the differences are obvious if you look inside the distributor.

To my knowledge, the largeport 4A-GE has four "pins" on the camshaft position sensor, while the 4A-GZE and smallport 4A-GE use a thirty-six pin (IIRC) camshaft position sensor. The camshaft psoition sensor is a hall-effect magnetic pick-up system built in to the distributor. There is also a second sensor in the dizzy with one pin, to simply count engine revs, in both versions.

edit: I also believe the plugs are different, where the "four pin" version has a circular socket and the "thrity-six pin" version uses a square socket.
