Why on Earth would you use an HKS VPC and a Motec ECU? That stupid VPC is like tinker toys compared with the Motec, which is a very professional EMS that's preferred by quite a few bona fide racers.
The E-Manage will control your injectors if the stock ECU can. The real question isn't if, but how well.
You will make nice numbers, despite that stupid AFM being in place. The real issues are drivability and lag, along with mileage.
The stock ECU has tons of threasholds programmed into it that allow the MR2 to be well-driven. When you screw with these signals, you pass these threasholds at different times then what's advantageous. You can only tune so much of this out.
Don't EVER go with a piggyback that's pure alpha-N control on a turbo! I can't stress this enough! I believe the original e-manage did this.
An EMS will prevent you from suffering from any drivability issues, minimal lag and great mileage if well-tuned. That said, I rarely see well-tuned EMSes, even from big names like Justin Ninni. That's, of course, my opinion.
If you want to put up with carbureted-engine-like mileage and drivability, then mazel tov. If you want something that will not only give you great power, but great manners, get an EMS.
This is all, of course, my opinion.
