Subject: Vehicle ID code

A week or so ago, someone posted a message talking about their vehicle ID
code numbers. Also that person wondered what exactly each digit mean.
I've found an explaination for each digit in a service manual for my
previous car.

ok, here's an example of a ID code:

   4 P 3 B S 3 4 R 1 N E 0 0 0 0 0 1

1st digit: country, 4 = USA
2nd digit: Make, P = plymouth
3rd digit: Vehicle type, 3 = passenger car
4th digit: Others, B = manual seat belt, C = auto seat belt
5th digit: Line, S = Laser or Talon FWD
6th digit: Price class, 3 = Medium, 4 = High, 5 = Premium, 6 = Special
7th digit: Body, 4 = three door hatch back, etc
8th digit: Engine, T = 1.8L, R = 2.0L, U = 2.0L turbo
9th digit: Check digits, this is a single number or letter x used to verify
the accuracy of transcription of vehicle ID number
10th digit: model year, N = 1992
11th digit: Plant, E = DSM
12th-17th digit: Serial number

What each digit represents is universal, the example I gave after the
definition of the digit is variable.
