Shawn: Just looking at your before pictures of the '91 turbo. I was wondering, in the picture your car doesn't appear to have directional tyres (tires if you prefer). Did the US model not come standard with Bridgestone RE71 directionals?? If not you should give them a try. They work brilliantly with the MR2. I've tried 6 different types (including Pirelli directionals which I had removed after 1 day) and there is no comparison. The bridgestones are perfect.

I Own A 89 Toyoda Mr2 and i love it to death, its just too bad that they don't sell them any more in the u.s.. If they did I would Love to Buy a brand new one because of the reliability they have an very low maintence, I have never had any promblems with my car and thats why i would love to own a new one.

THIS IS A TECHNICAL QUESTION. I own a turbo '93. I want to do some suspension changes to modify the handling. Do any of you have experience with (1) lowering springs standard vs progressive rate (2) torsion bar changes eg. Suspension Techniques (3) and adjustable shocks. I may want to autocross the car so any of you racers or technical experts out there with any helpful info, I would appreciate it.

Hey Geoff, great website! Thanx. Just one thought though. I don't understand programming and URL's and stuff like that so what I'm about to suggest might be real time consuming and of no interest to you, but..... check out http://www.off-road.com/4x4web/jeep/answerman/ That site is set up in a Q&A format so that people can post specific questions and others can post answers "tied" directly to that question. I know it's been of tremendous help to me in restoring my Jeep.

After selling my MR2 about two months ago for reasons of a growing family, I've just received last week the new price list of Toyota for Switzerland, and at the USD price of 38,000, I have just ordered a bran spanking new MR2, white, T.Top, AC and all the extras. The wife can keep the Jeep, I'm back to having fun.

Thanks for removing Rick's lewd remarks. Are there any laws regarding electronic harassment over the internet? A person that is posting such obnoxious and profane comments should be told with some threat of legal reprise to cease and desist. I hope that you are successful in blocking any further comments that he might make. He was ruining the comraderie and fun that this web site enjoys. Keep up the good work!

QUESTION: Will an engine from a 1987 supercharged version go into a 1985 normally aspirated version? If so, what adjustments will need to be made, and what extra equipment will need to be added? Same question applies to a turbocharged engine from a 90 or newer model....can it be done? It seems that the previous owners of the car were not quite as....er...kind, to my car as I am, and there is a trace amount of smoke coming from the exaust during warm up, rather than replace the valves, or (gasp) get the rings replaced, I have decided to replace the whole engine, finding one won't be a problem, but I was wondering how much more performance I could get out of my already potent little sports car....any suggestions or related info would be greatly appreciated....thank you
Wed Sep 3 12:38:4 1997
David McAfee
...before anyone says anything, I am aware that I made an error in my last post, specifically, that the supercharged engine was not available in 1987, but rather 1988...my apologies....

I own a '91 MR2T and take every opportunity to drive it as fast as I can. I am interested in upgrading and increasing Hp over the next couple of years and would eventually like to approach the 500 Hp limit I've heard rumors about. Please direct any advice or comments to my email address.

Bill, take a look a Sport Compact Car Magazine's: Project MR2. Its pushing 426 HP at the flywheel and 336 HP at the tires. All this produced by a Turbonetics turbo, Bell intercooler, RC large throttle body, HKS electronics, HKS intake, HKS exhaust and Cartech FMU (whew!!) And whats surprising is, they haven't opened up the engine, yet, at least I think. Anyways keep an eye out for updates on Poject MR2 because they're not done yet.
Thu Sep 4 13:13:25 1997
Edd (ppp1066.stk.inreach.net)
Alright this is a technical question. My '91 MR2 Turbo is pushing 80K Miles and I know that upgrading an engine, that old, to over 300 HP just might not be safe. Anyways I'm wondering would rebuilding/refurbishing the engine make it suitable for upgrading??

It's running split fire plugs, and is getting ready for a new air intake, probably HKS. I Love My Mr2. "WHO COULD ASK FOR ANYTHING MORE?" Except for maybe the killer stereo and alarm system its got!

