You need to have a diagnostic machine to connect your ECU to, or you can bring it to a parts store. I believe Checkers does it for no charge.

you can turn the idle doown if you want to. hi idle can be from many things being wrong. the gage will move when you turn on any thing in a MR2 they have the best amp gages of any cars i think. so thats working right. the smoke . that can from literly any thing on the motor. or in the motor. the cheek eng light can be rest N/p just have some one read the code first. i would start looking for a new motor befor you end up with to much of your time working out the lilttle problims just to find out you need piston rings.

This would be if it were an obd2 car. In your case, all you need to do is bridge T (or Te1) and E1 on your diagnostic connector. This will set the check engine light to blink out your codes.

If you don't have a diagnostic connector, you can ground pin Te1 on the ecu.

Do you have any pics of this car?

i really dont think its the rings, it got tons of power. when i give it a rev it revs smooth, i just cant seem to figure out y its running so rich.

Black smoke means it has to be running rich. The diagnotic port is right next to the AFM do what mr220v said and check to see what code its giving it's probably an O2 sensor. Do a full tune up plugs, cap, rotor and wires. You might want to change your fuel filter if it hasn't been changed. After all that adjust your idle.

black smoke is never a good thing. i dont know how much black smoke your seeing. did the car sit for a long time befor you got it ? it could just be burning out carbon build up. and most MR2 have great power befor they blow up

Check the simple and cheaper stuff first before you start shopping for a new motor.

I'm going to make a guess and say that when you pull codes, you'll get a code for afm (or map if you're on BT electronics), or for knock sensor. Possibly water temp or iac, but you're not saying you have the normal symptoms of a problem here.

O2 won't cause a CEL.

Also, is the starter slow to turn over?

I don't know what it is on the 16v ecu, but with newer ecu's, including the 20v, it's code 21.

From the photos you sent me, I noticed that your IAC valve is unplugged. There's the reason for your CEL right there.

i pluged in the AIC and it ran alittle better, but still not how it should. are there any place/people in the central florida area that maybe i could take it to? i kinda feel in over my head with this car.

Reset your ECU and see what codes you pull up. I don't know how to do this on a Toyota but i'm sure someone will post really fast on how to do it. Usually involves unplugging the battery for 20-30 minutes and then plugging it in and letting the car idle for a long time. Or maybe you are supposed to drive the out of it. I don't exactly know...

I do know. if you just plugged in a sensor that has been disconnected, then your ECU has mapped your A/F with a bad setting, and need to be remapped, IE Reset your ECU.

In my experiance just unplug your battery and put your foot on the brake.
those codes are 21 24 25 33 41.
as MR220V said 21 is your O2 but your car wont run bad from that. i didnt have an O2 and mine ran fine.

but not having an 02 usually makes your car run way too rich. I would still reset your ECU and see if some of those codes clear. I had a crx with a bswap that was running really bad and throwing codes. I reset the ecu and It dropped 4 of those codes and started running a whole lot better.
