Parts Purchased:
Royal Purple 75W90 that has just come on the market
appears to be so far, one of the best I have used.
Note: many are using different types of transmission fluid
It is really a kind of try it and see if you like it
thing. Since the transmission oil is so easy to change out
if you try one, and don't like it, then try something else
you may like it better.
two aluminum crush washers one for each plug
crush washer part # 90430-18008 $1.24/ea you need two
NOTE: DO NOT use the old crush washers.
Procedures: I did not have to jack the car up to do this, but
others may find it easier.
There are three plugs, we only need to use two of them.
If you slide just under the car on the front side of the
tire, look up at the transmission, and you should see two
24mm plugs, one down towards the lower side of the transmission
on its front forward face, and one up above it.
Use the lower one to drain the oil. But there is also a third
plug that is on top of the transmission.
To see this plug you will need to be leaning over the drivers
(US), side of the engine bay, and look down just over to the
right side of the starter. You should see a somewhat larger
breather plug and just to the right of it, the top fill plug.
The breather plug has a loose turn ring on the top and should
NOT be removed for this operation.
NOTE: in using this top detent bolt plug,
DO NOT MESS WITH THE SHIFTER WHILE THIS
PLUG IS OUT.
Just to the right of the breather is the top fill plug.
It is a straight shot down to it and makes filling the
transmission much easier.
After you have found both plugs, now comes the fun part.
Assemble your 1/2 drive breaker bar, and your long
extension, and the 24mm socket. Position the
socket on the TOP plug, (not the lower one), and push with
all your might, and break it loose.
Usually you will only have this problem if this is the
first time that you have removed this plug.
After you have broken loose the TOP plug, then position your
oil drain pan under the lower plug and proceed to break it
loose.
Make sure you remove the old aluminum crush washer, and
cleanup and wipe off the plug and set it asside for now.
I find it easy to remove the old aluminum crush washer by
cutting it with a small pair of wire cutters.
Now you are ready to break loose the BOTTOM plug assemble
your breaker bar, and 24mm socket, and if you need a small
extension and break loose the bottom plug. But ONLY break
it loose, do not start unscrewing it just yet.
Position your oil drain pan over far enough
so that when the initial rush of oil comes out of the hole
that it doesn't overshoot the drain pan, as I did, and get
oil all over your garage floor. Now unscrew the plug and
let all of the oil drain out. I let mine run until it
stopped running completely. Clean up the TOP fill plug
and make sure you remove the old crush washer, then put
one of the new aluminum crush washers on and set the plug
asside.
Now you are ready to put the BOTTOM plug back on with one
of the new aluminum crush washers. Position the crush
washer on the plug, and then screw the plug back into the
BOTTOM plug hole. Now find your torque wrench and set it
to 36 ft lbs
Now torque the plug back in place.
Now you are ready to fill the transmission back up with oil.
Find your funnel with the long extension on it, and leaning
over the car looking down into the engine compartment,
lower the end of the funnel down. If your funnel is large
enough it should rest on something and not fall all the
way through the engine compartment.
Now you are ready to start pouring all 4 quarts, and it does
take all four, into the transmission.
Now once you have finished filling and hand screwing the
fill plug back on, you are ready to torque the top fill plug
in place. Assemble your torque wrench and your 24mm socket
and an extension and torque the top fill
plug down to 36 ft. lbs.
Now do your basic cleanup, and your done.
