I sure like my 86, fun to drive and very economical. My brother rebuilt the engine in it about 4 years ago. For the expense it took, I think I would investigate a JDM swap if faced with a rebuild. With the sad C52 transmissions in the early Mk1s, I would think an JDM engine/tranny combo would be the way to go.
If you contact toyoandrew (Houston, TX) on this board, perhaps he could share some details of his rebuild of both engine and transmission vs JDM purchase. He expressed no desire to chance a JDM engine.
