Hi. I just got my 85 MR2 2 weeks ago and plan on keeping it (I own 4 other cars) but as far as your problem--it could be expensive. A blown head gasket is better than a cracked head but either way the head has to come out to get resurfaced. You might also need valves adjusted and other work depending on how long the engine was operated after the gasket went (if that is indeed the problem). If it's just resurfacing the head and replacing the head gasket, parts should not be very expensive. Most of the cost is labor--I'm not familiar enough yet to know how hard it is to remove the head but $1300 might be a bit high. Best of luck, hope you are able to get your car back on the road soon.
