The car is at home in my garage now. I was going to pick it up this weekend b/c we were going to my wife’s folk’s place this past weekend. That fell through so I went to South Bend, IN last Sunday (07/13/08).
To keep cost down I decided to take the bus (instead of plane or renting a car), $130. The bus was supposed to leave Roanoke, VA at 4:30a but the driver got lost…I think we finally left at 5:30a. When we got to Wytheville, VA there weren’t any seats on the bus to Charleston, WVA so I had to stand in the aisle until we got to Beckley. At Columbus, OH I changed to a Lakefront Bus (from Greyhound). Much newer & nicer bus. Arrived in South Bend at about 9:40p. About 17 hours from the scheduled departure time and actually slightly ahead of scheduled arrival time.
I walked to the Econolodge (about 1 mile) near the airport and spent the night. $62. Cheap price but crappy accommodations. Don’t stay there.
I woke up at 5a, left at 5:30a and walked 6 miles to Jordan Automotive in Mishawaka. The car is a one owner car. Originally bought new at Jordan Automotive. Original owner traded it in on a Yaris. Got there at about 7:40ish. Was able to get into the showroom at about 8a where they had the car. Was able to check it out until about 8:30a when my salesman showed up.
After a test drive and the paperwork (they already had all the money, even though they hadn’t deposited the cashiers check) it was about 10a when I hit the road heading back to VA. Filled up in Ft. Wayne ( I left the dealership with about 1/3 tank of gas). Filled up again at Charleston, WVA (320 miles, 8 gallons, 40mpg!). Didn’t use the AC. It was a beautiful day.
Finally got home to Roanoke at about 9:30p on Monday, 07/14/08. About 11.5 hours.
Discovered the original window sticker in the glove box (just over $14k). The receipt for the tires is there too, put on in 2004 at 36k miles so they have about 6k miles, the rubber tits are still on the tires. The original bill of sale was in the car too. Previous owner traded a ’77 Monte Carlo in on the MR2.
Everything works (pwr windows & locks, cruise, etc). I did notice a broken black switch in the driver’s side door jamb (just above the catch/latch) last night but haven’t figured out what it does. The passenger side one doesn’t seem to do anything? The original floor mats are a bit worn. I haven’t been under the car yet but there doesn’t appear to be any rust on the body.
Cost about $270 to get it home (including meals). About 600 miles each way.
