I am a high school student who got a 86 MR-2 Auto and loves it. I am just eager to learn more about what I can do with it. I allways had a stupid wander: Can I ever transform an auto to a manu?

Does anybody have old HKS data on their old turbo systems? They're
not very excited about helping with technical data! I have a cast-
iron HKS manifold, J&S knock sensor, etc ready to go, may use T28
turbo or some variation thereof-the manifold was built for a T3.
Any thoughts would be appreciated!!

My Black 92 Turbo is stock engine wise, but I've already got to work
on the suspension. The handling was phenomenal right out of the box,
but I wanted the car to sit a bit lower, so I installed Tokico Illum-
na's and TRD springs...the ride is a lot firmer than before, which dissappointe me. That's why I got ADJUSTABLE SHOCKS! I have them on the softest setting, and it is still very harsh. But, aside from the ride, the results are nothing short of breathtaking. It looks like an INDY car, the back end sits so low. And I thought it handled well stock! I can now take a corner as fast as my Yokohama AVS 17's will hold up. Its insane! If a 93 suspension can handle any better, I'd like to drive one, because this is unreal. A few quick comments: The gearbox sucks, and my chassis settles and shifts over anything more than a small bump. Is this because of the T-tops and their effect on the structural integrity. Also, to all of you spankers crying about turbo lag, if you know how to drive the car, the lag is almost invisible. I love this car, and I love Toyota's, and will frequent this site in hopes of intelligent and helpful communication. I'd also
like to mention I also have a 1987 Toy FX 16, with TRD headers, HKS exhaust, intake, etc. The engine? None other than the 4A GE that is tucked behind the heads of all MKI drivers. Yes, its fast too.

I just bought an 86' MR2 with a Twin Cam engine (do they all come with a Twin Cam in 86'???)this week, and it is a sweet machine! Lotus did the handling, which makes it handle like a slot car. The duel exhuast gives it a nice hum when I take-off. I would like to spend some money on it, to improve performance even more, any suggestions???

While I love my 83 Porsche 944, I feel that it is way too expensive for a college student to tend to as his studies now occupy a majority of my time. While it will never handle as well as my Porsche, a 91 mr2 would be a welcome step down from the cost of ownership of a german masterpeace. Rice rockets are my forte as I work on them almost daily at my shop, But I fear that once I leave the wonderness of the porsche's magic, there will no longer be a piece of my heart devoted to extreme offerings of the sports car that defined sports cars to me. I hope the MR2 can give what I enjoy to me for 1/10 the price and performance level.

Sign the petition everybody, my '93 is about to hit 100K miles and I want a brand-new one!!! To the guy complaining about the "harsh" suspension on his lowered MR2...it has little to do with the shocks (wether they be adjustable or not), you now have MUCH firmer springs. No shock is going to make it a comfortable ride, but your adjustable Tokikos will work out best in the end because you can stiffen up the suspension (shocks at least) to the point where you handle more like a Go-Kart. If you still had the "stock" shocks your car would bounce like a pogo-stick.

91 Mr2. would like to modify my exhaust system with headers, freeflow catalytic conv. and muffler. Would this help with the horsepower? Also I seem to experience leaking in the exhaust betweeen the converter and the muffler. Is this a common problem with the mkII Mr2s? Does anyone know where I can get clear corner lenses?

What are typical times for MKII Turbo's stock (esp. 92's, if there is
any difference)? I ran a 15.1 with a dirty OE filter and 17" wheels
which probably hurt my acceleration a little. Dylan Walker claims a 14.37 e.t. in his stock 92! That's incredible to me, but is this typical? Also, does the Greddy TD06 make more power than HKS Sport
turbo upgrade? And finally, I'm looking for a turbo kit for my
1987 Toy FX16 (4AGE engine) HKS used to make a kit, but they discontinued it. I'd love to get my hands on one used, new,
a different bolt on kit, etc. Great site, any help would be appreciated.

Seth: Naowdays, a '91 mr2 turbo would cost more than a '83 944, not 1\10 the price. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the mr2 handled even better than the Porsche. It's not like you had a 911 or anthing.

Hey Seth, You dare to compare an 83 antique Porsche 944 to a 91 Mr2 turbo? Just test drive a turbo Mister two and you will find out what world class sports car handling really is. The only Porsche that could beat the Mr2 turbo is the 911.

