Yo American MR2 drivers. What's the idea of the N/A MR2 engine over there. I read it's a 2.2 litre???? 135bhp engine??? are the emission laws that bad over there? Everywhere else it's the 3S-GE 2.0 litre 168bhp model. Can you get this model in the US?? (just wondering)

I've just bought my (first) MR2. A 1995 Tbar with 10K on the clock, CD, Aircon etc. Coming from a Diesal background, this car is just pure FUN!!!. (..But not as fast as your jap import Rob!).

i think that it is ideal that the MR2 was taken off the US market because it just makes the ones that we own more "One of a kind" If there were more MR2s out there then people wouldnt turn there heads as much. It is very rare that you see a Ferreri and it is also very rare that you see an MR2. Our cars are unique, lets keep it that way. i love when people watch my car as i speed by. email me if you want to know about my performance rebuilt engine. Cya

Is there any poor souls out there who have to get rid or their MKII turbo because they need a back seat, bad weather or high insurance? If so I have a proposition for you. I am looking to get a MR2 soon and would consider trading my Isuzu Impulse RS. For those of you who do not know The Impulse RS is a 1.6 liter turbo with all wheel drive, and the suspension was designed by Lotus. It has a passable back seat and it is great in snow. I know it is no MR2 but it is allot better than a four door. For more information email me at bshaw@cinemark.com.

I have a 1987 MR2 that I purchased from the original owner in 1986. The car has 180,000 miles on it. It drives well but needs some work. It is not rusty, but the frunt spoiler is damaged on the left side(probably a parking block). I need the part. If anyone cane help me, send a message.
Long live the MR2.

WE RECENTLY PURCHASED A BEAUTIFUL 1987 MR2 WITH ONLY 45k MILES. AFTER DRIVING THE CAR (FUN) I STARTED
READING UP ON THE "RACING" HISTORY OF THE CAR. I FOUND OUT THAT THE RETAIL ENGINE IS THE SAME AS THE 900 HORSE POWER RACING ENGINE, EXCEPT FOR THE PISTONS AND PISTON RODS. THE STOCK VALVE TRAIN IS USED ON THE 900 HP.RACING ENGINE. PRETTY IMPRESSIVE.

Denver, Colorado USA. Topic: Synthetic oil, Aamco Transmission. I previously signed the guest book, but after reading other comments, thought I would share some of my recent vehicle experiences in the hopes it may benefit someone else.
I recently (last month) purchased an '86 MR2 and after the John Elway Toyota dealership had checked the car over and pronounced it in great shape, I took it to Grease Monkey to have the oil changed and fluids checked. I asked about synthetic oil (I want this car to last a long time) and they asked if it leaked oil (it didn't) and told me since the MR2 was under 100,000 miles (97,000) it was OK (per guidelines given them by their Mobile One representative) to change to synthetic oil. A few days later I took it up in the mountains (150 mile roundtrip). There was a LOT of oil blow-by. Oil spots ALL over the back of the car and the brand new chrome exhaust tips were ringed with oil. I researched the web on synthetic oil and found lots of information, but couldn't find any actual hands-on experience with synthetic oil. Auto Zone gave me a number for Pennzoil tech support (800-373-5823). The guy who answered was extremely helpful and informative. He indicated that engines sh!
ould optimally be changed to synthetic oil only between 10,000 and 40,000 miles and that, in fact, I could potentially be DAMAGING my engine by running it with synthetic oil at this stage of its life (something to do with the oil barrier between the metal parts with synthetic oil was thinner than what the engine was accustomed to). I went back to Grease Monkey, showed them the oil on the car and they replaced the synthetic with 10w-30 (Pennzoil @ my request due to the help of the Pennzoil tech) @ no charge (after several vigorous discussions). After the change they also reported that the oil pan had been leaking (I assume because of the change to the synthetic oil). I have experienced no leakage since changing back to mineral oil.

continued... I recently had our 1990 Dodge Caravan engine (3.3L) rebuilt (cams, lifters, bearings, rings, etc). I asked the service manager about synthetic oil and he said go ahead if I wanted with the next oil change. Of course, he also said not to worry about changing the oil until 3,000 miles. I will try the synthetic, but not until I get to 10,000 miles on the rebuilt engine (I will also do my first oil change between 500 and 1000 miles - no matter what he said).

