I'm lucky. Where I live its easy to tell the people who like the fart cannons and cheezy aluminum wings because they all drive civics, integras, neons, etc. Anyone who drives a real sports car (MR2, 300ZX, RX7, etc.) has enough taste to actually make there cars look better with their choice of mods, or just leave them stock.
Bodykits and such are still bought for the good cars but the exhausts are deep but not too loud and the wings look like they were designed for the car not just screwed into the trunk.
More on topic, if you can't afford it, don't buy it. If you can afford it but plan on selling the car when you finish school, don't throw your money away because at the very best you'll get 20% of what you put into it back. If on the other hand you do have extra money to spend on luxary items like car parts and your into cars and would rather spend money on your ride than any other luxary items and the MR2 is THE car for you then buy it.
Personally, I meet all 3 of those requirements and couldn't be happier with the money I plan on wasting on my car. Owning a bad ass car is a lot of fun (and worth it in my opinion) but you'll always have to spend money on parts, owning a second car for practical uses, storing it in the winter (in cold climates like me). Everyone is different so I suggest that you do whatever will make you the most happy.