Does anyone else want Real Power in a MR2 without spending thousands upon thousands of dollars to build a fast motor, only to have it last a few thousand miles ? I've hot rodded motors for years, but what I find is that the more power you extact from an engine the less life it has. I want to build a MR2 with a V6 3.0 out of a late model Camry. It looks like the entrie drivetrain complete with trasmission, ECU , etc. will fit. Imagine a 3.0 liter MR2, which is what Toyota should have put in the car to begin with. Don't get me wrong I love my 86 Mr2. If anyone has any info, please post it. Or if you don't have any info, Lets find some. Thanks Alan

Imagine a MR2 with a V6 3.0 out of a late model Camry with 200hp stock. (If that bores you we can put a turbo on it.)HOT RODDED motors are great but they cost Alot of money! A motor which is pushed to the limit will not live long. The return of the money spent vs how long it last is very short in most cases. I want to build a MR2 with lots of HP and TORQUE ! I've been to many junk yards searching for parts for my MR2. In the course of trying to find parts it looks like the entire drivetrain complete with trasmission, ECU , etc. will fit. I must be the Only person in the world which can imagine a MR2 with a V6 3.0 out of a late model Camry with 200+hp/ft.lbs Torque stock. (if that's not enough, then we can HOT ROD it, turbo it, etc.) I wish sometimes the MR2 was an American car(like an Fireo), then maybe I could find some info on ENGINE SWAPS. I've done numerous searches on the internet, and I've found Nothing! The only info about MR2's seems to be from people who want to sell you parts to hop-up your exsisting motor up. HOT RODDED motors are great but they cost Alot of money! A motor which is pushed to the limit will Not Live Long. The return of the money spent VS how long it last is very short in most cases. I want to build a MR2 with lots of HP and TORQUE ! I've been to many junk yards searching for parts for my MR2. I must be the Only person in the world which can imagine a MR2 with an ALL Aluiminum Quad Cam engine, V6 3.0 out of a late model Camry with 200+hp/ft.lbs Torque stock. (if that's not enough, then we can HOT ROD it, turbo it, etc. "I will because 200+ hp is not enough") I wish sometimes the MR2 was an American car(mid-engine Fierro), then maybe I could find some info on ENGINE SWAPS. (Which means you have to buy more of those same parts, If you have to pay a mortgage you only do that once!)The return of the money spent VS how long it last is very short in most cases. I want to build a MR2 with lots of HP and TORQUE ! I've been to many junk yards searching for parts for my MR2. I wish I had just swapped the complete drvetrain to begin with instead of re-building it. I figure I could have done a complete engine swap for about what I spent to re-build it.If anyone has any info, please post it. Or if you don't have any info, Lets find some. Thanks Alan

Fred Vachss (canogaf.rdyne.bna.boeing.com)
To Alan Williams: I like thinking about swaps too, but having done some in other vehicles I think there could a lot of effort involved in getting a bigger motor into an MR2 effectively. If the half-shafts just happen to mate up with the Camry transaxle that would be wonderful, but splicing may be necessary. Then you need to fab
motor mounts and an exhaust system. Then get all the wiring to match
up. Then, possibly most important of all, you have to keep the bigger
engine cool. This is often a big problem in swaps and an even bigger
one when swapping to a mid-engined location. I also prefer the
grunt of cubic inches to other hop-up techniques, but think that
the time/effort/reliability equation still works against a V6 swap
- unless you have months of spare time to work out all the details
and fabricate all the one-off parts. I guess somebody has to be the
pioneer Alan. Go for it and let us know how it goes.

i wonder that why not the toyota company make a bigger mr2 or atleast
replace the 3.0 and 3.0 turbo under the hood of the mr2 to compete with the others sports cars.as a mr2 owner(89/model) i would love to purcharge a more performent mr2 instead of modify it anyway it is two small to modify the engine unless stretch its body.however thanks to toyota for a great perfoment mr2 in the pass years.waiting to see a new debut of mr2 from toyota .

I own a '93 MR2 Turbo, and I love it. I do have one problem. My MR2 idles very eradically. Sometimes it idles fine and other times it idles very low. Once it even stalled out. It usually occurs right after I started it up or after I am driving it for awhile. But when I stomp on the accelerator when it is in neutral, the idle usually returns to normal. If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate them. aszetela@brill.acomp.usf.edu

I bought my first MR2 right out of college in 1991. I still own my 1991 MR2, and have 94,000 miles on it, so I was beginning to think about a replacement car. I have looked at several other makes and models, but when it was all said and done, I came back to the MR2, and just this week bought a 91 Turbo MR2 which was wrecked in the front with 53,000 miles for $2500. I found a front clip (evidently the original owner is a member of this website) for $1500, and I am having them put together. What is a reasonable price for leather seats? Also, I'd like to buy a factory CD player. Anyone out there have these parts? What about ideas for paint colors that might look good other than the original faded red. The front end was that pearl green which is an interesting color.

