You could do a 5afe and really see how far it will go.
There is also the 1azfse. Direct injection. Would be a bit of a pain to get into an mr2, but would probably be pretty cheap. Aftermarket tuning would also be tough.
20v would be hard pressed to get past 40mpg, though its not impossible. 1zz would get it for sure and on 87 octane.
