22R In a MK1 ?

I bumped into a guy driving a red mk1 while driving down the road the other day and as usual I honk and wave as I pass by him, turns out he was going the same direction as I was so we played a little cat and mouse on the freeway until we came to a traffic light. He pulls up next to me and we start BS'ing about deuces and he says he just bought the one he was driving and it's and NA, He tells me about his previous 86 which had a 22R engine in it, I kinda went WTF? 22R in a mk1 why? Needles to say I ask him if he's a board member and he says "oh there is a site for these" I told him yeah and he definately had to check it out so I gav e him the web adress. So would there be any advantages of having a 22R in a MK1? To me it seems like the 22R would be inferior to the 4AGE and the only real reason to run a 22R would be simplicity.I'm aware that 22R's can be bad ass little motors however arent they carbourated? Interesting to me.
