There are some MR2 NA's that do very well locally, but the Miatas seem to be dominating CS at the national level lately. Brad

Subject: SCCA MR2 Results

I just received the lastest copy of SportsCar, the SCCA's official
magazine, and thought that other MR2 owners would like to hear some
of the roadracing and Auto-x results with MR2's.
I don't know if this info. is out on the Net anywhere, so I apologize
if y'all have already seen this. I was putting together something similar
for a friend and thought "What the heck, other MR2 owners might be
interested".
***Disclaimer***
I am only quoting the results from races in the magazine that include
MR2s. Since they only post the top few positions I can not tell, in all
cases, how big the feild was and what the other cars were in the feild.
By the way if any of the people listed below are on the list,
congratulations! You make us very proud. Keep winning!
ROAD RACING
-----------
(SCCA class SSB permits NA MR2s. There is no SCCA class for Trubos, as
far as I can tell)
Some other cars in SSB: Miata, Neon, Sentra, VW GTI,
***Lime Rock, July 1
10 starters: 1 (Mazda Miata), 2 Bill Fenton (Toyota MR2),
3 Jim Ocuto (Toyota MR2), 4 Neon, 5 Neon, 6 Neon
***Laguna Secca, Monterey, CA, July 8
9 starters: 1 Sentra, 2 GTI, 3 Lynne Griffiths (MR2), 4 GTI, 5 Neon,
6 Neon
***Watkin Glen, July 16
15 Starters: 1 Bill Fenton (MR2), 2 Miata, 3 Miata, 4 Jim Ocuto (MR2),
5 Nissan, 6 Miata
Contratulations Bill! There is a great picture of his MR2 in front of
the Miata going through what looks like the chycanne (sp?) at the end
of the long straight. It looks like Bill's MkII front inside wheel is
almost off the ground!
SOLO
----
In SCCA's solo racing the MkII NA's are in C Stock and the MKII Turbo's
are in A Stock. (I don't know about MKI's, sorry).
***Boston, Mass, Jun 24-25
AS ? entries: 1 Matt Murray (MR2T), 2 Proche 911, 3 BMW M3
CS 21 entries: 1 Rich Fletcher (MR2), 2 Miata, 3 Vince Bly (MR2),

There's a good picture of Rich's MKII, with T-tops out, really getting
on it out of a tight corner. Again, you can almost see air under
the front inside tire.

From: David Scott (davescot@ozemail.com.au) Date: Wed, 1 May 1996 23:37:51 +1000 (EST) Subject: MR2 race info Hi Geoff, great site. Thought you might be interested in some old race result info from Australia. In 1991, a 12 hour race for standard production cars was run at Mount Panorama in Bathurst, New South Wales over the Easter weekend. (Mt. Panorama is arguably the greatest road course in the world today - see it's Web page at http://www.csu.edu.au/communit/2BS/mtpan.htm). Toyota Australia's engineering department entered an MR2 in Class S (normally aspirated sports cars) funded by "what was left in petty cash". They won the class. In 1992, they decided to do it again. They were again funded from engineering's "petty cash tin". They again won Class S. In 1993, again they ran. Again they won their class. In 1994, same as before. But, in addition to their unbeaten class record, their outright placings continued to improve, culminating in 4th outright in 1994 (behind two works' Mazda RX7 twin turbo's and a factory Porsche 968 ClubSport, and in front of cars like BMW and Maserati). Over the time the cars were driven by twins Neal and Rick Bates (Neal is also reigning, and now 3-time, Australian Rally Champion in a GT-Four), and for the last two years, by Juan Manuel Fangio II. The car's great strength was it's un-stressed reliability. They'd run it flat-out for 12 hours and it would simply never miss a beat. The RX7's on the other hand, became notorious for winning, and for eating their brakes. A tank of gas would last them about 1 hour at Bathurst ... the special racing brake pads allowed under the rules (with standard disc rotors, calipers etc) would last about 55 minutes. At the hourly pit stop, the Mazda's would refuel, and change pads, and disc rotors, and throw them away. One RX7, 12 hours, 12 full sets of pads, 12 full sets of disc rotors. The MR2? Didn't even have to change pads. In 1994, their best outright placing, they estimated that the rear pads would have worn out at about hour 15, and the front at about hour 18. The event would have to go to a 24 hour race before they would even have to worry about how to do a quick pad change. Unfortunately, the race organiser decided to relocate the race to Eastern Creek Raceway (a conventional circuit in suburban Sydney, created to host the Australian round of the 500cc Motorcycle World Championship) and Toyota lost interest in the event. All that remains now, is the current MR2 is sold in two models in Australia. The "GT" full of all the extras, and the "Bathurst" without power steering, leather seats, rear console compartment, radio etc. to make it lighter and faster. A good record for a great car.

Subject: MR2 for GT?
The Following is an article which appeared in this week's Autosport
(UK), titled "TOM'S looks at MR2 for GT series":-
"Anglo-Japanese firm TOM'S GB could be building a Toyota MR2 for
use in next season's Global Endurance GT series, in either the GT1 or
GT2 divisions.
"TOM'S marketing manager Nick Coleman will be at this weekend's
Brands Hatch round of the series, on a fact finding mission.
" 'This will be a private effort, not a Toyota one,' said TOM'S
GB supremo Hiroshi Fushida. 'We have potential customers, and would like
to build a reasonably competitive GT car.'
"An MR2 already races in the All-Japan series in the GT2
equivalent class."
Just thought you might be interested.
