thank you for all your help in this thread. i see a picture of a kid in a dryer (or whatever it is) and i know its good information. i also plan to clean out the idle control valve, or whatever toyota calls it.

before i go to germany, all i want is for it to idle smooth, hold oil pressure and not over heat. as long as those three things are done..im happy. it can turn, stop and go fast later.

so after teardown and reassembly, it still does the idle fall off. i cleaned the maf and ISV. I will double check the airbox bolts. could it be o2 sensor related? what about the ISV just failing? any ideas would be great as my DD honda died on the way to work today =\

So overheating and rough idle? If there was coolant in the exhaust, I'd say a BHG is a lock.

oh, doesn't overheat. i replaced the HG during the teardown. It isnt a rough idle, so much as a wont idle. at start up, the rpm goes to 1100 or so, holds for a second, then dies. very controlled, very consistant. if i keep a foot on the throttle, however, it stays alive just fine.

would the lack of air filter do this? its just open air to the maf right now, so would the lack of any intake restriction cause an issue for the vacuum in the airbox to keep the maf door cracked open?

You have some kind of leak in your airbox between the afm and the throttles which is not allowing the afm to open fully. That's what this almost always is.

If you were to jam the afm gate open, the motor would run and idle just fine.

So, check your hoses (both for the intake and the idle control), and all the fastening bolts on the box.

I've had this many many times, and it always turns out to be the same thing.

well, with the AFM propped open, the car does idle fine. i took off and double checked the airbox and applied more liquid sealant, just to make sure it was sound. after reinstalling the box, the car persists in not idling for me.

when you say 'check the (intake) hose', what do you mean? I have the hose going from the ISV to the motor side of nipple of the airbox, but I'm not sure what to attach to the trunk side of the airbox's nipple. It is currently capped. Thought about running a hose from the crankcase nipple to the airbox, but they are different sizes.

On a lightner note, got all the suspension back together..it looks great and those bushings were a piece of cake to 'press' in (didn't require much more than bare hands..the little table vice i have helped, though.)
