Troubleshooting... first startup
Just finishing up the BT 20v swap, and I'm working on troubleshooting the last few details. It's cranking but not starting right now.
I checked for spark- it has spark. I sprayed some starting fluid in to make sure it's not a fuel issue- still nothing. Compression is good. Every once in a while, it sputters a bit and stalls out. Any thoughts on what to check next? |

hmm, I had the distributor off... I wonder if it can be installed backwards.

I thought they were keyed one way though. They might not maybe my memory is wavering. They do have some adjustment though
I had this trouble on one engine and it was plugs. No idea why it was just a cold day and the slightly gunked plugs wouldn't let it start. Was annoying because it then started no problem after cleaning them and ran on those plugs trouble free for 2 years I also once didn't plug in a map sensor and it did this.....yea whoops needed that![]() |

If I don't hear from someone by tomorrow who knows for sure, I'll pull off the distributor and see if it's installed backward. As for the adjustment- it had a ridge where the bolt was before, so I just set the timing exactly as it had been.

Okay, inspiration struck, so I went outside and confirmed that the distributor is indeed keyed, and can only be installed one way. I did, however, crank it over, and it sputtered a bit for a second before shutting off. I'm thinking it may be flooding the engine with fuel for whatever reason.
I'm using a map sensor off a 1990-93 Celica GT/GTS (5sfe). Any potential issues there? |

Thanks to some help from mr220v, I discovered there were two issues at hand- first, the injector resistor, and second, I had forgotten to install the Circuit Opening Relay, and had lost it.
So, a new relay is on the way, and in the meantime, because I hotwired the fuel pump to work, the car starts and runs! I just bought some insurance, and I'm going to get a plate for it tomorrow I think! Insurance was hilarious- Progressive wanted $198/6 months, and every other company wanted $450-600/6 months. Hopefully I'll be selling the accursed Honda Civic sedan within a week! |

Great job Raptor13x. Post some pictures of your ride/engine when you get it running the way you want.

haha... I had a lot going on over the past few months. Plus, it was a Michigan winter.. and I am sure as hell not gonna get my ass outside in -10 degree temperatures to wrench on a car.
On a separate note, I just had a shop cut out 2 inches of my shifter, and I installed a non-penis-shaped knob, so now it doesn't feel like I'm shifting a Ford F350 with a dildo mounted on top. I'll get pics after I a) get a license plate for it tomorrow, and b) give it a much-needed bath. |

No... it doesn't really make a noticeable difference from normal.

Okay, I took the car for its first real shakedown run and I've discovered a few things:
1) My exhaust is WAY too ****ing loud. 2) My aftermarket steering wheel needs a spacer for hand clearance from the turn signals. 3) The engine stumbles badly, especially at 2k-4k rpm. It's lessened somewhat if the throttle is kept near closed. Last edited by Raptor13x; 06-20-2009 at 10:48 AM. |