Dan Wetherbee (erchh001.nt.com)
continued... Let me also share a recent Aamco Transmission experience. The day before I bought the MR2, I bought an '83 Ford Thunderbird (167,000 miles) for some of my kids (I have 11) to drive. One week and 200 miles later after a home tune-up (16 year old son replaced plugs, PVC, air filter & plug wires) my son reported the transmission went out after driving 5 miles. I called a few transmission shops but they all said they would have to pull the transmission out to see what the problem was. I got an EXCELLENT story from the Aamco store. They would tow the vehicle @ no charge (that should have been a warning), they would run some tests, pressure & other wise, and do a road test. If then necessary, they would pull the pan and inspect the fluid & sediments ($40). Then if nothing conclusive @ that point they would pull the transmission ($270 which could be applied to any required repairs). Their initial observations were the same as my own. Fluid looked & smelled NEW (!
probably was- in retrospect, should have been another warning), tests showed transmission was OK. Road test left their mechanic stranded and it had to be towed back. After the vehicle warmed up, the transmission ceased to function. Inspection of the pan & fluid revealed nothing. I authorized them to pull the transmission based on the service manager's recommendation. He said whatever the problem was would either involve minor "soft parts" or all the "soft parts" or, worst case, "soft & hard" parts. After they pulled the transmission he called to report that the torque converter had gone out and metal had gone through the entire transmission and the whole thing ("hard & soft" parts) had to be rebuilt for $1200. I only paid $800 for the car, but it was going to cost me $300 just to get it back - with NO repairs.
Fri Dec 5 13:44:05 1997
Dan Wetherbee (erchh001.nt.com)
continued... Aamco will not put in used transmissions. Their business is rebuilding transmissions and from reports I have heard it is amazing (it shouldn't be amazing, since we are already aware that is the only way they make money) the number of transmissions that Aamco diagnoses as requiring rebuilds. I went & sat down with the service manager in person to discuss options. He was obviously very biased against used transmissions. He agreed to do the rebuild for $1000 (by using OEM parts in lieue of Aamco parts- contrary to Aamco's policy) if I could give him the extra time. He also told me that my bill up to that point was under $200 if I just walked away.
Which meant for $800 ($1000 minus $200) I would get a rebuilt transmission and not have to worry about finding another place and towing it. Unhappily, I agreed. After the rebuild I drove the car home (8 miles) and it ran poorly and deteriorated the closer I got to home where I discovered the catalytic converter for the right bank (V-8 engine) was glowing RED, RED hot. I took it in to a mechanic (Jim @ Raceway Auto) who immediately observed that my son had inadvertently switched two of the plug wires (and also noticed there were two loose transmission mounting bolts) which was causing gas to flow into the Catalytic converter. I had them do a computer diagnostic and exhaust inspection to see if I might be expecting any other surprises. My concern is wondering (I never asked to see the old torque converter - silly me) if the hot catalytic converter right next to the transmission had anything to do with the transmission failure after the engine warmed up. Think I will steer !
clear of Aamco in the future unless I have $1000 I don't know what to do with!

I just purchased my second MR2. It is a '93 Turbo teal blue. My first (a '92 reg. asp.) was wrecked after one and a half months ownership when I was hit by a drunk driver. I never thought I would be able to afford another one while they still were relatively new. I am LOVING it! Don't ever think this one will be on the market. These cars are going to be VERY collectable.

