^ It appears to do as most of the roof ducts like that do- disrupting the normal airflow over the vehicle. As the MR2 travels, air is pulled from under the car through the engine bay and out the engine lid, to fill the low pressure zone behind the rear window. These scoops force air to go the opposite direction, creating turbulence and reducing proper airflow over the car. So, in effect, they do nothing worthwhile and simply impede performance.

If anyone has any info contrary to this I'd be most interested in hearing it.
