20vs have no EGR...which makes smog look stupid since the engines burn cleaner and if you look at research articles on variable valve timing... the way that the low ends can be set up (this is when EGR is active) is supposed to have enough time with both valves open to get backflow/leave just enough exhaust in the cylinder taking the place of EGR

it also depends if you have any smog friends or not

Only usdm motors can. That limits you to:

-gen2 3sgte
-gen1 3sge
-all v6's
-1zzfe
-2zzge
-usdm 4agze

You will have to get any of these past the ref. Keep in mind the ref is there in a swap situation to discourage this kind of activity. From what I understand, what it takes to get a swap California legal becomes an open-ended proposition.

The 20v, gen2+ 3sge's, and gen3+ 3sgte's fail on site.

Yes, and there's that. You can also swap the 7afe, the 4afe, and the 5afe. E series motors could also work.

Basically Any toyota engine that was sold in the usa the year of your car and newer. Also the transmission and ecu have to be correct for the car as well, so for example if you swap a 2GR in with a 5 spd tranny it will not pass since that engine isnt offered with a 5spd (until the lotus evora is released).

All emissions equipment needs to be in place for the original engine as well.

The emissions equipment requirement is a bit tough to meet for the newer motors. Also, i've heard of people being held up for not using the California version of their ecu. In other words, they don't want to pass you using a federal ecu.

It's a quagmire for sure. Even when swapping for dramatically cleaner motors, you can still end up getting screwed.

Like I said, the ref is there to keep you from doing stuff like this. Not to make sure your vehicle is running right.

Been dreaming about a BT/6 speed swap every since I got the Mister running early this year. California smog laws so work against swaps that it's almost not worth thinking about. A 3-way catalytic converter should clean up any emissions, and that should be the end of it.

That being said, I have decided to go ahead with my California MR2 Blacktop swap. If I do it next summer I can drive for a whole year before it needs to be smogged. I have a friendly smog guy, and failing that, I'll just keep the 16v, swap it in for the smog test, then switch back. I'll have to make sure my wiring can be reversed.

That's my plan and I'm sticking with it

My harnesses can be easily switched back.

Switching back might be the easiest solution for driving a 20v in CA.