As long as avoiding AAMCO, go ahead and avoid the whole Midas chain as well. Last christmas I had a rear brake pad disintegrate (my fault) and with all the family in for the holidays, I just decided to have a local shop do it for the advertised $49. I brought them some stock Toyota pads that I had (I hate those squeally $8 ones).. After just ten minuites with the car (day after Christmas), the tech came out and said that MR2's were special in that you have to replace the whole caliper and not just the pads, he also said we might as well replace the front ones as well. He then proceeded to hand me a $900 estimate (a bargain $700 something for rebuilt calipers!) just for the rear set, I think the set of four cost something like $1800. He then told me that my exhaust had some "spots" on it and he recommended putting one of those on too. After laughing myself to the point of passing out, I called the service manager over and had him hand the tech the brake pads that I brought in !
for the car that supposedly could not be re-padded. I then went out to their shop and under much protest using their tools took the caliper off, and plopped the pads out into my hand, then put it back together (after finding the retainer spring which I dropped) and asked him to point out the spots on the muffler which turned out to be just some crud. They then said they would do the job for the advertised $49, but I had to say piss-off and ended up doing it with a friend the next weekend. Just think of all the Old Ladys out there getting screwed by these companies!! As always, Geoff, sorry for clogging up your site!

The problem of the frozen brakes, is that the cables are getting water in them and freezing. Try spraying some dry lube inside your cable housings. this should take care of your problems. Working for a Toyota dealership helps me quite abit. Plus owning a MR2 doesn't hurt either. Feel free to email me.

First let me say that this is a great site. I own a 91 MR2 and have found some good info here. I saw the posting of the wire color translation for an aftermarket alarm but how do you know if your car is prewired for an alarm? Where is the harness located if it is prewired?

If anyone out there has problems with the frozen E-brake and the lube alone wont help, try drilling or cutting a hole in the parking brake cable at the lowest point that it hangs down and then spray dry lube into it. Without the hole, the water just collects and freezes under the dry lube (when it gets really saturated, not always). BE CAREFUL THOUGH, shredding the actual cable would really suck.

San Jose CA,
1st Sports car was '77 Triumph Spitfire, good looking & way fun but it broke down a lot. 2nd car was 85 MR2 red and I was in love. I ended up sliding it sideways off a small sand coated bridge w/o a railing (upside down in creek, but not injured) and needing a new car. 3rd car was '79 Triumph TR6 (I know some people never learn), this was actually a very nice car. It had a long list of things that needed to be fixed but the car ran & looked great. I commuted with this car for several years. Then I test drove a '91 MR2 Turbo and have been hyperventilating ever since. BTW I sold the TR6 for the same $6K as I bought it for, it made a great down payment on the MR2.
Very good site, I have found procedures to fix a couple of nagging problems. Thanks a bunch.

I have an 86 MR-2. I love it. Does anyone out there know if the butterfly for the TVIS is located at the top or the bottom of the intake manifold. I am thinking of removing it. You all must read the recent issue of Sport Compact Car. They are building up a MkII, similar to what i am doing, you can learn alot about the MR2 in the article. As for the guy with overheating, i assume youv'e kept the water/antifreeze volume at the right level. The thermostat is located on the INLET side of the water pump, the pump is located on the belt assembly,(the passenger side), near the bottom, easier to get to from underneath the car probably. Anyone know how much a TRD clutch costs? Must replace my slipping one. Visit my sight, sorry, no mr-2 stuff yet. http://members.aol.com/SportRidr/intro.html

Proud owner of a teal-blue 91 MR-2 Turbo with only 17K (you guys don't
even want to know how much I paid for my baby:)
For those looking, dial up this address www.bostontoyota.com They have a 93MR-2 Blue w/ leather (loaded) with only 35k miles that I KNOW has been in their inventory since the middle of summer. Initially they were asking $14,995 for it.
Now, it's listing for $11,995. Hey, it's winter in the NE; the car isn't selling so they might be dealing. Good luck and please drop me a line about any that happened!!

Michelle & Bryon (tty090.softdisk.com)
We purchased my dream car in 1992. A crimson red 1992 TuRbO. We have had such great times with this car. Tops off, on the car of course, cruising the roads for no reason but to drive( and find curvy roads) We just had our first child in May, and Bryon wants to sell the car and get something more practical. And since I drive it daily, all I do to change his mind is to let him drive it for a week. I usually get it back cleaned and polished. The "car"isma returns. One day I'll have to write about the Pocono Raceway MR2 meet. Not too many people can say that they rode in a Supra TuRbO with Juan Fangio.

