A Turbo MR2 in Europe
As you probably know, Turbo MR2's are not available in Europe, and I have yet
to see another Turbo on the road. I got mine grey-market from the U.S. using my
special status as a "fonctionnaire international" here. That means what I
drive does not have to satisfy local homologation(i.e. safety) standards.
Having the car here is a blast since the speed limits are either non-existent,
or, at the very least, higher(130km/h) and not strictly enforced. Hundred mile
per hour cruising is common on the "autoroutes" and I do it all the time.
Mountain driving in the Alps is also terrific. Fuel, warranty, parts, labour,
add-ons, and tires are another story, however. Fortunately, the 3SGTE engine is
sold here in the Celica All-Trac. I have yet to drive a Euro MR2 to compare. I
should mention that the 1994 MR2 sold in Switzerland is 175hp, so the
difference with the Turbo shouldn't be that large.
Switzerland
The MR2 is rather popular in Switzerland, and one sees them on the road at
least as much as in the U.S. The cost for a new MR2 is about SFr 50k
tax-included - about $40k U.S., with only leather and air-conditioning as
options. You get ABS, T-bar, stereo cassette and driver airbag standard.
France
The car is quite rare in France, so driving through French villages can draw
a lot of attention. The cost for a new MR2 is about FF 50k tax-included -
againn about $40k U.S., with no options. You get ABS, AC, T-bar, stereo
cassette, anti-theft and driver airbag standard.
Future Modifications
For the moment I am thinking of new wheels and tires, perhaps going to 16" on
the rear. Anyone tried TSW wheels?