For a four-banger, my '87 is mighty powerful. It is naturally-aspirated, but it managed to keep up with a '86 Thunderbird and outran a CRX. And to think, at one time I thought the only good cars were the old Chevy and Dodge muscle cars. I was wrong!!!!!!!!!!

Hi! Proud owner (4 months now!) of 1991 NA. Am more in love with it than ever. Hey! For all you folk with faded (oxidized) non clear- coated paint - I "discovered" something that works fabulously. It's called "TR3" and it's a wax/polish/resin you can buy in any auto parts store. I was amazed at the difference it made to my tired paint job. My spoiler (and the rest of the car) looks [almost] brand new! Try it, you'll like it! One question about my car's performance someone can help me with? It squeaks and groans badly any time I go over a bump (or even a crack in the road), as if there was no lubrication in the suspension at all. But, by the end of the day, (or after driving for a while) the squeaks go away (as if the grease (?) had warmed up). Am I maybe talking new shocks here, or do I need a lube job? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for the great MR2 site, Geoff! Come here every day (ok, I love my "Two"!).

I'm owner of an 1991 Mr2 turbo (CA specs)with HKS power flow air filter, twin power ignition system, fuel cut defencer and high flow exhaust.
I'm living in Luxembourg(Europe) and want to exchange opinions and experience with people who implemented the same changes on their cars,
as there is no information available in Europe:I might have problems with my cylinder head gasket and looking for any help and solutions on this subject !
Thanks !

I`ve owned a '93 MR2 for exactly 1 year today. It's fantastic fun, although watch your arse doesn't swap places with the front when giving it loads (you've been warned!!). Web site is great, but some more decent pictures would be nice. Who said they are a hair dressers car?
If you are going to upgrade get the handling sorted first especially those pre '92 MK2. Can I recommend bored out to 2.2 litres with a super charger (turbos kick in to hard) good enough for 225bhp. Don't forget brembo anchors either.
Keep up the good work. See you in Le Mans '98.

Very interesting site! We enjoyed the articles. It's our understaing,
though, that the MR2 original design was bought from "Fier_" and Toyota
fixed it's problems and "wallaa" - the MR2. (with Lotus suspension!)

I MUST respond to Dan & Terri's comment about the MR2's origins as a "Fier_" ( a bad word around here ). This is totally unfounded, and the "Fier_" is a total pile of turd! I have SMOKED V6 "Fier_" in my normally aspirated 85 MR2 that just has HKS exhaust & flywheel & TRD wires. The "Fier_" cannot touch the Toyota in terms of handling, acceleration, braking (Chevette underpinnings & iron duke 4 & 6 cylinders-the four banger sounds like a mail truck), build quality, resale value... I could go on. "Fier_" lovers visit this site to see what real cars are like-when they're not getting their plastic cars repainted or extinguishig engine fires! And those trunk-mounted luggage racks are SWEET!

I've owned three cars...A '75 Monte Carlo (350 w/ headers), a 1987
Toyota FX 16 (moderately modified), and my current '92 MR2 Turbo.
The quality and distinctiveness of the Toyota line is incredible.
I loved spanking GTI'S AND CRX'S in my FX16, and my MR2 is untouchable
Overall, looks, quality, gas mielage, straight line speed, handling,
head turning factor, fun, MR2 are the best. Though I may sound like a
commercial, I LOVE TOYOTA

I just recently drove a '91 MR2 with 95,000 miles and it was a blast. Not only did it has a lot of miles but it still was tight. It didn't rattle or squeek and had smooth handling and shifting with plenty of power. It seems so impractical to buy a car with only 2 seats and no real cargo space but it's so much fun that I'm thinking that I can do without the rest. I'm now looking for a '91 or '92 MR2 turbo with less than 70,000 miles(not thrashed), sunroof, 5 spd., that's completely stock. I live in California and would need to buy it here in consideration of smog and time. I'd like to pay between $10k and $12.5k. Wish me good luck!

I have owned these cars for 11 years now and love them more and more
each year. I have an 88 Supercharged that i have had for 5 years now,
I have lowered it 2 inches, put a larger HKS pulley on it, KYB struts,
suspension spring specialist springs, poly urathane bushings in the steering, put a bigger sway bar in the front and had one made for the rear, dynomax exhaust. the best way to avoid turbo lag is to buy a supercharged! I would enjoy talking to anyone else with a supercharged!

