOD!

I know that people are going to hate me for this but, I just have to say it. If Toyota returns the MR2 to the US market, the cars uniqueness will just fade into the sunset. I like being able to drive my MR2 and not see another one for days. Just imagine how many Honda Civics/Acura Integras you see each day. I wouldn't want anyone's MR2 to just become as common as that.

Edd, If Toyota doesn't bring the MR. back here then in five years when they all have 150,000 miles on them or idiots have wrecked them all, we will be reduced to driving Eclipses, 240SX's or worse yet some ill handling Honda product (NSX excluded) and remembering the glory days in our TWO's (Don't worry, sports cars are not "in" right now, so your new MR2 will be rare anyway, all the sheep out there want a "sport-utility" so they can "have a demanding view of the road" Ha Ha Ha Ha..... Mr. Toyota... please bring the Mr2 back to us!!!!!

Well, I don't know if I'm making a mistake or not, but it looks like
I can get an '88 mk1SC with under 100K miles for about 5 grand. This is a good $700-$800 more than the ones I'd been seeing around here (LA), but appears to be in better shape. Does this sound like a good deal to you folks ? The car is completely stock.

Edd: I have to agree with you on this one as I like not being lost in the crowd (catch my post on the 26th of last month?). I'd rather not see myself coming & going all day (ala Mustang). Shawn: 150k?....give us some credit. At this age GM cars are long dead and re-cycled into beer cans (probably leaky ones), but a well maintained Toyota is in it's prime! And lastly (& leastly), wiggy: my car has NO oversteer. With Dunlop D40M2 (205/50/ZR15) tires, handling is almost dead neutral and totally predictable. Tell a Porsche 911t owner that HIS oversteer is "crappy" and he'll more than likely slap you silly.

If they would ever bring back the MR2 I'd hope that they would make limited amounts of them so they don't lose there uniqueness!! oh by the way, I'm desperately seeking a turbo MR2 w/less than 40k all options and in near mint or perfect cond. for less than 15,000. Must be near pennslyvania or surrounding states like ohio,VA,MD, NY, or in the 500mile vacinity. later.

Shawn you're right about all MR2's aging with mileage (I've got just under 80K, gonna get it rebuilt at 100K) as well as, in the worst case. being wrecked. Todd's idea of importing them in limited amounts is one good way to ensure Mister 2's uniqueness. Maybe he should talk to Toyota.
Also, Shawn, I'm not sure about where you live but, here in California wanna be sports cars like Honda Civics, Preludes, Del Sols, CRXs, Accords, and Acura Integras ARE in. Luckily they run out of NOS in an extended highway shootout before I run out of gas.

Another thing, has anyone seen Sport Compact Cars: Project MR2. Around 406HP at the crank, 336 at the wheel WITHOUT NOS, weighing 1000lbs. less than a Ferrari Testarrosa and its still VERY (at least I think) 50 state street legal. Lets see that out of another 4cyl. turbo out of Japan.

Shawn, Edd: Limited importing sounds good as a concept but to me raises some questions: US spec cars usually require much higher emissions and safety standards than other markets (to pass DOT and CAFE) so I don't think you could use an existing model (same reason why exotics like Ferraris are so expensive here compared to Europe). Mass production is the only way to do this cost-effectivly and that already failed. I'm not sure what markets still have access, but do they still even produce a left drive model? For Toyota to send a handfull of cars here without mass production, they would have to be basically hand built customs...BIG$$$...You'd be better off going the gray market route and doing the changes yourself. And BTW, if you want to talk about limited importing, check the '95 US spec MR2 production numbers.

Shawn: Just looking at your before pictures of the '91 turbo. I was wondering, in the picture your car doesn't appear to have directional tyres (tires if you prefer). Did the US model not come standard with Bridgestone RE71 directionals?? If not you should give them a try. They work brilliantly with the MR2. I've tried 6 different types (including Pirelli directionals which I had removed after 1 day) and there is no comparison. The bridgestones are perfect.
