I'm not sure if you can do it without taking the head off. with the head off it isn't too hard, provided you have a valve spring compressor to reinstall the valves. some parts stores allow you to rent/borrow tools, so you might be able to find a spring compressor.
I have a suspicion that there is a way to do it without removing the head, but I have no idea how.
