no problem, you can use a couple of standalone... the easiest will probably be the megasquirt, not that hard to tune, not very expensive to buy... you can run a map sensor (cause AFM with turbo will be ....)
the question is YES VVTi works with the megasquirt the only thing... it's not longer a VVTI but only VVT since there is no longer the ''intelligence'' part... you choose the RPM you want it to kick and you put it in your megasquirt program
a friend of mine over here run a special setup in his mk1... a GZE shortblock, 4age 20V head, custom intake, t28 turbo, custom exhaust manifold, custom IC and couple more stuff, he runs a megaquirt, no problem at all, he is in front of a 3rd gen 3sgte and way lighter... not even need to retuned the car for the last year everything works perfectly (and there is a LOT of custom parts)
a megasquirt cost aroung 4-700$ depends where you get it and your ability to deal if you buy it used
