I usually take a prybar, and split the two in one place just slightly. I then move to the other side of the motor, and do the same. I go back and forth a few times, and that gets it without forcing anything.
You should not have to force anything tremendously hard. If you do, there's probably something still holding on.

i just spplit a MR2 trany and motor. and yes you have to use big Phucking hammers some times. the steel alinment pins can get stuck took 3 grown men to split the damn thing.
