My A/C belt has been disconnected since I bought the car. I think it just lost the charge and the previous owner just disconnected the belt. What exactly would I need to reconnect my system and recharge it?

I do have a copy of the BGB, and am not mechanically inclined, but when it comes to A/C systems i'm just plain retarded. I've been reading this thread for over an hour now at work and am still trying to figure out whats what. I've never had A/C in any of my cars.
