Updating a 91 to 93 Specification Shifter
Acknowledgments
Thanks go to Kostas for the original
parts list and the idea for this upgrade.
Part Numbers
All the following parts were obtained through a local Toyota dealer. I took
Kostas' original parts list to the dealer who looked them up and found a
couple of different part numbers (See second list).

58808-17030-CO Cover sub assy. shifting hole
My Parts Listing
33504-17071-CO Knob, sub assy. black
33506-17060 Retainer sub assy. control shift lever

Only the Knob and the shift-hole Cover had different numbers and the Bushing

Assembly
See page MT-116 of the '91 Repair manual for the diagram of how to disassemble
the current shifter. You might want to also ask your Toyota dealer to view the
microfiche on the '93 model's shifter so that you can see the location of the
Shim that is the only "added" part in the upgrade. This Shim is sandwhiched
between the Shifter retaining assembly (big metal plate) and the "holder" cup
which the bottom of the shifter rides in.

Subject: 91->93 Shifter Upgrade

Geoff and Kostas,
I did the shifter upgrade in my '91T yesterday. I think I was
previously correct that the new retainer plate has not changed. In
fact, I used the old one so that I wouldn't have to remove and reinstall
the rubber mounting cushions. The new bellcrank support also appeared
to be identical to the old one. So, I think the only parts you need for
the upgrade are the shift lever and the shim that goes between the
plastic cup and retainer plate. This would make the cost of this
upgrade less than $20 plus the cost of a new shift knob.
The extra part that shows up in the drawing in my '94T shop manual is a
wave washer. It fits on the bellcrank support shaft and looks like it
just keeps everything tight so that the torsion spring and bellcrank
don't rattle on the shaft. (I would guess that the new shim on top of
the plastic cup was also added to keep things from rattling or getting
sloppy.) The part number for the wave washer is 90206-12003, and it
cost me $1.55.
I also noticed that the new shift lever doesn't appear to change the
geometry of the linkage -- it just simply shortens the shaft, so you
could accomplish the same thing just by shortening the stock shaft. If
you use an aftermarket set-screw mount shift knob (like Momo), you could
just cut off the shifter threads and install the new knob and have a
short throw shifter for the price of a new knob.
The ring on the new shift lever which supports the shift boot was in the
way of mounting my Momo short anatomic knob the way I wanted to, but
fortunately this ring is just pressed on so I could knock it off with a
hammer. For a thread-on type knob, just leave the ring in place and the
'91 boot should work fine.
