It can be numerous things, start by bleeding the whole system and seeing what happens. If you saw a big leak from " where the middle of the engine is" thats something that needs to be fixed. Where did it leak from? Did you repair it? Did you refill the system? Did you fill it with the proper mix of water/antifreeze? Things we need to know. The stock gauge is hardly accurate, it wont move unless youre really overheating, so be careful not to keep driving it if you see any signs of an issue.