This site just rulz!!!! I bought my first MR2 about 3 months ago. It's a 93 NA Red T-bar. In that 3 month span of time I've done all of the preventive maintance on it (timeing belt, oil change, tune up,..). I've also added some goodies like NGK plugs and Nology wires, HKS intake,Momo black leather knob, leather boot, and a two hundred watt amp (just loud enough to blow the T-tops off). I have lots of plans for this car but I have to take them a year at a time. Next year brakes(cross-drilled) and shocks.

It only last for week or so before it screeching again. Just wondering anybody out there having the same problem and whether there any solution to it. By the way , the belt ( timing) is still quite new. Suspecting either the belt or the pulley....???

Is it possible to put a front-mounted intercooler on a 91-up MR2 turbo? If so would it be any better than a side intercooler? Also I have heard of someone cutting the space in between the engine and the trunk and dropping a porsche flat-6 in there. Is this new? Possible? My 91 MR2Turbo is the best car I've ever owned. I am the very proud owner of a red 86 MR2. It has 285000 Km and is still running strong. What a great, reliable, sporty and fast car. Can't wait to upgrade to a supercharger. Have to park it for the winter, too much snow here. I tried it last year and nearly ripped the front spoiler off. Awesome web page. Are there any other MR2 fanatics on the Canadian prairies??

I have a 1991 turbo MR2. I am very curious if you can tell me how can I improve my machine so I can get the full horsepower that my car has to offer. I do not want to change a lot of things just want to beef it up a little maybe boost the power by 25%. Is there anything I can do?

I was just reading the past guest books and I really liked the idea of putting a Camery V6 in the MR2. I just got done looking at the Toyota page and they do have a Camery with a 5 speed and a V6. If anyone has done this already I would love to hear how hard it was. I love my 93 NA but if I could put a V6 in it.........!!!!!!!!

Well I have been unable to locate what I need for my MR2, soooo it's time for it to stop wasting space. I am selling a 1986 MR2, the interior is in excellent condition, needs a little spot touch up on the body, and it needs a new engine (I believe that there is a cracked cylinder). So if anyone out there wants a fixer uper please e-mail me. Looking to get about $600 or best offer.

Great site... I'm looking for a 88-91 MR2. The body condition
isn't important to me but the drive train must be in great shape.

I have a 91 non-turbo in Super White. I just had the radiator replaced
yesterday due to a leak. But I'm losing my heat when I stop at lights and get it back when I drive. Is it possible I have air bubbles in the system? I've been dealing with dealers ever since my private Toyota
mechanic retired, and it's a nightmare. They just don't seem to care at all. If anyone has any suggestions, I sure would appreciate it so much. I love the car, but finding honest reliable service for her is very
challenging!

I have a question about stereo improvements. I have an 86 MkI and I tried to have fitted today, 8" subs behind the seats. To my dismay, I was uncomfortable because it pushed the seats forward permenantly. I was wondering if anyone has had success w/ putting subs inside their MkI. I really just have the stock 4" speakers. Now I want to utilize my 300 watt amp. Are there speakers I can install on the doors that can handle 300 watts? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm thinking about getting a '91 MR-2, but am hesitant. It looks a bit small for me (I'm a big guy), and has 82,000 miles. I'm going to check on the price tomorrow. It sure looks sharp. Any comments regarding the car? (I.E. What's a "good" price for a '91 model? What tends to go bad, etc?) All comments are appreciated! Thanks. :)

To Brian: Around here (southern CA) a '91 with 82K on it would probaly sell for around $7K depending on condition/options. I am 6'1" and fit comfortably in mine, but don't have quite enough room to stretch my legs out straight with the seat back at its furthest.

If anybody has noticed the GREAT DEAL for a 1995 MR2 Turbo in the classified section.....for sale by Asia in California for $15K, low miles, with HKS and stuff. IT IS NOT A 1995 CAR, I CHECKED THE VIN # ON IT AND IT IS A 1991. This could have been an honest mistake, I hope it was, but MR2 buyers will travel 1,000's of miles to buy our automotive love so lets try to all be honest here so someone doesn't get screwed! Let's have an MR2 Rally in the midwest!!!!!

Since June 14,1985 I've been in love with my MR2! It was a midlife crisis(35yrs) purchase that has sustained me through ups and downs of life. And still, every time I see the little red beauty a smile returns to my face and my mind! Why I've waited to research the net about the car, I just don't know. I don't plan on modifying, lowering, or souping it at all. Real love doesn't need improvement...just exercise!