Doug (83.chicago-035.il.dial-access.att.net)
Last year I installed a K&N filtercharger on my 91 turbo MR2.This is the large cone shaped filter that replaces the airbox. This week I took it off to clean it out again, and I decided to take the intake piping off down to the turbo to check for dirt or leaks. There was a large amount of grit and dirt inside of the piping and the mass air sensor. I was never really impressed with the performance gains, in fact the only gain was a lot of noise, but I left it on because the add leads you to believe that it filters better than the stock setup (and I had already wasted $150.00). Obviously this isn't true, because there was no dirt inside the intake when I installed the K&N, and I cleaned and reoiled the filter several times over the last year. My advice to anyone that feels they must replace the factory airfilter is DON'T!!! Not if you like your car. With the amount of dirt that I found inside of mine, I am scared to think about the premature engine wear that has already happened. And you wont see a gain in power anyway, unless you also turn up the boost. So don't waste your money on K&N.

My name is Amy and my boyfriend Ronnie drives a black 92 MR2 and it rides great! Especially when he installed aa new racing clutch in it--he really loves to scratch 2nd gear! I, myself, have fallen in love with the Mr2's smoothness. Other facts on his ride- 17" chromed Gerwalt mesh wheels, ffreaky illumination in the wheels, the usual filter and exhaust with plans of the addition of an intercooler and such. Anything else you goota ask him, I'm just along for the ride!

In response to the recent revival of the MR2 vs Tupperware thing, I thought I would share an experience. A friend of mine suffers through life with an 86 4cyl Tupperware and I've screwed around with him from on occasion just for fun. Not with my MR2, though...that would be a pointless waste of Ultra94. I ran him with my "winter" car, an '84 EXP! (don't laugh, it was cheap, it's in good shape, it's great in the snow, and unlike the piece of GM tupperware I'm comparing it to, it suprisingly does'nt break much) Now, as all of you should know, the EXP was no performance car....It's an Escort with a funny-looking front end and no back seat. Even the pathetic drivetrain is the same except for a tubular exhaust "header?" (well, it is a tri-y...) and slightly different carb calibration...oooh, aaah! This beater gasbox against an alleged "sports car". The results: I wasted him...time after time. As he played with shift points and launching techniques, I (much to his dismay) and my poor, old EXP just kept chalking up the unexiteing victories (with a little puff of smoke at high RPM's, just for good measure). Every now and then, some kid in a Tupperware will pull up to my MK1 at a light and attempt to taunt me to a contest, but all I can do is sit there and laugh at the thought of the EXP kicking their ass. As for the big, bad V6 cars...I have an 87 Shadow ES (yeah it's turbo, but it's still a slug) that takes care of them with greater ease than the EXP takes 4cyl's. All this while the MR2 rests in the garage waiting for more suitable competition. And, ALL Tupperware owners: stay away from Neons (Hi!)...test figures show you're outgunned again! HA HA HA:-) & BTW, top speed on 4cyl Tupperwares is 103mph (per "Road &Track":Nov,84).

I had an MR2 for about 3 months until 2 weeks ago until it caught fire while I was driving it ( I recently had the motor replaced because the original blew a head gasket). There really is nothing left of the back. Despite all the problems I still think it's one of the best cars I've ever driven. I would buy another one but it's so hard to find one that hasn't been abused - I think alot of you will agree with that. That's probably the reason for mine going up like it did. I'm assuming it was a fuel leak, but can't prove anything. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Just purchased a 1986 MR2, this is my 18th Toyota. I am very impressed with this vehicle. Absolutely no rust and only 125,000 km on it. As soon as I picked it up I took it in for a new timing belt, front struts, brakes, platinum plugs, oils etc.
I am very interested in finding out what after market products are available in Canada for this model year. Also if anyone knows where I can pickup a owners manual for an 86 MR2 please let me know. I purchased the service manual from Canadian Tire; $14.00, not bad.

I have a bit of experience with toyotas, and mods. I've designed A dual feed fuel rail with fuel supply to twin 550's and HKS AIC III. I'll even sell a system for '91-'95 turbo MR2. The same '95 has 1.0mm grex h.g., HKS 264 cams, evcIIIw/atm, vpc, twin power, fcd, etg, bg, tt, extrude honed intake, head, exaust, greddy 550 aux inj, intercooler, seq. bov, bored 4mm throttle body, sport turbo exh.,spf air filter, three angle valve job, and I tagged it "2LFRMHEL". Just to let you know a SUPRA tagged "3LFRMHEL" I helped work, producing a nice 520hp@ flywheel the MR2 hasn't been dynoed yet!

