^ Not the case. Windtunnels can, of course, be used to fine-tune aerodynamics, but basic aero is easy to visualize, and many improvements can be made by someone with even rudimentary knowledge of the subject.

I'm probably unusual in this regard, but I visualize the aerodynamic profile of nearly every moving object I see, especially cars. I examine how the air flows over the car, without even really thinking about it. It's pretty easy to see what's causing lots of drag, where turbulance is forming, and the high and low pressure zones of the body.