I have a Sea Green 93 MR2, I live in South Florida, I would like to modify my car but discreatly. I want my car to look stock but be able to take almost anything out there. I have seen a catalog of Engines at a mechanics in SoFL and there were listed 4 engines for the MR2 ranging in price from like $4200 to $5700 they were the MR2 Class I,II,III, and IV. I being the 135 horsepower engine and the IV being a 200-210 (can't remember) horse power engine I would like to make serveral modifications to my car price not al imit though I don't know too much about cars. if someone could e-mail recommendations I would appreciate it. I would like to put the Class IV in my car (if possible, and if I have enough room) a Turbo Charger, Exhuast etc... would like to know any comments you may have (tommorrow I'm going to get the name of the place that sells this engine and post it...)

To the guy wondering about the MK1 engines for sale that make 210 HP: One company that makes them is PAECO engine company in Birmingham AL (205-823-7278). BUT, that is a racing engine (Stage 4: actually 249 HP, no turbo, no blower) that requires MUCH upkeep and would not at all be reliable. All MK1 owners should contact PAECO to check on thier less potent engines, stage 2 for example makes 178 HP without any compressor and is suitable for the street (all for the bargain basement price of $4700, built). They also make aluminum flywheels, pullys, rods, cams ect...for all MR2's (including machine work)

About 2 month ago, i read an article on this web site about MR2 suspension. This person was testing 91 and 93 mr2 turbo. Amazingly, he said that 91 suspension was better!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO i own 92 mr2 turbo and i will do anything to get 93 suspension. It handles much much better. 91 mr2 suspension is aweful....(i race at ciruit) it understeers at the corner, then all of a sudden it oversteers. And when it looses control, it's so hard to control it. But when i tried 93 mr2 turbo, it's different. I can managed to control this car with much ease. I do not understand why this person likes 91 mr2 rather than 93 mr2.
Also there was a guy who wrote that his integra gsr is lot better than mr2, and he said he will out handle mr2 anytime..... WHATEVER!!!!!!! Before i bought mr2, i used to drive honda. They are good car and handle pretty well, but i do not believe integra GSR can out handle mr2(unless its type R integra which has good chasis and good suspension) He also said that mr2 understeer like crazy!!!! NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! It only understeer in the beginning of the turn then it just oversteers!!!! It probably understeer for him because he did not know how to drive MR2!!!!!!!! Well this is a great page and i hope i will see more info about MR2!!!!!! PLEASE put more things about suspension!!!!!

In answer to David Morrison's question ,the thermostat is located in a seperate housing on top of the gearbox at the rear of the block. It can be identfied by the large coolant hoses feeding in and out .MR2 cooling systems are excellent even in our hot Australian summers (which it is right now).Problems usually relate to poor bleeding when refilling or head gasket failure due to corrosion (lack of regular coolant
changes or cheap antifreeze).I hope this helps,Merry Christmas ,I think it's time to take my MR2 to the beach.........

Greetings everyone. It's been awhile since I've visited the Guestbook and the comments/stories are great. I just have a couple of Commandments and questions for everyone/anyone interested. If you drive a MR2 or P.O.S (get it?) NEVER,EVER GO TO MIDAS, AAMCO, or ANY quick lube joint! You are only asking for trouble and might as well thank them for screwing you and your beautiful car over.
Commandment #2: Remember this, changing your own oil and filter (on a 91-95 MR2)comes second in line to tying your shoes as far as difficulty is concerned. That goes for the air filter too. Which brings me to my questions. Has anyone installed a high performance air intake filter (i.e., K&N, Superflow, etc.) on a 2.2 non-turbo? If so, have you noticed any true performance increase? Last question is can someone tell me how to remove the driver's side panel so as I can see what type of amplifier is located there. For those unaware, I am under the impression that Toyota installed a stock amp there.
Thanks again and I would appreciate your response. Oh one more thing, what do you think about the MRS (1999 MR2 replacement)?