Well, I just went and did it. '91 NA 52K miles, dark green and mine... as of two hours ago. By the way, I looked for a mk1SC
for some time, but found that almost all of them were pretty beat up or else exorbitantly priced. The mk2NA is in quite good shape, fast enough for me and should (knock wood) provide reliable fun for years. Wish me luck.

In June of 1997 I purchased my first MR2. Shortly afterwards I felt I was familiar enough with the car to take it to a Northern California Car Club Meeting held on McClellan AFB. I am proud to say the my STOCK MR2, (No turbo, smaller than stock steet tires no less) was able to hang in there with the best of them.. The course was laid out like an SCCA Solo race, just you and a clock. by the end of the day my best time taking into account he "PAX" index for SCCA Solo racing, I ended with a 45 second best lap... The time of the day was a 40 second lap... Ohh yea... My 91 MR2 is also an AUTOMATIC... Beggars can't be choosers.... I found it used for a steal!!! Feel free to send me mail...

The MR2 deserves a website as high quality as this one is. Great job to whoever puts this together. I love the Mr2 and you all are awesome for loving it as well. It is a car that should have never left North America. It's beautiful looks combined with INCREDIBLE handling at a price that wasn't $60 or $70K made this car very special. I have a metallic green '91 MR2 non turbo and am looking for a '94 or '95 turbo. I hope to own one someday. Great site.. thank you.

Hey MR2 lovers, I just recently lowered my 91 one and a half inches. I wasn't expecting too much difference in handling because
it already handled very well. Only got one thing to say. DO IT !!
It is the best $200 I spent on my car so far. Also, people think I am
weird because every time I drive I have this big ass grin on my face.
Anybody else have the same problem?

I have a '91 Mr2 Turbo with minor mods, HKS exhaust, HKS Power Flow,
16" Konsei wheels, and Intrax springs. I need advice on what the next
step should be: do i get a HKS Twin Power Pack, or should I get an
EVC, or should I go with the VPC (oh ya..do I still need a FCD if I
get the VPC? In the HKS catalog it says that I don't but in the SCC
project MR2 they use both. What gives?). Or instead of all EVC should
I just get a new turbo from Aerodyne or Turbonetics and have the external wastegate set for higher psi ( like 15 psi ), would I still
need an EVC? HEEELLPP me with some good advice, I've been hearing and
reading to many mods stories and I need to choose one for my rocket!

What I have is a Jan 85 MR2 With only 5700 miles on it. It has been crashed in the rear end, and has been sitting since July of 86. My question is: Is this a rare car and if not where can I get after market Rear body parts for it? Toyota Wants $499 For each of the rear fenders. Considering I only paid $500 for the car I would like to go after market (unless its some rare model). The website is great...

Oh my god! I can't believe I forgot to mention how great my little tonka toy is!!!!! (Don't laugh, a friend thought of it several years ago and it's stuck). I have a mental list of friends who will buy my toy if I ever tire of it. Ha Ha Ha. Not anytime soon. My Dad liked mine so much that when the MK2 was developed he bought one. He only kept if for a year. He still likes my MK1 better.
Great to see so many fans of the MR2. To drive one is to understand.
Recently, some dork "accidentally" dragged a key or other sharp object (local body shop confirmed suspicion) along my passenger side door panel, intake vent and rear panel. If I had caught the peon and tortured him/her I may not feel so bitter about it. Hopefully, in the spring I can bankroll a new paintjob - anyone got any suggestions for a great colour they've never seen on an MR2 but thought would be great?

I never knew what a MR2 was until 4 months ago. I saw a 90' parked out on the lot, and thought it was real sharp looking. Today my friend brought his new MR2 over to my house, so I was very excited. But when I sat in the drivers seat, I started shaking. My friend is only 18. I just turned 15, I wonder how he is able to afford that. Cause next year when I turn 16, I don't want to drive a piece of junk. I wanna ride in style. All I have to do from now till then is to persuade my parents into buying me one.

I've been getting about 27-28 mpg on the freeway at 75-85, but only about 25-26 around town (lots of stop 'n go, twisty hill climbing, A/C on full time). Is this pretty typical ?