Seasons Greetings everyone!
I am wondering if someone out there has ever swapped the front bumper cover from an 87-89 MR2 and put it on a 85-86. If so, did it fit, or did you have to replace any of the bumper assembly under the cover? If I simply take my 85 bumper cover off, will an 87-89 bumper cover alone fit in its place, or will the re-bar and the impact absorber have to be changed as well?
Furthermore, how do you take the cover off? how many bolts are there?
Thanks. any advice would be greatly appreciated
Merry Christmas All

I'am the proud owner of swiss 1991 2.0 liter red MR2 and i would like to thank all the members who provided information on that wounderfull car. Strange enough, on mine the right speaker went of (short circuit in the radio, I suppose) and not the left like it is written in the FAQ. Previously I owned a supra turbo, much more powerful but surely less fun.
It seems that the swiss club has no longer access to the internet.
I wonder if a member has the same problem as i have : where are you supposed to put the skis during winter ? This was just a joke, I know now that this toy is not designed to be used in ski resorts.
It was also a way of sending to all the Mr2 fans a "swisslike" hello for xmas and a happy new year.

This was my first vist to the site. I did not know places like this were out there. Anyway, I have a question. I have a 91 MR2 which occasionally back fires in the morning. Apart from waking up the neibours I am sure it cann't be good. Has anyone else experienced this and or found a cause?

Got an '85 MR2 about a week ago... love it, but 3 issues:
1.) Makes a squealing noise when I take off... thought it was a belt, but could it be a clutch problem? Anyone run into this?
2.) Idles great when it's cold, the hotter it is, the rougher it idles...
3.) On a cold day, starter whizzes before kicking in (uh oh!)... Anyone ever change the starter on a Mk1?
The car has lots of mileage (224000 km) but it's a blast... won't trade it for anything! Body still mint, too!
Thanks for the great site - JW

Hi! Its great to finally get to this site and find so many good things about the MR2. I'm really attached to mine. I own a '85 Yellow MR2 (AW11) direct from Japan. Right now, I need to know where I can get a hold of a list of how many MR2s there are in Singapore of the 85 model and a list of how many there are still existing in the world. I need to convince a judge that the workshop I sent my car to for fixing took 52 days because there were no spare parts readily available unless of course I asked the sole agent here to ship them out - which would have taken 4 weeks by air or 3 months by sea. Can anyone help ? Thanks in advance, Joan

I bought a 93 MR2 in June with 50,000 miles -- not a turbo. I've been having a blast. My wife was against it (too impractical). So far, we've run into few problems on that front, though. When you also have a minivan, who cares about a little impracticality? It makes my commute a lot more fun. Best car I've ever owned.

I just purchased a 1991 Non-turbo, black with T tops. It's a great car. It was originally sold as a California car - anyone have any suggestions on the practicality of decaliforniaizing the car? Every MR2 I've seen in Texas has a deteriorated ash tray lid - any suggestions for a replacement (no smoking allowed in car, but missing cover is unsightly)? Is the electric antenae mast replaceable? Has anyone found an answer to determining if the car is factory prewired for an alarm?

'91 MR2 Turbo, red t-tops. Lovin' my ride and the mild winters here in Augusta, GA! Without a doubt the best car I've ever driven. I'm just itchin' to upgrade my baby....Any word on performance effects of wider tires on the '91? I'd love to slap some 15" rims all around and 225's on the back end. And what's up with the lack of clear coat paint? The blistering sun has taken it's toll.... any ideas to help this situation? Thanks y'all, COOL SITE!!!!

Do all MK2 MR2's burn up their ignition componets quickly, or is it just the turbo models? Has anyone tried changing to a distributorless ignition on an MR2 turbo? I replaced the cap and rotor button this weekend and i'm going to replace the plugs and wires next weekend in an effort to clear up a miss that occurs when the turbo spools up.I had the same problem less than a year ago that turned out to be bad wires.Does anyone have a suggestion as to what kind of plugwire to use? 2 sets of Toyota wires in 10 months is a little rediculous.