Had a MK1 some 8 years ago - it had the best handling I ever experienced, but I´ll give all you new owners a tip : lts essential that you let the engine warm up slowly, if you rev it to 7000 rpm within the first 10 minutes after a coldstart the engine is dead before you reach 100.000 km.

Recently purchased a red 1988 4a-ge ( mid life crisis).Paid $3500. with 51,000 mi. through a dealer. I believe I got one hell of a deal (
based on what I have learned through this site). Runs like a new. Only
thing it desparatly needs is black floor mats ( can anyone help?). My MR2 has made me feel like I am 18, again. Would like to know if any MR2 clubs are located within range of Pittsfied, Ma., so I can learn more about the "pocket rocket" I have come to love. Car has never seen a winter, and never will.

Just finished reading the latest of SCC. They brought their 91' turbo
to G-Force to have the computer uograded/tuned. They mention that the stock computer has a map in it for 14 psi and 16 psi as well as a fuel
cut off disabler. Does this mean that if I have the cpu from my '91 turbo tuned to 14 psi that I don't need a Electronic Valve Controller
or a Fuel Cut-Off Defenser. Let me know at: velceleang@pios.com

Attention JOE MARCHICA!!! How did you get 300hp for $500?? Please go
into detail, this would be ideal for me...a '91 turbo owner on a budget. Please list the components you used to achieve this, also is this flywheel or wheel horsepower? Have you experienced any problems,
such as the fuel cutting out, or leaks, blow by, anything? Email-velceleang@pios.com

ALAN WILIIAMS (198.49.31.101)
I've looked in every car magazine and searched the web for info on engine swaps for the MR2 (MKI) or (MK11). Is their anyone out there who wants more power? has anyone looked at the powertrain in a late model CAMERY ? 3.0 litters QUAD CAMS, ALL ALUMINUIM HEADS, BLOCK, ETC.
THEN WE COULD TURBO IT. Alot more power than stock unit and far more reliable than a motor than has $10,000 of parts in it and only lasts 10,000 miles or so. I know, I've spent a lot on HOP-UP parts and I'm sick of it. I want a BIG motor, then we'll turbo it. IF ANY ONE HAS INFO, PLEASE POST IT HERE or SOMEWHERE because I never seen any info anywhere . THANKS, ALAn

'85 MR2 in the process of becoming a roadster (topless permanently).
'93 Civic for autocross, fun, and general transportation.
I was wondering if anyone else has chopped one of these cars, and if
so, what were the long term results? I am having a professional race
car fabricator do the chassis stiffening, and then, off with the top!
I don't spend much time online, so a snail mail address is:

ALAN, according to a Toyota mechanic friend of mine, the 6-cylinder Camry motor will fit into our MR2's because the base camry has the exact same motor and transmission as the base (5SFE..non-turbo) MR2...so needless to say the V-6 will fit anywhere there is a 5SFE motor. BUT, although I've never checked, I am not sure the V6 camry comes with a 5-speed. I would love to have a V-6 in my MR2, Turbo lag ABSOLUTELY SUCKS and it just gets worse as you crank up the boost and add bigger turbos and pipes! Anyway, the stock V-6 could be tuned quite a bit even W/O the turbos, but a 6-8 psi system would be great.

What's the best looking foglamp set for my '86 MkI? I am loyal to Catz but open to suggestions. Also, where can I get a set of clear corner lamps for my car? BTW, just reached 90K miles and still too sweeeeeeet! As for everyone else, buy Nitto tires, they're the best.

Own a 93 NA and am interested in putting front brakes from a 93 Turbo. Anyone know the approximate cost? Also does anyone have the TRD strut-tower braces? And if so, are they welded together or bolted together? Also does anyone have the camber set to more than it's usual neg. camber?

Has anyone seen the Electric supercharger from Grand Technologies, Inc.? It looks like a turbo housing that is I suppose electrically driven and a little power amp looking box. Anyone heard about this or know if it works? They claim upto a 30% increase in power and it's also made for smaller engines like atv's and the like. Saw it in the latest SCC..

I have a 1992 MR2 Turbo which is always asking for trouble. 1) a lot of young guys come up with a challenge. 2) I'd spend too much money in
the speeding tickets; even at 65 Km/h. "Your car, does, is too attractive to my sight", said the policeman while he was writing me a speeding ticket.
